EMC SYMMETRIX
VMAX CLOUD EDITION
EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition array is the first enterprise class storage
service delivery platform that provides multi-tenant, automated delivery of levels of
service, with the ease of self-service access.
Specifications
VMAX FOR AS-A-SERVICE DELIVERY
EMC VMAX Cloud Edition array is engineered for service providers and end
customers delivering enterprise class cloud their way. The VMAX Cloud Edition array
lowers operational costs and streamlines the delivery of world-class storage
services through the convenience of a self-service catalog and linearized pricing.
VMAX Cloud Edition array excels at quickly and cost-effectively delivering enterprise
class storage services to power your as-a-service delivery. It combines the power of
EMC VMAX, the simplicity of a self-service portal, RESTful APIs, and the intelligence
of automated provisioning to shrink operational costs and provide tenants with a
broad range of choice in world-class storage services. Trusted multi-tenancy and
built-in chargeback reporting streamline operations and accelerate delivery of
world-class storage services.
VMAX Cloud Edition
ARCHITECTURE SPECIFICATIONS
The VMAX Cloud Edition array combines the EMC Symmetrix VMAX with a multitenant self-service portal and pre-engineered service level definitions. Storage is
provided to create as-a-service delivery from the self-service portal by selecting
from a catalog of pre-engineered service bands for policy based, automated storage
delivery. VMAX Cloud Edition array provides integrated tenant reporting on usage,
utilization, service levels, and trends available from customizable standardized
reports or accessed via REST APIs.
Each VMAX Cloud Edition array ships with a Cloud Edition automation appliance
containing two servers configured as a high availability cluster. Connectivity from
the appliance to the EMC Symmetrix VMAX is via 8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBA.
Connectivity to the EMC Datacenter is via VPN (virtual private network). VMAX
Cloud Edition array also requires a call home line to EMC's Secure Remote Support
Gateway. ESRS Gateway uses FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography. Communications
utilize Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)-256 algorithm and use an RSA digital
certificate key exchange.
SPECIFICATION SHEET
SELF-SERVICE PORTAL SPECIFICATIONS
To support a self-service portal, EMC operates two datacenters, one primary and one
secondary. If the primary data center experiences issues or becomes unavailable,
connectivity is directed to the secondary data center to continue operation. The selfservice portal provides easy access via VPN to provision and manage the preengineered storage bands from the storage services catalog.
DATA AT REST (D@RE) ENCRYPTION
VMAX CLOUD EDITION array offers Data at Rest Encryption with no impact on
performance. Data is encrypted when written to drives and decrypted when read.
VMAX CLOUD EDITION array's D@RE addresses security and compliance concerns
regarding data exposure when drives are removed or replaced.
REPRESENTATIONAL STATE TRANSFER (REST) API
VMAX CLOUD EDITION array offers RESTful API to enable Service Providers to
programmatically integrate VMAX CLOUD EDITION capabilities directly into their own
existing orchestration infrastructure. The APIs exposed are multi-tenant aware
providing access to provisioning, data protection, billing, metering, and reporting
data using either JSON or XML formatting. A dedicated machine at the customer site
connects using HTTPS to the EMC API Server using an EMC issued certificate.
SERVICE CATALOG SPECIFICATIONS
The service catalog is created from pre-engineered service level definitions and
configurations that establish how the VMAX Cloud Edition array is purchased and
how services are provided and consumed by clients. A configuration may consist of
multiple packs on a given service level and multiple service levels in the full solution
of up to 10 VMAX Cloud Edition arrays or up to 5 PB usable.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS:
Total power and environmental requirements are determined through summation of
the Cloud Edition automation appliance and the VMAX Cloud Edition arrays (up to
10) included. Below are the specs for each.
Cloud Edition Automation Appliance
The Cloud Edition automation appliance consists of two 1U servers that are
mountable in a standard 19" rack (Rack not included). This allows for up to 5 PB to
be managed by the Appliance.
Ethernet Connectivity
The VMAX Cloud Edition solution requires the following Ethernet connectivity:
•
4 1Gb/s ports for the dual-server Cloud Edition Automation Appliance
•
1 1Gb/s port on VMAX for ESRS
•
7 IP Addresses within the same VLAN for the Appliance and 1 IP address for the
VMAX Cloud Edition array's ESRS port.
•
VPN connectivity from Ethernet switch
Fibre Channel Ports in the Customer SAN
Both the Cloud Edition automation appliance and each VMAX Cloud Edition array
require connectivity via 8Gb/s FC ports in the customer's SAN:
•
16 to 64 (recommend all ports on all engines e connected) 8Gb/s FC ports for
management and data paths for each VMAX Cloud Edition array
•
4 8Gb/s FC ports for the Management Appliance
VMAX Cloud Edition Arrays
Each VMAX Cloud Edition array consists of service level packs selected. Since the
service level packs can vary, listed below are the values for a fully configured VMAX
Cloud Edition array. Valid configurations will use no more power and cooling than
what is listed. Up to 10 VMAX Cloud Edition arrays can be configured per
Management Appliance. Your actual power and cooling requirements per array will
be less than these specifications unless your VMAX Cloud Edition array is fully
configured.

Number represents the number of ports assigned to the service level band. Internally, each VMAX engine has 16 front end ports.
The ports assigned to a given service level band may and typically do overlap with other service level bands deployed on the same
VMAX engine.

IOPS/GB range has been determined using a 50-50 combination of OLTP with 8KB IO request size and DSS workloads with 64KB IO
request size. It further takes into account resource limitations of the Service Level pack selected, i.e. VMAX engine(s) and disk
drives. These values are common-use targets and not guarantees of realized performance. The workload presented by your mix of
applications will likely vary from the tested workload resulting in somewhat different IOPS/GB.
