Please call for details. Say Hello to Bioheat® Fuel Have you met our friend Bioheat® fuel? What about ULSHO? If not, then it’s time to get reacquainted with the fuel that heats your home. Also known as ultra-low sulfur heating oil, ULSHO gets its name from its “ultra-low” sulfur content of only 15 parts-per-million (ppm). By containing less sulfur, this fuel produces fewer harmful emissions, making it safer for the environment. In fact, a recently implemented Massachusetts Department of Energy regulation mandates that all heating oil sold in the state contain no more than 500 sulfur ppm by July 1, 2014, and no more than 15 ppm by July 1, 2018. “L F M fo c At MacFarlane Energy, we take environmental safety even further by delivering Bioheat® fuel, a mixture of ULSHO with renewable biodiesel. Since MacFarlane Energy delivers Bioheat® fuel to all of our heating oil customers, we are at least four full years ahead of those companies that only meet the state-mandated minimum sulfur requirements. We are even further ahead considering that our Bioheat® fuel blend is safer, cleaner and virtually sulfur-free. All this serves as evidence of the fact that when you choose MacFarlane Energy to heat your home, you are getting nothing but the best in terms of fuel quality and service expertise. For more information on Bioheat® fuel, visit us online at www.MacFarlaneEnergy.com. • Install fire extinguishers close to exits and always keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device, so you can make a quick escape if the fire cannot be controlled. •P urchase multi-purpose portable fire extinguishers that are large enough to put out a small fire, but aren’t so heavy that they’re hard to handle. •R ead the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and familiarize yourself with all the necessary parts and operating procedures. • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS: - Pull the pin; hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you; and release the locking mechanism. - Aim low; point the extinguisher at the base of the fire. - Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. - Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side. • Most importantly, don’t try to be a hero. In case of a fire, your first move should always be getting everyone out of the home and calling 9-1-1. Use a portable fire extinguisher only when the fire is confined to a small area and isn’t growing, when everyone else has exited the building, when the fire department has been called or is being called, and if the room isn’t filled with smoke. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately. Energy marketers ASSOCIATION honors scott macfarlane On September 22, 2014, the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association honored our President, Scott D. MacFarlane, with its 2014 Leadership Award. Scott has served as Chairman of the MEMA Board of Directors and currently serves on the leadership fundraising team of the American Energy Coalition. Michael Ferrante, MEMA’s President, says that Scott has helped him numerous times with government affairs matters impacting Boston and the Greater Boston Area. “The term ‘industry leader’ is so fitting for Scott,” he said. “Over the years he has continued to demonstrate that he will do whatever it takes to assist the industry and to advance the agendas of MEMA and the New England Fuel Institute.” MEMA honored Scott with a plaque during the 2014 Southern New England Energy Conference in Newport, R.I. 3 Meet One of Our Best: John Gearin, Installation Tech John Gearin has been working with MacFarlane Energy for the entirety of his 28-year career. He recalls starting out as a service technician and spending a few restless nights in Boston basements, working on boilers. “You’d be working until the sun came up,” he says, “literally, 24-hour days.” While an overnight shift is certainly no picnic, John always wanted to do installation work because, as he says, “it’s a little more of a challenge.” Such is his drive. As a youngster, John was “always into messing around with mechanical stuff, working on my bike, then helping my father with the boat and the car.” Just as he graduated from bike chains to automotive engines, he has proven himself adaptable to countless changes in heating technology. Today, John is clearly one of the most experienced and knowledgeable technicians at MacFarlane Energy, yet he insists that when it comes to the job, “There is no seniority.” In speaking about the camaraderie that exists among the MacFarlane Energy team, John says: “Working with a good group of guys makes the day go by easier. When you go into a basement, it’s not like, ‘You’re going to do this; I’m going to do that.’ Whatever has to get done gets done.” This kind of familiarity is something that hits close to home for John. Longtime Southie residents John and his wife, Sheila, have raised three children in the neighborhood. “It’s a real tight community,” John says, adding, “You can’t walk down the block without seeing seven or eight people you know.” Never one to shy from a challenge, John also bowls in a candlepin league. When asked to describe the biggest difference between bowling and candlepin, he laughs and says, “Put it this way: no one’s ever bowled a 300 in candlepin.” Though his candlepin average may hover around a respectable 100, John’s installation record is as close to perfect as it gets, and for that we say, “Thank you, John Gearin. You truly are one of our best.” 95 Bridge Street Dedham, MA 02026 macfarlaneenergy.com Follow us on Ugliest Heating System contest Do you have an outdated boiler in your basement?
