related courses, a three-yearB.Sc. (Vocational
Biotechnology) program was started from the year
2001 and is currently being conducted by the
department of Biotechnology.

Vocational
Biotechnology
is
an
interdisciplinary course, which encompasses
areas viz. molecular biology,Microbial
genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, plant
and animal tissue culture. It is a fast emerging
science with distinctive advantages as it finds
applications in practically all aspects of life.
The subject offers opportunities in various
fields from basic research to industry-oriented
career.
Keeping in view the expanse and applications
of Biotechnology in every field, there is going
to be a perpetual demand for resource
personnel with Biotechnology specialization.
The Department of Biotechnology has
laboratories well equipped with Biochemistry,
Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Animal tissue
culture andPlant Tissue culture instruments.
Admission procedure for B.Sc. Biotechnology:
 Eligibility: Higher Secondary School Certificate
(10+2) or its equivalent Examination with
English and Biology; and two of the science
subjects such as Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, and Biotechnology.
 Selection will be based on merit
 Intake capacity: 25
 Reservation and relaxation Norms set up by
university/government will be followed for the
admission process.
Departmental library with national and
international editions of books, Computer room
withfree access tointernet facilityfor students.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
Vocational Biotechnology course has additional
basic science subjects like Botany, Zoology and
Chemistry
F.Y. B.Sc.
Theory&Practical: Biochemistry and Microbiology,
Biophysics and Instrumentation, Mathematics,
Statistics and Computers for biologists.
S.Y. B.Sc.
Theory&Practical: Cell and molecular biology,
Microbial genetics, Recombinant DNA technology,
plant tissue culture and animal tissue culture,
Immunology and Medical Microbiology
T.Y. B.SC
Theory&Practical:Microbial Biotechnology and
fermentation, Plant and animal Biotechnology,
Environmental Biotechnology and bioinformatics,
Entrepreneurship development.
SCOPE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Vocational Biotechnology graduates can pursue a
course in ‘Masters in Botany/Chemistry/Zoology’,
which is offered by various Departments of
Fergusson College or other research institutes.
The staff strives to go beyond the prescribed
curriculum to introduce the students to the scope
the subject offers in various fields and to give them
an edge over others in the competitive
environment.
