PROJECT LEARNING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (PUM – LJUBLJANA) Project learning for young people (PUM) is An informal educational programme for young drop-outs aged up to 25 years. With the programme, we want to: * Motivate young people to resume their interrupted education; * Help reach a decision for education within the framework of existing possibilities and forms; Enable individual support for the compensation of insufficient knowledge. Who participates in the PUM programme? Young people aged between 15 and 25 years Are not included in the regular school system Have not acquired the fundamental basic or vocational education Are not in an employment relationship or do not have the status of an employee How is the PUM programme carried out? The programme takes place every day, from Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. It is organized in the period from 20 September till 30 June. Holiday activities are being carried out in July. Young people can enter the PUM programme throughout the entire school year. Basic features of the PUM programme: Work is based on the principles of simulation of direct life-related problems with active and equal participation of participants. Project work: mentors and participants equally solve concrete problems which arise from commonly agreed upon project contents which are interesting for everyone. Work is directed towards the elaboration of a concrete product (a clear project plan). The project thus defines contents and educational goals which young people recognize as reasonable and are therefore motivated for the acquisition of new skills and knowledge. The criteria of success is the quality of the end product, which also conditions the quality of the end product. Forms of work Project learning – optional and production learning Interest activities Individual work Optional project work Optional project work: participants independently prepare a project service, which is based on the selected interest area of the group of young people in the programme. The following areas are interesting especially for young people: modern media production (newspaper, multimedia presentation, video, theatre), expressive art (street theatre, appearances, design from different materials), travel, body-motion, decorative arts, nature-health. Production project work Connected to the preparation of the selected product, which promotes the educational activity in the broader area. During the practical work participants: acquire practical experience with work, form a relationship to work which they are interested in, get familiar with new ways of creativity, new manners of using less energy-consuming and environmentally friendly technologies, the manner of using natural materials, the possibility for recycling waste material, get acquainted with production… Interest activities * * * * * Participants have the possibility to engage in activities, which cannot be carried out within the framework of project work. Contents can include: the research of specific interest areas and broadening of horizons chosen by participants; visiting events, exhibitions, seeing the movie they choose or other media-submitted events; Thematic conversations with invited guests or a group talk about the selected topic; Recreational activities or other specially planned one-day projects (sport days, excursions, trips, parties); Social life. Individual work Main purpose: preparation of participants for the continuation of interrupted education. Preparation for exams (regular, re-examination, final, entrance) Goals of the programme: Acquiring functional knowledge and skills. Acquiring positive experience with learning. Help for the planning of the educational or career path. Development of creative thinking and of the critical eye. Results Evaluation research showed that every year 70 percent of participants re-enter: education, conclude education or find an employment.
