Research Project Solar Cell Project “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” Abstract —Albert Einstein Physicist The goal of the project is to design, build and test a solar cell using common materials. A general outline is provided in this guide. It is left to the student to research what is available on the web and identify the appropriate materials to complete the project. Application Solar cells are energy sources that are a highly desirable alternative to fossil fuels. Currently they are not economically competitive with fossil fuels. But as more common and inexpensive materials become available the costs are coming down while the costs of fossil fuels continue to rise. At some time in the future solar cells will be economically viable and those who have identified the best materials to use will be positioned to cash in. . Sample Issues There are no samples required for this project. However, the student will need to provide some of the materials used in the construction of the solar cells. The exact materials will depend on the method of construction chosen. Background The internet is rife with articles describing homemade photovoltaic cells. These recipes tend to fall into two basic categories. One involves depositing materials onto a copper plate. The other involves depositing titanium dioxide and photo-trapping organic dyes onto a glass plate. It is left to you to search the internet for suitable background information and procedures. Begin by searching for homemade photovoltaic cells or homemade solar cells. Based on your research you will need to construct an introduction that explains the chemistry behind the operation of your cell, the role each of the materials you select play in the overall process, and the justification for your choice of the particular materials you decide to use. Procedure You will need to compose a procedure that addresses the following issues. A description of the fabrication procedure; A description of the tests to be performed to evaluate the energy cell; A description of all materials and equipment required; A description of the basic safety procedures that you will have to follow to complete all different experiments; A proposed timeline for the two weeks of the project Reagents & Other Materials. In addition to the normal lab items found in your locker and in the room, the materials that will be provided by the preproom are detailed in the Research Project Materials List, You are responsible for providing the chemicals required to construct your cell. Additional, non-sample materials may be requested of the preproom. Such requests must be submitted by your TA.
