Construction (Infield Re-Skinning/Renovation)
At the direction of the Construction Manager, Baseball infield soil will be delivered to the sites
and spread in front of the fine graded backstop and elsewhere on the infield as needed:
a) Establish arc of field. This is to be done based on the placement location of the new home
plate and pitching rubber not the existing. This will result in some cases excavating into
the outfield area.
b) Excavate infield to a depth of 2”. Resulting materials, unless otherwise agreed upon, shall
be removed from the site and disposed of by the contractor.
c) Excavated infield is to now be loosened by means of on aerovator, rototiller or Harley
rake to a depth of 2” (4” total). Resulting rocks and debris ½” diameter and greater are to
be removed.
d) The “lip” area (the edge between the dirt and the grass) is to be removed and repaired so
as to create a smooth transition between the infield and the outfield. This may entail
removing up to 6’ of sod, re-grading the “lip” area and replacing the sod with MD
certified tall fescue. This may not be required on every field.
e) Spread new infield mix and incorporate into the existing infield. Infield material is to be
21/2” thick, approximate quantity- 75 tons and is to be “Diamond Dirt” or approved
equal. The “Diamond Dirt” can be obtained from TURF & Dirt in Eldersburg MD.
f) Ideally, the infield will be laser graded at a 1% slope from the pitcher’s mound in all
directions. This is to done wherever surrounding grades allow. Otherwise infields will be
leveled to match the surrounding grades and backstops.
g) Skinned area is now to receive 3 tons of calcined clay. This is to be mixed into the top 1
½”. Approved material suppliers are Turface MVP, Diamond Pro, Soil Master or other
approved material suppliers.
h) The infield is now to be rolled tight with a minimum weight of 250lbs. Per linier foot and
a maximum of 500lbs. Per linier foot. Example- a 6’ roller is to weigh between 1500 and
3000 lbs.
i) New pitching rubbers and home plates are to be constructed per the attached drawing and

installed. Home plate is to be set at 20’ from the backstop and pitching rubbers are to be
set at 50’, measuring from the white point of home plate to the front edge of the pitching
rubber.
j) The wear areas at the Mound (50 sq.ft.) and the home plate area (75 sq.ft.) are to be
constructed with special mound and home plate clays. They are to be a minimum of 4”
thick if using loose bagged material, 2 1/2” if using formed clay bricks. Approved
material suppliers are Diamond Pro, Turface, Stabilizer Solutions or other approved
material suppliers.
k) A final light top dressing (1/4”) of calcined clay is to be applied to infield and then rolled
by the same method as in f. above.
