Message from the President
A New Season, A New Look and a New
Addition to the MacFarlane Team
Welcome to the Fall 2014 edition of The MacFarlane Report, to a
beautiful New England Autumn, and to the start of another heating
season powered by Bioheat® fuel. The MacFarlane team is
highly trained in the handling and delivery of Bioheat® fuel, so if
you’re looking for clean, green heating solutions, we’re the ones to
call. Speaking of our team, I wanted to take a moment to welcome our
newest addition.
One year ago this month, my wife Cathy and I became grandparents
to a healthy, handsome baby boy. The MacFarlanes are known
for keeping New Englanders’ homes warm, but trust me when I say that never have our
hearts been filled with such warmth as that which our grandson brings to our lives every day.
My son Scott and his wife, Monica, are truly blessed to have such a wonderful son, and we are
utterly thrilled to wish Parker MacFarlane a Very Happy First Birthday this October.
In other news, MacFarlane Energy is happy to announce that our freshly redesigned website is
coming very soon. The web address has not changed (MacFarlaneEnergy.com), but the design
is modernized and the navigation is smoother. It will be easier than ever for you to get the fuels,
services, and facts you need to keep your home warm this Fall and Winter.

Are You Up For an Upgrade?
Every fall you tell yourself this will be the year you finally replace that ancient boiler or furnace
that is collecting dust (and wasting energy) in your basement, but then you look at prices and
decide your old equipment can hold out for another year. MacFarlane Energy wants to put an
end to this destructive cycle! We’re here to show you how you can finally upgrade your outdated
heating equipment without breaking the bank.
Mass Save® HEAT Loan Program

These savings are just the beginning. The real savings will start
after you have your equipment installed, because high-efficiency
heating systems can reduce your fuel expenses by up to 50 percent.
That means your new system will pay for itself in just a few years,
and after that, you’ll continue to save more every year. With
this in mind, it’s clear that upgrading to high-efficiency heating
equipment is a great short- and long-term investment.
To begin saving sooner rather than later, call 781-326-9500
today.
Fire Safety Reminders
At MacFarlane Energy, your comfort and safety are our first priority.
That’s why we offer 24-hour emergency services all year
round. This month, we’re also celebrating Fire Prevention Week by
providing a list of helpful fire extinguisher safety reminders. Please
remember to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors twice a year, exercise caution at all times, and
call 9-1-1 in the event of a fire.

Say Hello to
Bioheat® Fuel
Have you met our friend Bioheat® fuel? What about ULSHO?
If not, then it’s time to get reacquainted with the fuel
that heats your home.
Also known as
ultra-low sulfur
heating oil, ULSHO
gets its name
from its “ultra-low”
sulfur content of only 15 parts-per-million (ppm). By containing
less sulfur, this fuel produces fewer harmful emissions,
making it safer for the environment. In fact, a recently
implemented Massachusetts Department of Energy regulation
mandates that all heating oil sold in the state contain no more
than 500 sulfur ppm by July 1, 2014, and no more than 15
ppm by July 1, 2018.

At MacFarlane Energy, we take environmental safety even
further by delivering Bioheat® fuel, a mixture of ULSHO with
renewable biodiesel. Since MacFarlane Energy delivers
Bioheat® fuel to all of our heating oil customers, we
are at least four full years ahead of those companies that only
meet the state-mandated minimum sulfur requirements. We
are even further ahead considering that our Bioheat® fuel
blend is safer, cleaner and virtually sulfur-free.
All this serves as evidence of the fact that when you choose
MacFarlane Energy to heat your home, you are getting nothing
but the best in terms of fuel quality and service expertise. For
more information on Bioheat® fuel, visit us online at
www.MacFarlaneEnergy.com.
• Install fire extinguishers close to exits and always keep
your back to a clear exit when you use the device, so you can
make a quick escape if the fire cannot be controlled.
•P
urchase multi-purpose portable fire extinguishers that
are large enough to put out a small fire, but aren’t so heavy that
they’re hard to handle.
•R
ead the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and familiarize yourself with all the necessary
parts and operating procedures.
• To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
- Pull the pin; hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you; and release the locking
mechanism.
- Aim low; point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
- Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
• Most importantly, don’t try to be a hero. In case of a fire, your first move should always be getting
everyone out of the home and calling 9-1-1. Use a portable fire extinguisher only when the fire
is confined to a small area and isn’t growing, when everyone else has exited the building, when the fire
department has been called or is being called, and if the room isn’t filled with smoke. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.

Meet One of Our Best: John Gearin, Installation Tech
John Gearin has been
working with MacFarlane
Energy for the entirety
of his 28-year career.
He recalls starting out
as a service technician
and spending a few
restless nights in Boston
basements, working on boilers. “You’d be
working until the sun came up,” he says,
“literally, 24-hour days.” While an overnight shift
is certainly no picnic, John always wanted to
do installation work because, as he says, “it’s a
little more of a challenge.” Such is his drive.
As a youngster, John was “always into
messing around with mechanical stuff, working
on my bike, then helping my father with the boat
and the car.” Just as he graduated from bike
chains to automotive engines, he has proven
himself adaptable to countless changes in heating
technology. Today, John is clearly one of the most
experienced and knowledgeable technicians at
MacFarlane Energy, yet he insists that when it
comes to the job, “There is no seniority.”
In speaking about the camaraderie that exists
among the MacFarlane Energy team, John says:
“Working with a good group of guys makes the
day go by easier. When you go into a basement,
it’s not like, ‘You’re going to do this; I’m going to
do that.’ Whatever has to get done gets done.”
This kind of familiarity is something that hits close
to home for John. Longtime Southie residents
John and his wife, Sheila, have raised three
children in the neighborhood. “It’s a real tight
community,” John says, adding, “You can’t
walk down the block without seeing seven or
eight people you know.”
Never one to shy from a challenge, John
also bowls in a candlepin league. When asked
to describe the biggest difference between
bowling and candlepin, he laughs and says,
“Put it this way: no one’s ever bowled a 300
in candlepin.” Though his candlepin average
may hover around a respectable 100, John’s
installation record is as close to perfect as it
gets, and for that we say, “Thank you, John
Gearin. You truly are one of our best.”
