Newsletter St Luke’s DECEMBER 2015 A Fond Farewell! On Wednesday 18th November the Foundation hosted a very special “Farewell Morning Tea” for the Nightingales. The Nightingales were established in 1969 following a devastating fire in the operating theatres which left the hospital in dire straits. The Nightingales comprised the nurses and ex-trainees of St Luke’s who, over the years , raised funds to provide much needed anaesthetic equipment, lifting and transfer aides, monitoring equipment, and specialized beds and chairs. The first Patron was Lady Vincent (Nancy) Fairfax OBE AO who supported the Nightingales from July 1969 until July 2007. In her honour level 2 of St Luke’s Hospital is affectionately named the Nancy Fairfax Ward, the refurbishment of Level 2 was made possible by a very generous distribution from the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation in 2008. One of the most significant contributions the Nightingales made was the establishment of a coffee shop. Volunteers worked very hard making sandwiches, hot snacks, tea and coffee which were served in the shop and the garden where many a work dispute was Photos above from top: The Nightingales enjoying a final cuppa in the Nightingale Café Betty’s daughters Shona and Catriona in the Chapel Prof Mark Compton, CEO St Luke’s Care with former Matron Lynne Spencer (nee Allen- Brown) A wonderful time was had by all. solved and where visitors enjoyed an area to sit while waiting for patients. In honour of this achievement the current coffee shop bears the name “The Nightingale Café”. The Nightingales have been in existence for more than 46 years providing support to the nursing staff and the hospital but above all the Nightingales have been able to keep friendships going and reunite friends who have lost touch. Over the years there have been some enormous reunions when the corridors of Hemsley House were filled with noisy conversations and much laughter. But more recently the number of active members has diminished and with the passing of Mrs Betty MacLean, President and as both distance and age has caught up with the members it was felt that it was time to close this significant Chapter. It was marvellous to see the Nightingales enjoy a High Tea in the Terrace Room which was filled with chatter, camaraderie and nostalgia. Patron Janet King addressed the guests and SLC Chairman Mr Julian Beaumont OAM expressed the thanks of all at St Luke’s Care. Each guest received a pair of engraved wine glasses as a memento of the very special occasion. RECENT EVENTS DPC Drinks in the Bay! St Luke’s Garden Day Mulberry Farm, Robertson, is owned by Skye and David Leckie. This garden was also designed by Michael Bligh who focussed on integrating the surrounding landscape with the garden and so the views from both the garden and the house are a major focus of the garden. McGrath Hill Farm, also in Robertson is owned by Alex and Kerry Roxburgh. It was purchased in 1999 as an open field with just one tree. The garden design was inspired by Will Dangar and Susan Rothwell and has subsequently been modified by Peter Fudge. Toni Barrie, owner of ‘The Keep’ Burrawang Hats were the essential accessory for the St Luke’s Garden Day as this year the sun shone for our wonderful Rose Bay Committee. On Wednesday 21st October we visited four spectacular gardens in the Southern Highlands. Over 250 guests arrived at Burrawang Hall at 10.30am and were welcomed with morning tea and sweet treats. Following refreshments, guests were divided into smaller groups to visit two of the gardens before breaking for lunch, again at Burrawang Hall. Lunch was, as always, impeccable, and a huge thank you to all the members of the Rose Bay Committee and their Southern Highland helpers for preparing and serving a delightful feast. Our special thanks also to Annie Jones for organising Burrawang Hall and the amazing Southern Highland Team for their invaluable help with catering, drinks, parking and marshalling on the day. Our sincere thanks to the owners for allowing us to visit their stunning homes and gardens and to the many guests who attended on the day. Gardens included “The Keep” at Burrawang owned by Toni and Chris Barry, this garden was designed by Michael Bligh who developed the garden in keeping with its original 1870 heritage. The garden includes a rose walk, a lake walk and a monastery style vegetable garden. Close by Mulberry Cottage is owned by Jan and Alex Campbell who brought this cottage 12 years ago. They started work on the garden just two years ago and while it is still “a work in progress” it is stunning.
