Post yesterday for his new Burlington assignment as manager of Its Asheville, N. C, blanket plant w fh iho sner good wishes of this
ent.ie com. unity.
Mr. Slatar has a very good track record
with Burlington and has been a Texan for
the last eight years. He faces a tough assignment jn getting the Ashvlll plcnt, which
began operation in April of 1971, into the
"Burlington groove.'
His succesws here and at Sherman before commg to Post mode his selection for
the Asheville position a good one. Vic Is a
hard works who will learn about blankets
as he goes along.
Not only did Mr. Stater help Post by
iob at Postex, but he
doing a good over-al- l
took a lively interest In local civic affairs. He
made the Post Chamber of Commerce an
excellent president in 1971.
The contributions of the Burlington Foundation to West Texas Boys Ranch and the
$3,000 to the Memorial Building Fund of the
Post Public Library came on his Initiative and
recommendation.

Possessed with a warm and cheery personality, Mr. Slater was a real community
ambassador for Burlington In Post and this
area.
It was obvious Friday night at the dinner
at which his new assignment was announced
held in high esteem both by
and local civic leaders. There were a
lot of warm words said for the job Vic has
done here with Postex In Post.
Although a nativo of Falrhaven, Mass.,
Mr Slater In the last eight years has become
a real Texan. He and his family were very
happy here, but to climb higher with a big
corporation like Burlington requires that one
b willing to accept new challenges and responsibilities.
Vic has done that with obvious mixed
amotions. He and his wife, Irma, have liked
their life here in Post. But the challenge for
Vic is now in Asheville, N. C.
We have no qualms that Vic will do a
real job in this new assignment. Wo know
the Slaters' many friends and acquaintances

continued success in their years ahead with

So what's going to happen?
That is on interesting question. Briscoe,
since his November election, has become virtually a recluse. The news media, the legislators, government and business leaders, and
the public in general know very tittle about
his intentions for the first term.
The governor has difficulty enough when

The future seems promising In the house,
too, where the speaker was not only dumped,
but convicted in the stock fraud scandal. Any
legislator that selres the power of the speakership certainly has the "news from home"
on how the people expect he and his buddies
to conduct themselves.
The state's problems remain virtually
unchanged. There is good likelihood with
massive federal revenue sharing funds that
the state can avoid tax increases this year. A
respite for the taxpayers will be welcome.
Our prediction on the upcoming legislative session is the simple advice not to expect
too much too quickly. It's almost a brand new
legislature ond a new state official family
going into office.
They will move slowly and carefully.
There won't be such flomboyancy In Austin
this winter in our opinion and we will be
thankful for that.
But human nature hasn't changed, and
neither have the legislative processos nor the
problems facing the state. The voters in the
end will expect too much and be disappointed.

The Texas Railroad Commission
was created In 1891 for the purpose
of regulating railroad rates and
traffic, preventing discriminatory
practices and enforcing state law
concerning railroads generally.
In 1917 it was given by statute
the authority to supervise the pro
duction of oil and gas In Texas.
Today the regulation of this Indus
try Is one of the major functions
of the agency.
Tho commission is also charged
with the duty of enforcing laws
pertaining to reasonable prices on
natural gas and fair rote charges
for producing, transporting, distributing, buying, selling, and delivering natural gas by pipelines.
It apportions the natural gas supply
among towns, cities, and corporations.
Another of the commission's responsibilities Is that of regulating
matters affecting tho supervision
of transporting property for hire
by motor vehicles on the Texas
public highways. The commission
fixes the rates which motor carriers may charge for their
