Background
• The global profit generated through Human Trafficking is
estimated to be $32 billion per year (Belser 2005)
• The Urban Institute in a current study of the Underground
Commercial Sex Economy (ICSE) (March 2014) estimates
that the profit ranges from $39.9 million to $290 million in
seven cities across the US that were studied. These
included - Washington, DC; Dallas, Texas; Kansas City,
Missouri; San Diego, California; Seattle, Washington;
Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia

– While there appears to be no connection between weapons
trafficking and the UCSE. The overlap with drug trafficking varies by
UCSE venue. Currently, gang involvement in sex trafficking and
prostitution seems to be increasing
– Pimps travel in circuits and utilize social networks to facilitate the
transportation of employees to different locations for work.
– Offenders believed that pimping was less risky than other crimes,
including drug trafficking.
– The widespread availability and rapid expansion of the Internet has
redefined the spatial and social limitations of the sex market by
introducing new markets for both recruitment and advertisement.
