What you need, when you need it When learners need to change location at short notice, the ability to access flexible assessment opportunities is key to ensuring that they are able to achieve a unit or full qualification. We’ve listened to your comments and are in the process of making a number of improvements to our Autumn 2013 programme. On-demand access to paper-based assessment From October 2013, on-demand access to paper-based Functional Skills assessments in English, Maths and ICT is available. Faster turnaround of results From October 2013, we have reduced the turnaround time for confirmed results with paper-based Functional Skills to as little as 15 days. Functional Skills on-screen testing in a secure environment We are in the process of scheduling installations within prisons to enable learners to take Functional Skills assessments in English and Maths on-screen. Installation of the software is simple and should be in place with all OCR centres from October 2013. 3 Free access to resources We believe in supporting our customers wherever we can. That’s why we provide an extensive range of free, high-quality resources to accompany our range of qualifications. Our resources are available free of charge and we will shortly make these resources accessible via the Virtual Campus where applicable. Each learner could be given a question to aid their understanding but if unsure the question could be given to the group. Encourage learners to write the correct number in words as well as digit format. 40 minutes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication and Division The teacher could give learners practical calculations to add and subtract 2, three-digit number up to 999 without a calculator. This can be demonstrated used columns. Learners could then multiply 1 hour and divide two digit numbers by a single digit in familiar contexts such as sharing a food bill, buying multiple music downloads and going food shopping 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 OCR Cambridge Award/ Certificate in English Simple Algebra The teacher could give learners simple 2 step problems in a context. For example, learners have £10 and buy a CD for £4.50 how much change do they get? This will prepare learners and develop life skills. To help our customers, a free online Level Checker is available to OCR customers through our Interchange system. An example from the Level Checker The online Level Checker can be used to determine the level of a learner’s ability before moving on to pinpointing specific skills gaps using the Diagnostic Assessment Tool. The Diagnostic Assessment Tool creates a personal profile that maps to the individual Cambridge Progression units that can be used to strengthen skills in these areas. 4 FREE Diagnostic Assessment Tool Our free Diagnostic Assessment Tool can be used for English and Maths at all levels from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. It provides a rigorous diagnostic assessment and identifies skills gaps within each level. Tutors can use this information to target the skills that their learners need, using units from the Cambridge Progression suite. The OCR Diagnostic Assessment Tool assesses underpinning skills in both English and maths, together with the process skills that learners need to succeed on their vocational and academic programmes. An example from the Diagnostic Assessment Tool The paper-based version is currently available to OCR customers through our Interchange system with an online version scheduled to be available soon. ✔ It is free for OCR customers. ✔ It provides detailed information about your learners’ needs, so you can target support and skills programmes to meet individual requirements. ✔ It maps directly to the new Cambridge Progression suite of qualifications to secure underpinning skills. ✔ It links directly to mandatory English and Maths programmes including Functional Skills and GCSE. ✔ It can also be used as a diagnostic tool for all other courses of study to identify additional learning requirements, set individual targets and guide Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). They’re eligible for funding and support core English and maths skills within a framework of bite-sized, credit-based units. Cambridge Progression units can be used to develop the underpinning skills needed in English and maths so that learners can progress to Functional Skills and/or GCSEs. They come with some great features: Cambridge PROGRESSION Cambridge PROGRESSION Short delivery, between one and four credits with ‘spiky profile’ achievement Cambridge PROGRESSION Available on-screen and paper-based Cambridge PROGRESSION Externally assessed and marked by OCR (for English some units are also centre-assessed) Targeted to specific skills areas linked to the literacy and numeracy core curricula The suite is comprised of the OCR Cambridge Awards/Certificates in English and Maths and ranges from Entry Level to Level 2. The next addition to the suite will be IT, which is planned for launch in 2014.
