What will happen during my CT? Computerised Tomography (CT) or CAT scanning is a fast and painless diagnostic tool, which uses x-rays to take multiple slice images of areas of the body. It is often used for imaging of the brain, abdomen, spine and extremities. Often patients are given oral or intravenous contrast agents which increase the detail and clarity of the images taken. You will be asked to lie down on the CT table and one of our radiographer staff will position you to ensure the best quality pictures are possible. You are always in our radiographer’s full view and there is a microphone attached to the machine, so you are always able to communicate with them during the test. The scanner will rotate around your body to collect data. This data is then reconstructed into a cross sectional image using the computer. The table will move to take image slices. Sometimes you will be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds. Do I need an appointment? Although the CT scanning itself will not take very long, most CT appointments may require you to attend for as long as 30-45 minutes. We ask if you could please call us to make an appointment or drop past and arrange a suitable time. Who will do my CT? A qualified and specially trained radiographer will always be present during your procedure. How do I prepare for my CT? • E nsure that you have a referral from your medical doctors and bring it on the day with you. • • M ake an appointment and attend on time. • A dvise our staff of any medical conditions that are relevant at time of booking. • K eep taking your medicine unless advised otherwise. C onfirm any preparation required with staff when making your appointment. • ou will need to complete a safety Y form before any contrast is given. • ou may need to drink an oral contrast Y or be given an intravenous injection. • • You will be asked to change into a gown. • ou will be given breathing Y instructions as necessary. ou will be asked to lay on the table Y which moves through the scanner.
