TYPES OF AID
Financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and work is available for both direct educational costs (tuition, books, fees) and personal living expenses (food, housing, miscellaneous).
4
APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID
To be considered for federal aid and MSU funds, students must complete the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov
. Funding for many aid programs is limited and awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis; students and their families are encouraged to com plete the FAFSA online as soon as possible after January 1 of their desired year of enrollment. For more information, visit finaid.msu.edu
or contact MSU’s Office of Financial Aid at
517.353.5940.
SCHOLARSHIPS
A variety of scholarship opportunities are available to students.
Scholarship selection criteria vary, but in most instances, no additional applications are required and all admitted students are automatically considered for scholarships.
Students who receive scholarship awards from MSU will be notified by mail. Award letters are sent between December 1 and May 1 for Fall admission and on a rolling basis for students enrolling in Spring and Summer semesters.
In addition to the scholarships awarded by the Office of
Admissions, Michigan State’s searchable scholarship database contains hundreds of scholarships awarded by individual colleges and departments based on academic level or major preference. Browse scholarship opportunities at admissions.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
WITH DISABILITIES
The Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) assists students by maximizing ability and opportunity for full participation at MSU.
If you have a disability that substantially limits a life activity and would like to request a disability-related accommodation to participate in MSU programs, you should register with the
RCPD. Self-identification is voluntary and confidential.
To expedite the accommodation process, please let us know if you have a physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychological disability via secure/confidential web registration at myprofile.
rcpd.msu.edu
. If you encounter problems registering online, call the RCPD office at 517.884.RCPD. Once your request is received, an RCPD specialist will contact you to schedule a confidential assessment of your needs.
Find more information about disability issues at rcpd.msu.edu
.
COMPUTER REQUIREMENT
Michigan State requires all new undergraduate students to have a computer that can connect to the Internet. Visit tech.msu.edu/new-students for more information, including recommendations about software purchases.
CHANGING YOUR MAJOR
Students wishing to change their academic major preference should submit a request through their Be a Spartan online student portal at beaspartan.msu.edu
. Students must submit any major changes at least two weeks prior to their scheduled
AOP session so that the appropriate academic adviser will be available at AOP.
FRESHMAN COMPOSITION CLASS PLACEMENT
Students are placed into a Writing, Rhetoric, and American
Cultures (WRA) course based on their ACT/SAT test scores.
Students wishing to “write out” of their Preparation for College
Writing course have an opportunity to take a placement exam.
For more information visit wrac.msu.edu/first-year-writing .
INCOMING STUDENTS WITH COLLEGE-
LEVEL CREDIT y Send a copy of official score results to the Office of Admissions if you have taken an Advanced Placement (AP), College-
Level Examination Program (CLEP), A-Levels, or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. MSU will NOT award credit without official score results.
y Request that official transcripts be sent to the Office of
Admissions if you have completed or will complete any college course work prior to attending MSU. (Official transcripts must be received at least two weeks prior to your
AOP session.) Notify the Office of Admissions if you are currently enrolled in college courses or anticipate taking college courses prior to your first semester of enrollment at
Michigan State.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
DURING YOUR SENIOR YEAR
OF HIGH SCHOOL IS
IMPORTANT
If you will be a freshman, successful completion of your senior year schedule, as listed on your application, is a condition of your admission to Michigan State. Changes to your senior year class schedule may affect your offer of admission.
All incoming freshmen MUST have their high school submit a final transcript that includes month, day, and year of graduation.
TRANSFERRING CREDITS
Transfer students should utilize the Transfer MSU searchable credit equivalency system at transfer.msu.edu
to identify course credits that may transfer to MSU.
If you are a transfer student, a staff member will be available at your Academic Orientation Program to explain your transfer credits transferred and to answer additional questions. A degree progress report will be prepared for each transfer student attending AOP.
CANCELING YOUR ADMISSION
If you decide you are not going to attend MSU, please use your online student portal at beaspartan.msu.edu to cancel your admission and make space for another student.
PROGRAMS FOR ADMITTED STUDENTS
MSU strongly encourages all admitted students to visit campus to learn about preparing for life as a Spartan. Several visit options are offered throughout the year.

Log in to your online student portal at beaspartan.msu.edu
to locate your Personal
Identification (PID) number and receive your Personal Access Number (PAN).
These numbers are needed to activate your MSU NetID and MSU email account.
STEP 1:
Activate your NetID and email account at tech.msu.edu/new-students . Activation allows you to submit your Advanced Enrollment Deposit (AED), reserve space in an
Academic Orientation Program (AOP), and complete a
Housing Contract.
Once you have established your MSU email account, you should monitor it regularly, as MSU will send important information to this email address.
4
STEP 2:
All students who plan to enroll at MSU must submit the $250
Advanced Enrollment Deposit*. Payments by credit card or electronic check can be made at admissions.msu.edu/aop.asp
.
Submitting your deposit holds your place in the entering class and allows you to register for a required Academic Orientation
Program. Once you have successfully submitted your AED online, you will be able to select a date to attend an AOP.
Please note that AOP dates fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
All new students must attend an Academic Orientation
Program at Michigan State; failure to attend your assigned session may result in a cancellation of your admission.
DEADLINES y Freshmen planning a Fall semester enrollment are encouraged to submit an AED as soon as they have decided to enroll at
MSU, but no later than May 1. The AED is refundable upon written request until May 1. MSU reserves the right to cancel your admission if you do not submit your AED by May 1. y Transfer students planning a Fall semester enrollment and any student planning a Spring or Summer semester enrollment should submit the nonrefundable AED within four weeks of the date of admission.
*If financial circumstances make payment of the AED difficult, contact the Office of
Admissions regarding a possible deferral of your payment.
Please note: The deadline for submitting your AED may change based on factors such as space availability and time of year.
4
STEP 3:
All freshman students must live on campus during their first year at MSU, and many decide to do so for two years or more. Although transfer students who have completed more than 28 credits are not required to live in a residence hall or on-campus apartment, doing so is strongly recommended. Exceptions to MSU’s housing requirements can be found online at liveon.msu.edu/housinghandbook . The process of submitting your AED will determine whether you are required to live on campus.
After you have submitted your
AED, you will complete your Housing Contract and select your preferences and meal plan. To request a room mate, follow the
directions on the
Housing Contract.
If your potential roommate has not yet
received an admission decision, you are still encouraged to submit your AED and Housing Contract as soon as you have decided to enroll, but no later than May 1.
Once you complete your Housing Contract, you will receive information from Residence Education and Housing Services
(REHS) regarding the housing assignment process. All students will have the option to select their own room or be assigned to a room by REHS. More information on the requirements and deadlines will be provided by REHS. Fall semester students will be notified of their housing assignments by early
August; Spring semester students will be notified of their housing assignments by late December.
For more information, visit liveon.msu.edu
or contact Residence Education and Housing Services at 877.9.

STUDENT BACKGROUND AND
EXPERIENCES INVENTORY
All incoming freshman students are required to complete the Student Background and Experiences Inventory
(SBEI) prior to enrolling at MSU. This tool provides MSU with a standardized way to learn more about the background and experiences of incoming students in order to determine resources and support from which they will benefit.
To complete the required SBEI, log in to your online student portal at beaspartan.msu.edu
.
FRESHMAN AND TRANSFER STUDENTS
As a condition of your enrollment at MSU, you must register to attend an Academic Orientation Program. Incoming freshmen are required to attend an overnight AOP; new transfer stu dents must attend a one-day program.
At your required AOP you will meet with an academic adviser, discuss any transfer credits, plan a course schedule, enroll in classes, and receive information on a variety of resources and services available at Michigan State. Because you will meet with an academic adviser during your AOP, you should not seek academic advisement in advance of your AOP date.
Once you are registered for an Academic Orientation Program, you will receive more information about housing, check-in, parking, and activities closer to the date of the program.
Visit orientation.msu.edu
for a tentative schedule of activities and more information, including exemptions to the AOP requirement.
If you have a disability and are preparing to attend AOP, please notify the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities by phone at 517.884.RCPD or send an email to rcpd@msu.edu
.
PARENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM
Parents are encouraged to attend an optional Parent Orienta tion Program (POP), which takes place during a student’s AOP.
At POP, parents learn about the programs and services available at MSU and about how to ease the transition of sending a student to college. Pre-registration is required. For registration and more information, visit orientation.msu.edu
.

TAKING PLACEMENT TESTS
Students enrolling in the Fall should complete all placement exams.
All students enrolling in Spring and
Summer semesters must take any exams prior to attending their AOP.
MATH PLACEMENT TESTING
All students entering MSU as freshmen must take the Math
Placement Exam at math.msu.edu/mps before attending an
Academic Orientation Program so advisers can select math ematics courses that best match student skill levels.
More information about the Math Placement Exam, including exceptions to this policy, can be found in the FAQ section of the Math Placement Exam website at math.msu.edu/mps .
FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TESTING
If you have studied a foreign language and are interested in continuing this course of study (and are not bringing in AP or transferable credit), you need to complete the relevant language test. The test results will determine an appropriate starting level for college language study. It is suggested that students take the placement exam even if they do not plan to immedi ately enroll in foreign language courses.
Foreign language placement tests in French, German, and
Spanish can be accessed at flplacement.cal.msu.edu/about.php.
Information regarding completion times, testing environments, and rules are also available on the website.
More information about online placement tests can be found at admissions.msu.edu/admission/freshmen_placementtests.asp
