Flexibility that meets the needs of learners
When you’re delivering qualifications to a range of learners within the secure estate, an awarding body
that understands the challenges you face can have a major impact on the quality and effectiveness of
your delivery.
✔ Our qualifications are transferable and can follow the learner wherever they may be located.
✔ Programme delivery is flexible, meeting the individual needs of learners (see skills solution diagram for
details).
✔ Qualifications are designed with a focus on progression so that learners are always motivated and engaged throughout their learning journey.
What you need, when you need it
When learners need to change location at short notice,
the ability to access flexible assessment opportunities is
key to ensuring that they are able to achieve a unit or full
qualification. We’ve listened to your comments and are in the
process of making a number of improvements to our Autumn
2013 programme.
On-demand access to paper-based assessment
From October 2013, on-demand access to paper-based Functional Skills assessments in English, Maths
and ICT is available.
Faster turnaround of results
From October 2013, we have reduced the turnaround time for confirmed results with paper-based
Functional Skills to as little as 15 days.
Functional Skills on-screen testing in a secure environment
We are in the process of scheduling installations within prisons to enable learners to take Functional Skills
assessments in English and Maths on-screen.
Installation of the software is simple and should be in place with all OCR centres from October 2013.

Free access to resources
We believe in supporting our customers wherever we can. That’s why we provide an extensive range
of free, high-quality resources to accompany our range of qualifications.
Our resources are available free of charge and we will shortly make these resources accessible via the
Virtual Campus where applicable.

Numbers up to 1000
The teacher could start with a practical activity of recognising
the value of each digit in a three digit number up to 1000. Each
learner could be given a question to aid their understanding but
if unsure the question could be given to the group. Encourage
learners to write the correct number in words as well as digit
format.

subtract 2, three-digit number up to 999 without a calculator. This
can be demonstrated used columns. Learners could then multiply
1 hour

such as sharing a food bill, buying multiple music downloads and

FREE online Level Checker
Initial assessment is an essential part of the learning process. To help our customers, a free online Level
Checker is available to OCR customers through our Interchange system.
An example from the Level Checker
The online Level Checker can be used to determine the level of a learner’s ability before moving on to
pinpointing specific skills gaps using the Diagnostic Assessment Tool. The Diagnostic Assessment Tool creates
a personal profile that maps to the individual Cambridge Progression units that can be used to strengthen
skills in these areas.
4
FREE Diagnostic Assessment Tool
Our free Diagnostic Assessment Tool
can be used for English and Maths at
all levels from Entry Level 1 through
to Level 2. It provides a rigorous
diagnostic assessment and identifies
skills gaps within each level. Tutors
can use this information to target
the skills that their learners need,
using units from the Cambridge
Progression suite.
The OCR Diagnostic Assessment Tool
assesses underpinning skills in both
English and maths, together with
the process skills that learners need
to succeed on their vocational and
academic programmes.
An example from the Diagnostic Assessment Tool
The paper-based version is currently available to OCR customers through our Interchange system with an
online version scheduled to be available soon.
✔ It is free for OCR customers.
✔ It provides detailed information about your learners’ needs, so you can target support and skills programmes to meet individual requirements.
✔ It maps directly to the new Cambridge Progression suite of qualifications to secure underpinning skills.
✔ It links directly to mandatory English and Maths programmes including Functional Skills and GCSE.
✔ It can also be used as a diagnostic tool for all other courses of study to identify additional learning requirements, set individual targets and guide Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).

Take a look at the new Cambridge Progression suite
of qualifications
This suite of qualifications is our replacement for Basic Skills qualifications that ended in September
2012. They’re eligible for funding and support core English and maths skills within a framework of
bite-sized, credit-based units. Cambridge Progression units can be used to develop the underpinning
skills needed in English and maths so that learners can progress to Functional Skills and/or GCSEs.
They come with some great features:
