PROLOGUE
The Government of India is responsible for ensuring the Defence of India. The Supreme
Command of the Armed Forces vests in the President of India. The responsibility for
Defence of the country rests with the Cabinet. This is discharged through the Ministry
of Defence, which provides the policy framework and wherewithal to the Armed Forces
to discharge their responsibilities for defence of the country.
The prime task of the Ministry of Defence is to prepare for Defence of the country by
providing required Infrastructure, adequate trained Manpower and Defence Equipment
and Platforms to the Armed Forces. During the last few months, the Ministry of
Defence and the Armed Forces have fast-tracked efforts to enhance defence
preparedness and the security of the Nation. This e-Book, the first of its kind, is being
launched to provide an easy and quick insight into the initiatives taken by the Ministry
of Defence.

Treading on new ground, Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL)
started a new Joint Venture with “Thales” of France,
named ‘BEL- Thales System’ at Bangalore for production
of new technology radars.

for the Air Force.

Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)
LCA Tejas was inducted into Air Force in the presence
of the Raksha Mantri Shri Manohar Parrikar.
The LCA programme witnessed another milestone
when Tejas trainer PV6, the two seater version of
Tejas LCA for Air Force, took its first flight. PV6 also
has the capability to deliver all ‘air-to-air’ and ‘air-toground’ weapons.

In another landmark event, LCA (Navy) Prototype 1
(NP1), the first indigenously designed and developed
combat aircraft designed to operate from the decks of
aircraft carriers, took-off majestically from a Ski-Jump
facility.

The air defence system in the IAF is in the process of
transformation to state-of-the-art Network Centric
System. All ground-based and airborne sensors are
being networked to provide a composite picture of
the entire air space. The IAF has successfully inducted
the Rohini Radars, modern generation Medium Power
Radars and Low Level Transportable Radars. Mountain
Radars are planned to boost our capability in the North
and North-eastern regions.

Cyclone Hudud
A very severe cyclonic storm ‘Hudud’ swept
through the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and
Odisha wreaking havoc. The Armed Forces moved
in swiftly to provide relief and minimize the
effects of the cyclone.
Controlling MASSIVE FOREST fire
Prime forests near Vishakapatnam were engulfed
by forest fires in November 2014. IAF deployed
Four MI-17 V5 helicopters with Bambi Buckets
to douse the fire. Each of these buckets can carry
upto 3,500 liters of water. Nearly 1,00,000 liters
of water was sprinkled to put out the fire.

War HISTORY
DOCUMENTATION OF WAR HISTORY
New initiatives are being taken in documentation
of history of war which include writing of the
history of the Indian Armed Forces, production
of documentaries on World War-I, World War-II,
1947-48 operations, Wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971
and the Kargil conflict of 1999. It is also proposed
to produce a full length feature film showcasing the
efforts and ethos of the Indian Armed Forces.

NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL
The Government has decided to build a National War
Memorial to honour Defence Forces’ personnel who
were martyred in wars after Independence in 1947. A
War Museum will also be constructed. ` 200 crore has
been allocated in the Defence Service Estimates for
the year 2014-15 for this purpose.

CANTONMENT ADMINISTRATION
Elections in Cantonment Boards
Elections in 56 Cantonment Boards were
successfully conducted on 11 January 2015 where
7.02 lakh out of 11.87 lakh electorate exercised
their franchise and elected 364 members. The last
election in these Cantonment Boards was held
between 2008 and 2010.

CLEAN INDIA
Responding to the Prime Minister’s call to the people
of India to realize Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of “Swachh
Bharat” (Clean India) by 2nd October 2019, the
Ministry of Defence has undertaken in right earnest an
intensive national cleanliness campaign. An elaborate
plan to implement “Clean India - Clean Cantonments”
programme has been prepared by the Directorate of
Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence.
