Writing Effective Skill Statements:







Expresses a specific level of skill on your resume
Shows the employer that you have the skills to fill the role
Begin with a past tense verb
Clearly indicate the skill you are expressing
Add relevant, specific details.
Answer: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How? This helps you show the scope of the skill
Result: Show the results of your actions where ever you can - even if the results are intangible
An acceptable skill statement:
 Conducted training programs for managers
A better skill statement with more detail:
 Conducted communications training programs for managers facilitating internal promotions and
decreasing staff turnover
Example 2: Assisted in company wide HR decisions
The same skill statement with more detail:
 Assisted in company wide HR decisions by consulting with department managers to identify
opportunities to avoid underemployment of staff increasing productivity by 25% in one year
Writing Tips:
 Use a specific example of a skill; choose the example that shows your highest level of skill
 Do not write general statements without a specific example; general statements of skill do not
differentiate you
 skills statements should be about 2 lines long
Three Levels of Statements:
 Level 1: Listing your duties, tasks and responsibilities (not very impressive).
 Level 2: How or in what way do you or did you perform Level #1 exceptionally
well? Are there any additional duties that you initiated that were not part
of your job responsibilities? Employers want to hire individuals with
initiative (more impressive).
 Level 3: Outcome/results of completing Level #1 and Level #2? Did you increase
something good or decrease something bad? Employers want to hire
individuals with knowledgeable skills (most impressive).
Avoid using Level 1 bullets whenever possible. Be able to support all Level 3 bullets with detailed
examples or anecdotes during an interview.
EXAMPLES OF LEVEL THREE BULLETS:
• Earned Associate of the Month honors for outstanding service in June 2007
• Created effective displays which increased monthly sales by 200% in a two-month
period
Conclusion:
 Skills statements are a critical part of the resume
 Work hard on your statements to help the employer recognize your skills and take notice of YOU!
