ALFRED TALKE Logistic Services
HISTORY
1947
Alfred Talke Snr founds a transport company to serve chemical companies
in the Rhineland. Just five years later, he begins using his first, specially
developed tanker for the transport of acids and alkalis.
1970
The company moves to its current headquarters in Hürth near
Cologne. One of Germany´s centres of chemical manufacturing is
just a stone’s throw away.
1985
Company-wide safety training is introduced as part of the
TIPS (TALKE’s Intense Personnel Training) programme,
once again making the TALKE Group a pioneer in industry
safety.
1989
TALKE begins its first ever outsourcing project for
a customer in Antwerp. Since then, on-site logistics
have been one of the Group’s most sought-after
services.
2003
TALKE gains its first customer in the Middle
East and takes on its first outsourcing project
in the region. This marks the beginning of its
success story in the Arabian Gulf.
2015
TALKE establishes the Chemical
Competence Alliance (CCA) with
other chemical logistics specialists.
The open network of logistics specialists is an innovative concept that
offers customers in the chemical and
petrochemical industries even greater
efficiency and flexibility.

TRANSPORT
The Chemical Competence Alliance
– powerful solutions from a single source
TALKE offers the flexibility of a medium-sized
company – but is also in a position to meet the full
range of demands of global players in the chemical
industry. This is supported by the fact that we have
teamed up with other chemical logistics specialists
to create the Chemical Competence Alliance. The
partners in the alliance can offer highly complex
supply chains as a package solution and handle
especially large shipping volumes – for example,
by effectively sharing equipment. For customers,
working with the CCA is remarkably straightforward, because they have a dedicated contact person for all services. In addition, an independent
fourth-party logistics provider (4PL) – who is not
a member of the alliance itself – ensures that the
CCA’s logistics services are offered under fair market conditions. This guarantees neutrality, trans-
parency and economic efficiency. In short, the CCA
is a new, open and transparent logistics network
with the capacity and flexibility to reliably transport small, medium and large volumes. It therefore
combines the strengths of several transport networks with the benefits of a coordinated approach.
Chemical companies of all sizes will benefit from
this cooperation through maximum service reliability and optimised costs and processes.
We handle every enquiry on a case-by-case basis.
This allows us to offer customers economical transport solutions
that meet their needs and fit perfectly into their supply chains.
In doing so, we bring two key advantages to the table.
First, we are experts in the transportation of chemicals
and other sensitive materials.
Second, TALKE can offer companies in the chemical industry
a full range of logistics services from a single source.

ETER VIEBIG, DIRECTOR TRANSPORT AT TALKE
IT-Innovation:
development partnership with SAP
TALKE is contributing to the development of the SAP TM transportation management system
as an SAP development partner. The business software manufacturer draws on the knowledge of selected customers to tailor its products as closely as
possible to meet the needs of the market. TALKE’s
“co-innovation partnership” with SAP is beneficial to
both parties; SAP is learning about its customers’
requirements first-hand, while the logistics specialist is providing its practical experience and requirements to the development of the software. The advantage for customers in the chemical industry: as
many manufacturers and their customers also work
with SAP systems, their IT systems can integrate
seamlessly with TALKE’s.
Documented transport safety
Our transport network and equipment maintenance core services fully meet the SQAS Transport
Services and Tank Cleaning standards. TALKE’s
head office in Hürth, near Cologne, has also been
approved as an inspection body for intermediate
bulk containers (IBCs) by the German Federal Office
for Materials Research and Inspection.

TALKE supports chemical, petrochemical and life science companies with a network of storage
facilities and logistics services.
We offer a full range of warehousing services to help
boost the efficiency of your manufacturing and distribution processes. Demand is growing, not just for packaging and re-packaging services, but also for our on-site

plus plant maintenance, regular inspections including
documentation, and stock management using ware-
house management systems. Years of experience in onsite services around the world make TALKE the perfect
outsourcing partner.
Our state-of-the-art single and multi-client centres provide a firm foundation for high-powered logistics solutions. We store and handle almost every product from
our customers’ industries, including solid and liquid

common in the chemical industry – naturally in all of
the usual packaging types or as bulk materials in silos
and tankers, with temperature-controlled options also
available on request.
As well as secure storage, many of our sites also offer
extensive value-added services. There is high demand
for packaging and re-packaging in containers and receptacles of all sizes. From silos to bags and from tanks
to canisters – we can meet the demands placed by the
supply chain or market. If required, we can also extract
small quantities as laboratory and product samples.
Where products have specific quality criteria, for example moisture content, we’ll monitor this in close coordination with our customers’ quality assurance teams. We
can also process products on request.
MATERIALS WE STORE
Generally we provide our logistics services for all of the
materials we transport, including non-hazardous liquid
and dry bulk products, hazardous goods of virtually all

TALKE at the CHEMPARK – the best of both worlds
The TALKE Group also operates at the Leverkusen and Dormagen CHEMPARK sites – making it
an immediate neighbour of some of the most successful chemical companies in Europe. This reinforces TALKE’s position as one of Europe’s leading
on-site logistics specialists. With such highly specialised logistics sites so close to our customers,
we’ve successfully combined global expertise with
maximum flexibility. First, we can store, pick, and
transport large volumes of chemicals across the
TALKE network at short notice. Second, we’re also
in the position to package and re-package small
volumes for testing and sampling – and thanks to

Good reasons to consult
with industry and logistics
specialists
Logistics projects are complicated. When building and operating a logistics facility, companies
have to adhere to countless rules and regulations, respect deadlines, and a lot more besides.
On top of this, they have to consider the specific conditions and requirements of each site.
Acquiring this knowledge is a truly Herculean task that extends beyond the core business of
chemical and petrochemical manufacturers. TALKE already has this knowledge – combined
with years of experience operating plants and networks for chemical logistics. What’s more,
our specialist teams know the properties and requirements of your products, and draw on this
expertise to select the facilities and processes best suited to your needs. In doing so, we give our
customers the opportunity to boost their efficiency and gain a long-term competitive advantage.
CONSULTING
•Logistics analysis and consulting, development of recommendations for optimisation
•Supply chain concepts to meet your company’s specific requirements
•Integration of best practice solutions into
your processes
We’ll analyse every aspect of your set-up. Do you have
enough silos and other storage capacity, what packaging
makes most sense, which machines will you need, and
how can you secure the best contracts with suppliers
and partners?
Last but not least, how many employees do you need
and with which qualifications – and who will train
them? This is where you particularly benefit from the
fact that TALKE can implement the outcome of these
discussions. When we operate a plant on-site for
you, for example, you’ll
enjoy the cost benefits that
come with outsourcing.
SUPPLY CHAIN OPTIMISATION
•Review of supply chain resources used
(staff, materials, IT systems, buildings,
routes, facilities, etc.)
•Analysis of operative and administrative
processes
• Profitability studies, for example regarding
tariffs vs. operative costs
• Material flow analyses
TALKE’s interdisciplinary Logistic Solutions teams
develop modern and efficient supply chain concepts
tailored to the specific requirements of our customers,
their sites and products. With extensive knowledge of
chemical logistics and years of experience in the industry,
we implement proven best practice solutions.

• Tailored project design
• Comprehensive project controlling
• Commissioning and start-up
From conception and planning to beyond, we use professional project management and recruiting – plus tailored
project planning, implementation and controlling – to
help customers create bespoke chemical logistics solutions.
How the TALKE-teams consultancy works
TALKE relies on the knowledge of numerous specialists throughout the company when handling
construction and modernisation projects. Our
project teams therefore consist of experts from
a variety of fields. These professionals closely examine processes and identify what changes need
to or could be made. Naturally, they also consider
how the site needs to grow and develop in the future. Themes such as volumes, products and safety
measures are discussed and evaluated at workshops with the customer. Our teams then develop
and present suggestions for improvement based on
their findings. They also assist customers once the
project has been completed – for instance by carefully tracking volume growth – because TALKE’s
full-service philosophy also reigns in Logistic Solutions; as a customer, we’ll be at your side from conception to implementation and operation, ensuring
you can work as efficiently as possible.
At TALKE, we’re currently witnessing an exciting period of change
in our customers’ industries.
Structures and processes are being scrutinised,
logistical requirements are becoming more complex
and companies are outsourcing more to
logistics service providers than ever before.
We can play a major role in supporting this change.
With our extensive consulting services and
project management experience, from planning
to turnkey construction, TALKE Logistic Solutions
offers the key to maximum safety, efficiency and
long-term performance in chemical logistics.

TECHNICAL SERVICES
TECHNICAL SERVICES
EQUIPMENT IN
TOP CONDITION
Safety and reliability are TALKE’s top priorities – and can only be assured by use of
modern, safe and well-maintained equipment.
We operate our own repair shops for the maintenance,
repair and modification of transport equipment. Dry
bulk trucks, tankers, containers and IBC are also professionally cleaned at our own tank interior cleaning stations. Our scrupulous cleaning means that faultless and
safe equipment is always ready to be deployed. And this
applies not only to the equipment provided by TALKE
– it goes without saying that we also maintain, repair
and clean customer-owned vehicles as well.
We also have our own rail link at our Hürth headquarters, just 300 metres from the Köln-Eifeltor rail hub
– the largest container handling facility for combined
rail and road transport in Germany. The rail link gives
our Technical Services direct access to the rail network,
allowing us to quickly put equipment back in service after a tune-up. We therefore offer extensive repair and
cleaning services for tank, dry bulk and box containers,
as well as swap bodies and craneable semi-trailers.

enjoy maximum safety thanks to our serviceable equipment.
And thirdly, we also maintain, repair and clean
our customers’ equipment.

Vacuum equipment – rapid assistance for accidental product mixing
After accidents or when storage silos are mistakenly filled with the wrong product, TALKE’s vacuum
dry bulk trucks can put things right – anywhere
throughout Europe and at short notice. Thanks to
our vacuum equipment, we can suction clean a wide
range of of dry bulk products. These dry bulk trailers
equipped with compressors can clean up atomised
materials, granulates, powders and all forms of bulk
materials and spillages. Should the need arise, they
can evacuate product from storage silos, dry bulk
trailers and containers, octabins, and virtually any
other vessel containing non-hazardous materials.
Among other things, this enables us to minimise
damage or loss as a result of products being mixed.
TALKE’s vacuum dry bulk trucks have a capacity
of up to 60 cubic metres and can be deployed anywhere in Europe.

SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY
A SECURE FOUNDATION
FOR HIGH-QUALITY
SERVICE
The quality and reliability of TALKE’s logistics services are built on highest standards and a
steadfast commitment to safety. We believe in a holistic approach with the desire to guarantee
safety for the products entrusted to us by our customers, as well as for people and the
environment.
An important element of this safety is open dialogue
with the authorities. Ongoing exchanges with our business partners in the chemical industry also promote the
continuous transfer of knowledge and experience.
• Learning objectives tests
•An annual safety training plan for each business unit
which is centrally managed by the HSSEQ (Health,
Safety, Security, Environment & Quality) department
BEHAVIOUR-BASED SAFETY
EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS
– TALKE’S HOLISTIC SAFETY PHILOSOPHY
The people at TALKE are our greatest asset – and one of
our most important safety factors. To maintain our high
safety and quality standards in all areas without exception, we continually invest in exceptionally well-trained
employees:
•Employees in Transport and Logistics complete
TALKE training courses alongside their usual
professional qualifications
•On TALKE’s Driver Safety Day, truck drivers learn
both the theory and practice of performing their jobs
responsibly and 100% safely
•In their first few months at the company, new
Logistics employees are allocated a mentor who
teaches them about the most significant technical
and safety-related conditions
•TALKE specialists impart detailed knowledge of
the mechanics and use of equipment to customers’
employees.
Ultimately, it’s the behaviour of each individual that determines safety at work – because safety in the transport
and handling of goods is not simply a technical issue,
but a question of attitude or a “state of mind”. That’s
why TALKE successfully promotes safety-conscious
thinking and behaviour among its employees, according to the principles of behaviour-based safety (BBS).
BBS dictates that anyone in whom safe behaviour has
become ingrained cannot help but act in a safety-conscious manner at all times. All employees call each
other’s attention to safe behaviour at work, while management staff openly express their appreciation of safe
conduct and reinforce this accordingly. This positive dynamic is an intrinsic part of TALKE’s company culture.
The holistic thinking reflected in the BBS approach has
a long-standing tradition at TALKE and has been part of
our TIPS (TALKE’s Intense Personnel Training) safety
training programme for many years now. The training
includes:
• Initial training for every new employee
•Annual safety training for the entire workforce,
including drivers
•Differentiated BBS concepts, i.e. specially adapted
BBS training for employees in Transport (drivers),
Logistics, Repairs, Technical Services, Management
etc.
TECHNICAL SAFETY
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Another pillar of TALKE’s safety philosophy is that of
carefully maintained, top-quality equipment as well as
maximum technical safety at all plants and sites.
General measures
•An emergency plan identifies information and
communication channels in the event of an incident
•All operations are regularly inspected and undergo
emergency drills
•Maintenance and inspections of technical facilities
are prioritised and documented by TALKE’s maintenance planners
Professional environmental protection is part of the
“magic triangle” of economic, environmental and social
sustainability. We continually strive to minimise the
environmental impact of our operations:
•Efficient use of resources – the energy consumption
of our sites and vehicles is constantly measured and
optimised
•We continually work with external partners,
initiatives and associations to identify and
implement other areas of improvement
SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
VEHICLE FLEET
•Modern Mercedes-Benz tractor units are equipped
with the latest electronic safety and assistance
systems
•Regular internal and independent safety inspections
of all our transport equipment are undertaken
LOGISTICS FACILITIES
•Sensors and alarm systems in our warehousing and
handling facilities alert staff to unforeseen situations
•In line with the specific materials being handled,
TALKE’s sites are equipped with smoke and heat
exhaust ventilation systems, gas alarm systems, dry
fire suppression systems, fire-fighting water supply
systems, fire alarm systems, sealed flooring, and
even automatic wastewater analysis
•Drainage shut-off systems prevent materials escaping,
should an incident occur
We also work on our social responsibility and have
created our own charitable foundation to channel our
efforts in this regard. With the LIGHT (Live in Greater Hope for Tomorrow) foundation, we aim to support
deprived children and youth in Germany, Ukraine and
other countries.
We support and encourage our employees’ fitness with
our company health management scheme. At TALKE,
corporate responsibility and safety awareness go hand
in hand.

Cooperation with TÜV Rheinland
TALKE works closely with TÜV Rheinland to objectively
evaluate its high company quality and safety standards.
This expert organisation enjoys an excellent reputation,
demands the same high standards as TALKE, and is
active on all continents in which TALKE operates. We
cooperate with the organisation to improve safety levels
right across the company and to provide greater impetus for our continual improvement process, dubbed
“plan – do – check – act”.
Chemical companies in Germany and abroad benefit
from this cooperation, because TALKE assists customers
around the globe – with TÜV Rheinland as a competent,
independent partner for safety and quality which is
already active in many regions of the world. This allows
us to quickly implement all regional requirements while
striving to meet the highest possible safety standards.
The cooperation ranges from certifications to regular
inspections and expert audits. TALKE also works with
TÜV Rheinland to provide training, to jointly participate
in studies and to share industry knowledge.
People and technology – those are the key pillars
of TALKE’s strong culture of safety.
Safety is not simply a matter of training and practice;
it has to be lived.
Our behaviour-based safety (BBS) programme helps
to make our staff more safety-conscious in their daily work.
In parallel to this, we’re constantly striving
to enhance the technical safety of our operations and
– last, but not least – to anchor this safety in our daily processes

TALKE supports research for
greater safety
Consistently putting safety into practice entails
thinking ahead and constantly evolving. That’s why
TALKE supports a number of research projects.
We are currently involved in IntraSafe with chemical logistics companies, tbm hightech control, and
the Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics
(BIBA). The project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research
(BMBF), is investigating ways to avoid forklift collisions. People, goods and forklifts are now connected
via telematics. In the event of a possible collision, an
assistance system will stop the vehicle.
Blue Rooms – forums for safety and
quality
TALKE’s culture of safety is also promoted in our
communications – with authorities and the public,
with customers and business partners, and of course
with our own workforce. We involve all of our employees as equal partners when discussing and sharing knowledge on safe conduct at work. To support
this, TALKE has introduced the Blue Rooms – meeting places whose walls are typically painted in
TALKE’s signature blue. For employees in Operations, who don’t have their own PC workstations,
the TALKE Blue Rooms are the perfect forum for
communicating and sharing insights on work and
safety. They also provide another platform for employees’ suggestions for improvement. Employees’
suggestions are systematically collected by the
TALKE idea management team and – if fruitful –
integrated into our processes and awarded.
