National Bureau of Investigation Rikskriminalpolisen The National Bureau of Investigation’s mission can be divided into four parts: serious organised crime, MOBILE organised crime, international co-operation and crisis management. Serious organised crime The NBI combats serious organised crime, both at a national and international level. The goal is to minimise opportunities for criminal organisations to operate in Sweden. Serious organised crime is growing steadily and is becoming increasingly international, larger in scale and better organised in nature. In order to combat this threat, the NBI is developing leading expertise, adopting the most modern methodology, and increasing the level of collaboration with other Swedish police and judicial authorities. The NBI conducts its operations through designated project teams and through co-operation with the country’s police authorities. Mobile organised crime Organised gangs are often found behind many so-called ”volume” crimes, such as burglary and crimes against the elderly. Many of them operate locally, whilst others move rapidly between regions and countries. In order to effectively combat this threat, the Swedish police force has formed a National Operational Command Group, led by the NBI, with a designated group of police officers working nationwide. The goal is to create a comprehensive and standardised picture of criminality in Sweden, in order to effectively and efficiently deploy resources where they are needed. International co-operation The NBI is Sweden’s primary point of contact for co-operation with inter national police and other law enforce ment agencies. Work is conducted within established frameworks of Interpol, Europol, SIRENE, the Task Force on Organised Crime in the Baltic Sea Region, and the police and customs co-operation between the Nordic countries. The NBI is also responsible for the police’s peacekeeping operations, where Swedish police participate in missions abroad. Crisis management and unforeseen incidents The NBI is responsible for the management of crises and unforeseen incidents at the national level. When a crisis or such an incident occurs, (such as a natural disaster, a major accident or a terrorist attack) the NBI co-ordinates and heads the police response. The NBI is also responsible for a number of national resources, including the Swedish Police Peace Support Operations, Air Support and the National Communications Centre. The four divisions of the NBI Criminal Intelligence & Investigation Division Kriminalpolisenheten Acquires, processes, and analyses information on serious and organised crime. Operations are focused on narcotics, illegal immigration, human trafficking, money laundering, environmental crimes, child pornography, cyber crimes, homicide investigations and organised crimes. Special Operations Division Ordningspolisenheten This unit consists of Air Support, the Overseas Unit, Peace Support Operations, the National Communications Centre, the Canine Unit Centre, and the Special Task Unit. International Police Co-operation Division Enheten för internationellt polissamarbete A national point of contact for co-operation within Interpol, Europol, Schengen/SIRENE and the Nordic co-operation between the police and customs authorities (PTN). Some national registry functions, such as the criminal offender registry and the vehicle registry are also co-ordinated here. Central Border Management Division Centrala gränskontrollenheten Central Border Management is commissioned with creating, maintaining, and enforcing cohesive and effective border controls and immigration laws in Sweden.
