IntelliTeam® DEM Distributed Energy Management System for managing the S&C PureWave® Community Energy Storage System S&C’s IntelliTeam® DEM Distributed Energy Management System The IntelliTeam® DEM Distributed Energy Management System can manage a fleet of up to one thousand S&C PureWave® Community Energy Storage Units. The aggregation of energy storage units can defer—or eliminate—the need for additional build-out of an electrical utility distribution system to handle peak power consumption needs at the feeder, substation, or system level. PureWave Community Energy Storage Unit. The self-contained, rack-mountable IntelliTeam DEM Controller is typically installed in the utility distribution substation, and communicates with the energy storage units, as well as the SCADA system, if applicable, through DNP 3.0. The controller features an easy-to-use interface based on IntelliTeam® Designer—the main setup tool for S&C’s field-proven IntelliTeam® SG Automatic Restoration System. The interface offers a detailed “dashboard” view of each energy storage unit, and can also provide access to a distribution management system or other utility enterprise system. Multiple Applications, Multiple Benefits IntelliTeam DEM Controller software allows the single-phase energy storage units to simultaneously perform a variety of functions, including: • Peak shaving/load leveling. • Renewable generation integration. The energy storage units store excess energy produced by consumers’ small-scale renewable generators, and are dispatched as needed to meet peak power demands. • Reactive power compensation. The energy storage units are dispatched as needed to supply real or reactive power, simultaneously, on a perphase basis, to improve phase balance. 2 • • Voltage optimization. The energy storage units are dispatched as needed to regulate feeder voltages. Reliability improvement. The energy storage units are dispatched as needed to supply backup power to consumers. A Scalable, Balanced Solution A major advantage of community energy storage is its scalability. The number of energy storage units in a fleet can be small initially, and grow over time to offset load growth . . . pacing capital outlay in a measured, controllable manner. The IntelliTeam DEM Controller can readily accommodate this growth with its ability to manage up to 1000 energy storage units. Fully Automated Charging and Discharging The IntelliTeam DEM Controller provides fully automated charging and discharging of each energy storage unit, individually, using either of two approaches: • Scheduled. Charging and discharging are performed at scheduled times each day of the week. • Load following. Charging and discharging are performed as needed, to maintain target demand at the feeder and substation transformer levels. A sophisticated algorithm optimizes the power output of the entire fleet based on the charge state of each available energy storage unit. The algorithm takes into consideration the energy which will be needed if an outage occurs, and operation in islanding mode is effected. Alternately, the energy storage units may be individually commanded by personnel in the utility distribution operations center, to charge or discharge at a particular rate. High Reliability, Minimal Maintenance The IntelliTeam DEM Controller has been designed for utmost reliability. The controller features redundant processors and data storage, and nonvolatile random-access memory. Configuration settings and operational data are all replicated and saved, in near real time, to a database at a remote location, for use if recovery is ever necessary. The controller has no moving parts such as disk drives or fans. The IntelliTeam DEM Controller accepts two power sources—a primary and a secondary—in a wide range of ac and dc voltages. The controller will automatically power up when one of the sources is available, allowing automatic recovery if both sources are lost and one source subsequently returns. The IntelliTeam DEM Controller uses IP network time as its primary time source, with GPS as its secondary time source and an on-board clock as its tertiary time source. Software upgrades can be performed locally, through USB, serial, or Ethernet connection, or remotely over any communication medium that supports DNP 3.0. Highly Secure IntelliTeam DEM Controller architecture is highly secure. User authentication and multiple user roles and access levels are supported. Quality IntelliTeam DEM Controller is manufactured by S&C in an ISO 9001 certified facility. Thousands of S&C controls are in use worldwide. Project Support Services S&C’s Power Systems Services staff can assist you with design, construction, and implementation of your PureWave® Community Energy Storage System project. Their sophisticated feeder simulations can emulate and test any proposed system configuration.
