In the run-up to the European Union referendum, a shift in momentum towards the ‘Leave’ campaign in the opinion polls fuelled demand for government bonds. The yield on the 10-year bund German Bund turned negative for the first time in mid-June, and the yield on the 10-year US Treasury fell to its lowest level in almost four years. The ‘Leave’ victory prompted an even sharper fall in bond yields. The 10-year gilt yield reached a historic low of 0.87% by 30 June. Corporate bonds delivered strong positive returns over the quarter. April was strong for credit as the yield spread over their government-issued equivalents narrowed considerably. As we entered May, nervousness about the June referendum started to build, leading to a modest underperformance of credit versus gilts. Domestic credits underperformed overseas corporate bonds. Corporate bonds underperformed significantly in June, with subordinated bonds issued by UK banks and insurers bearing the brunt. At quarter end, risk assets started to recover their poise from the referendum vote, perhaps looking forward to further stimulation measures from global governments.
