Pesticides and Endocrine Disrupters
Screen
Parasitology Concentrator
The Spincon concentrator works through
filtration of a surfactant-treated, preserved stool specimen to concentrate
specimens for detection of ova, cyst, and larval forms of parasites.
A series of three screens and centrifugation trap the stool debris
and fats, and allow for passage of parasites through the device. No
hazardous chemicals, such as formalin, ethyl acetate, or ether are
required with the system, and tubes do not require "swabbing out"
after centrifugation. Kits are available in 200 or 500 test size and
can be stored at room temperature.

The Behring Coagulation System (BCS) is
a high-speed, autostart, random-access
analyzer designed to perform clotting,
chromogenic, immunologic, and agglutination-based coagulation assays at speeds up to 350 tests per hour.
The BCS is ideal for large hospitals and reference laboratories with a
high volume of hemostastis and thrombosis testing. Several specialty
tests can be run simultaneously with no user programming required.

High-Volume Mycobacteria Growth and
Detection System
The BACTEC MGIT 960 Mycobacteria
Culture System has just received Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) clearance. It
features an unprecedented 960-tube capacity for throughput of up to 8,000 specimens per year. It provides continuous
monitoring of patient samples to identify
positives as they occur, and safe, efficient, on board incubation with
no sharps as well as no need to transfer tubes after the system is
loaded. The product is nonradiometric and uses MGIT media,
patented sensors, and advanced fluorometric technology. Bar code
scanning, convenient four-step operation, and automated quality
control simplifies operations.

and to mimic the incision motion of the
original template bleeding time method.
Its technology provides a minor, standardized incision 1.0 mm deep and 5.0
mm long for accurately assessing platelet/vessel interaction The
Triplett Bleeding Time Device embodies the goal of standardization in bleeding time testing based on an affordable price.

FastTag Texas red nucleic acid labeling kit
utilizes the latest technology for coupling
nonradioisotopic labels to DNA, RNA, or
oligonucleotides. This method utilizes
heat- or photo-activation to uniformly
incorporate a universal FastTag linker arm
into the nucleic acid. Applications for the Texas red-labeled nucleic
acids include in situ hybridization (that can be either directly
detected or amplified), Southern and Northern blot hybridization,
polymerase chain reaction amplification, and colony and plaque
hybridization.

Hewlett Packard (HP) recendy published
a paper describing a method used to
screen for 567 pesticides and suspected
endocrine disrupters. The method relies on retention time locking
(RTL), a procedure that enables analyte retention times to be
reproduced independent of the gas chromatograph system, column length, or detector as long as columns with the same stationary phase, nominal-phase ratio, and diameter are used. This
procedure narrows an analyte's identity to a few possibilities. The
application note is available now without charge from HP sales
offices worldwide.

Sample Mini Bleach Towelettes
Mini Hype-Wipe bleach towelettes are
perfect for disinfecting glucometers,
wiping equipment, and cleaning up
small spills. The bleach strength in the
individually packaged 3 in X 3 in towelettes (a 1:10 dilution) meets
CDC/OSHA recommendations for disinfecting equipment and
surfaces against hepatitis B, HIV, most bacteria, and other
pathogens. The towelettes provide more convenience and portability than mixing bleach in-house or using prediluted sprays.

So-Low laboratory freezer model
C85-5, used for biological
storage, plasma, blood cells, and
microbiology specimens has an
adjustable temperature range
from - 4 0 ° to -85°C. Every
freezer is tested under the most
demanding conditions for seven
days. A constant ultra-low
temperature is assumed. Service
is made simple through an easily
accessed condenser area.

Validated Plasma Shipper
Polyfoam Packers offers an
economic, insulating foam
container validated by an
independent testing laboratory
for shipping fresh frozen plasma.
(FFP). The validated container
provides a I \ in wall thickness and measures 161 in X 13 j in X
151 in outside. The shipper will accommodate up to 24 400-mL
bags of frozen plasma and is ideal for use by blood banks,
hospitals, hematologists, research facilities, and others requiring
high-performance containers. A die-cut corrugated tray provides
a tight friction fit with the container, and allows the cold source
to be elevated above the plasma, avoiding direct contact with it.
The tray is capable of holding 20 lb of dry ice and features finger
relief holes for easy handling.

Virus-Inactivated Blood
Component
PLAS+SD is the first US FDAapproved product to virtually
eliminate specific viruses in the
plasma component of the blood.
It provides increased protection
because it undergoes a special
process called solvent-detergent
(SD) treatment. The SD treatment
I
dissolves the lipid coating of
certain viruses that may be present in the blood, while leaving
needed plasma proteins such as fibrinogen and ' ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ B
immunoglobulins intact. Clinical studies show that the
treatment reduces the risk of transmitting lipid-enveloped
viruses, including those responsible for AIDS (HIV), hepatitis
B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV).

Automated Blood Banking
System
^mmmmmaM
The first fully automated blood
bank system, Immucor
ABS2000, was recently deare
for marketing by the FDA.
Automated ABO/Rh, donor
confirmation using hemagglutination, and patient antibody
screen and donor cross matching using solid-phase
technology allow increased productions in the blood bank.
The ABS2000 reduces standard serology tests from 23 manual
tasks to three steps: (1) load the samples; (2) choose the assay;
and (3) walkaway.

Active Renin is a coated-bead immunoradiometric (IRMA) assay for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.
Unlike assays that determine plasma
renin activity, this product allows for the "direct" determination of
active renin, by utilizing an antibody pair specific for renin. Renin,
a proteolytic enzyme secreted from the renal cortex, plays a vital
role in the renin-angiotension system, which regulates blood pressure and water and electrolyte retention by the kidneys.
