ESW Lunchtime Seminar Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research (CHEER) Wednesday 29th June, 12.30-2.00pm Room 101, Fulton Professor Bruce Macfarlane, University of Hong Kong presents: “What are university professors for? Exploring intellectual leadership” ____________________________________________ The phrase ‘intellectual leadership’ is often invoked but rarely explained. Drawing on his recent research (Macfarlane, 2011), Professor Macfarlane will argue the importance of recovering the idea of intellectual leadership as a counter-weight to growing managerialism in higher education particularly in (re)defining the role of (full) professors. One way of understanding intellectual leadership in higher education is to consider how the privileges of academic freedom may be balanced with the responsibilities of academic duty. Professor Macfarlane will present a model of intellectual leadership with four orientations to illustrate how this concept can be better understood and applied to the role of university professors. This seminar is based on a forthcoming book to be published by Routledge (Macfarlane, 2012) and a recent paper in Studies in Higher Education (Macfarlane, 2011).
