Work Instructions WI-12 LINC – Nissan Jackson Operations Rapid Charge Batteries - Equalizing Instructions Version: 1.0 Date: 3/18/13 Subject: This work instruction describes how to inspect, how to charge and how to equalize rapid (quick) charge batteries. Equipment: 1) Forklift 2) Battery charging station General Requirements: • • See Standardized Work Instructions for Dock staff See JSA (Job Safety Analysis). Special Requirements: All rapid charge batteries are inspected & charged daily and, equalized once every 7 days. Rapid Charge Battery Equalizing Instructions Pictures 1. Ensure there is no trash on the forklift or on the battery since batteries become very hot when charging and while equalizing. 2. Open the battery compartment to allow maximum airflow to the batteries (Figure 1). 3. Check to make sure the battery is clean of all foreign objects (i.e. paperclips, rubber bands, pens, paper, etc.). Figure 1: Open battery compartment to ensure max airflow and battery area is clean of debris 4. Plug in the battery cable to the charger cable at the battery charging station (Figure 2). 5. At this time the forklift will start charging; this will take 15-30 minutes to complete. 6. Once the green light on the charger comes on, push the equalize button (Figure 3). L I G H T S Plug this in Do NOT Plug it here 7. The forklift battery is now in equalizing mode, Figure 2: Plug battery cable to charger cable which takes approximately 7 hours. 8. Once equalizing is completed, the green light will come on. 9. Remove the charger cord from the battery cord and plug the battery cord back into the forklift. Check the water level light to ensure the light is blinking green (Figure 4). 11. If the light is red, the battery requires water and the Lead or Supervisor if notified (refer to “adding water” instructions). Water level light 12.
