Examinations, Grades - Transformation Rules
Courses are assessed in a variety of ways: written exams are common as well as various
assignments, case studies, presentations. For students who graduated in 2005 or after, some
courses are graded by the “pass/ Failure” grading system and others are graded by the hundredmark system. The Chinese five-level score system (优秀 excellent, 良好 good, 中 fair, 及格 pass,
不及格 failure) is no longer in force. The transformation rules are illustrated in the following chart. For
students who graduated in 2004 or before, the transformation rules are unchanged.

About Chinese language course:
SIE will provide Chinese language courses depending on the agreement between the partner
universities and SJTU. The fee of the Chinese language course also depends on the agreement.
However, exchange students should prioritize their main subject during the exchange term.
The Chinese language course offered by SIE is like any regular language course. The course follows
the university academic calendar, holds daytime classes on weekdays, and the majority of students
on the course are self-supported language students. Therefore, to avoid timetable clashes between
the main subject course and the Chinese language course, exchange students should firstly obtain
their main subject course timetable from the school (or college), and choose a Chinese language
course in SIE accordingly.

Student Visa
It is important for all exchange students to have an up to date and correct Visa in order to
successfully and safely complete their studies without major concern. The procedure for obtaining
and extending them can be complicated; therefore you must read the following information carefully
and refer any relevant questions to the School of International Education at SJTU to ensure that you
do not encounter any Visa or residence problems.
Different kinds of Chinese Visa
Exchange students to China must bring a current passport and either a study visa (“X”)(when staying
for over six months)or a visiting visa ( “F”) (when staying for less than six months) . If you enter China
with a different kind of visa, you must change it into a study visa as soon as possible.
www.sie.sjtu.edu.cn/visa
Apply for Re-entry into China visa, Change Visa and Visa Extension
Students should bring their student ID, current passport and one extra passport picture to the School
of International Education, and should fill out a visa/ residence permit form. Attach the passport
picture to the visa/permit form and have the form stamped with the School of International
Education’s seal. Bring this completed form and your passport to the Shanghai Municipal Public
Security Bureau to obtain a re-entry permit, to change your Visa and to extend the Visa.
For further information on Visas, please consult the Exchange office in the School of International
Education at SJTU (Room 109, Teaching Building No.1, Xuhui campus).
Leaving of the Country after Completion of Study Program
International students must leave the Chinese mainland before their visa expires. If for some reason
this is not possible, students must apply for permission to extend their visa from Shanghai Municipal
Public Security Bureau.
Obeying the laws of China and the University Rules
The legal rights of International students who study in China will be upheld and protected by Chinese
law. International students must also obey all Chinese laws and university rules, including the
People’s Republic of China’s Rules for the Entry and Exit of Foreigners, the Handbook for Students
in SJTU, etc.

proof of their medical insurance to the university to prove that they have the insurance that covers
accidental injury and hospitalization services during the period of their study. The proof must be in
English or Chinese.
