“Homeless” and “Veteran” - two words that should not be in the same sentence.
Our troops are coming home. Coming home from Iraq; coming home from Afghanistan; coming home in
numbers not seen in 40 years. To what are they coming home? We like to imagine our heroes coming
home to a loving spouse, adoring children, a nice home, a job held for their return and a smooth reentry to
civilian life.
Not all are so fortunate. After multiple tours of duty, too many veterans are coming home to anxiety,
depression, PTSD, separated spouses, and emotionally detached children. Others are coming home to find
an underwater mortgage or discover their employer is out of business and they are out of a job. Many
respond with depression, withdrawal, addiction, or aggression. Out of work, lonely, emotionally, mentally
or physically disabled, a record number of our veterans feel so lost that they attempt suicide-- more than
950 attempts each month of which 22 each day ‘succeed’ according to the VA.
Three Hots and A Cot has a proven track record and is able to provide an array of services to homeless
soldiers and those most at-risk. The Fox Hole will provide job training, life skills training, traumainformed and evidence-based counseling and case management services to help stabilize the mental
health, finances, employment and housing of up to 100 homeless or at-risk veterans.
This facility once open will also have multiple use possibilities for the local community. The Fox Hole
would be available to offer GED classes, hold community meetings, available for other nonprofits to use
for meeting or fundraisers, and several other possible functions.
The Fox Hole is a 7,200 square foot building owned by Three Hots and A Cot that is in need of extensive
renovation prior to being able to provide the services that are needed by our veterans. Your funding will
help Alabama veterans stay safe, embrace their families, earn a living wage, obtain or retain housing and
re-enter civilian life. If you would like to visit Three Hots and A Cot, please contact me at (205) 3064761. Let’s give our troops the homecoming they deserve.
Sincerely,
JD Simpson
