Spare Parts Management – Innovative Methods for Better Assets Utilization
Today we find that a lot of machines are lying idle for want of spare parts. This certainly does not
mean shortage of spare parts. Our experience shows that for every spare used, five or more parts
are held in stores, which perhaps may not be used & obsolete.
Spare parts form lifeblood to enhance reliability as well as plant capacity. Machines cannot
operate at a high level of output without a reliable supply of requisite spare parts. Spare parts form
the substratum on which operational reliability is built and this requires appropriate storage,
treatment of, and timely access to the requisite parts. However, spare parts management
disregarded contributor to reliability outcomes.
Innovative Management of spare parts enables manufacturing organizations to maintain a high
service level and optimize the inventory costs. However, fits and starts demand patterns are often
characterizing spare parts, having periods of zero demand, with occasional periods with non-zero
demands and in addition can be highly variable in quantity size. Further theorganizations must be
aware that some spare parts can be critical, and stock-out costs might result disproportionally high
compared to the cost of the item.
In the last two decades, the manufacturing and process industries have undergone fundamental
changes with the presence of ever-increasing automation, sophisticated IT infrastructure,
electronics and microprocessor-based equipment (DCS) in every aspect of the business. These
changes have opened up a new, very complex class of equipment with random failure pattern
(electronics fail at random and failure rate is unpredictable) and calls for sophisticated
troubleshooting skills. Consequently, it is important to develop management strategies to ensure
that the required levels of plant uptime, cost and business risk are met at the lowest possible cost.
One of the biggest surprises over the years is the relatively low number of asset managers that
take the maintenance of spare parts seriously.
