VDI/VDE
The Zentrifuge is an organizer of exhibitions,
cultural events and researching projects.
WG Integrated Plant Engineering / AK Durchgängige Anlagenplanung im VDI-Bezirksverein
Bayern Nordost e.V. / VDE-Bezirksverein Nordbayern e.V.
In 2008 it started its activities at the former
AEG-site in Nuremberg.
As a dynamic and authentic catalyst of transformation it works on the interface between
culture, art, science and economy.

Our experience and our technical knowledge
about science and practical applications make
us good spokespersons for engineers and
technology. In current debates, we are the ones
who give engineers a voice, share their expertise and represent their positions.
Our goal is to have a positive influence on the
development of technology, innovations and on
Germany as a technology hub. As designers of
society, we are aware of our responsibility, and
we approach future technologies with expertise and far-sightedness.

THE IDEA
We currently witness the emergence of cyberphysical systems.
The further amalgamation of the real world and
the virtual world will revolutionize our conception of production and plants – and of society
as a whole.
How will production plants look like in a distant future? How will we interact with these
machines?
02
THE PROJECT
VDI and the Zentrifuge initiated the project
“Engineering 2050” to bring worlds of engineers
and of artists together.
The goal is to combine visionary and technical
approaches equivalently.
The underlying conviction of the project is that in
the future innovation will be even more relied on
the successful integration of genuine creative
domains.
In a pioneering interdisciplinary approach engineers and artists try to give us first glimpses
of a possible future.

THE SUBSEQUENT PHASES
I
Workshop
World Creativity Café
In a first step a “World Creativity Café” was
conducted on the 26th of June 2013.
Over 30 engineers, artists, business professionals and anyone interested met in the Zentrifuge to answer questions referring to cyber-physical systems.
A documentation collected, summarized and
condensed the results of the workshop.
This documentation also represents the basis
for the subsequent phases.
II
Call for competition
First prototypes and sketches
As a second step a call for competition has been
installed. Three artists were selected and charged to develop first prototypes and sketches.
THE MOST
BEAUTIFUL THING
WE CAN
EXPERIENCE
IS THE
MYSTERIOUS.
IT IS THE SOURCE
OF ALL TRUE
ART AND SCIENCE.
Their inspiration consisted in the existing documentation and in individual briefings.
On the 15th of May 2014 the ideas will be presented to the public. The winning concept will
be chosen by a chair during June 2014.
III
Realization
Exhibition on the IPEC 2015
(Integrated Plant Engineering Conference)
Technical inspiration, feasibility aspects and a
broader social-economic context will play an
important role during the further development
and realization of the winning concept.
“Engineering 2050” finally will be exhibited as a
“vision realized” at the IPEC 2015 on the 25th of
March 2015 in Nuremberg.
