When people say Pilsen most people imagine beer.
In the city of Pilsen a legend of Pilsner Urquell was
born more than 170 years ago. It is a bottom fermented lager and its taste is known world-wide. It
has been brewed here ever since and you can reveal
the secret of its production directly in the famous
brewery. The brewery offers wide range of experience programmes, commented tours of both historical and recent production places.
Nevertheless, in Pilsen you can taste much more.
The historical city centre offers a number of gems
which remind their visitors of the rich history of the
city. It has its beginning in 1295 when a royal town
was established on the junction of four rivers. The
position was advantageous due to the crossroads of
business roads and it brought considerable wealth
to the city and its population. Business and art
prospered significantly. At the time of the industrial
revolution in the 19th century the well-known industrial giants were founded in the city
of Pilsen – machine works Škoda and the already mentioned Pilsner Urquell Brewery. The
industrial character of the city has been kept up to the present day.
High level of cultural and social life in the city was also reflected in its characteristic constructional development. On the Republic Square and in its surroundings there are many
sightseeing places worth visiting, for example the St Bartholomew‘s Cathedral with its
highest church tower in the Czech Republic, the Renaissance City Hall, the labyrinth of
underground corridors, the unique Great Synagogue or Franciscan Monastery. The city
centre is surrounded by parks and alleys full of trees and flowers where you can enjoy relaxing in some of many cafes and restaurants while watching a performance of the common
open-air production. In Pilsen you experience lively atmosphere of the city which became
the European Capital of Culture 2015. The offer of cultural programme is very rich and

relaxation.

Pilsen offers interesting programme for children of all age groups
Apart from the ZOO and the DinoPark, families as well as school classes may visit the
Techmania Science Centre featuring the 3D planetarium regardless the weather conditions. Non-traditional exhibitions can be also visited in the Puppet Museum and the
Museum of Ghosts and Fairy Tales.

Prague
The journey from Munich to Pilsen takes 3 hours on a highway, the journey from
Nuremberg takes two hours which makes the West-Bohemian metropolis metropolis

Guided-tours of historic city centre in six languages
Visitors will see the Republic Square and the Gothic St Bartholomew´s Cathedral with the highest church tower in the
Czech Republic, the Renaissance building of City Hall and various historic houses, the green belt of gardens and parks
with interesting monuments, ruins of medieval ramparts, Franciscan Monastery, the fourth largest synagogue in the world and other important buildings. They will get familiar with interesting parts of the history and present curiosities about

New part in the Pilsen touristic offer, the guided tours of Loos interiors enable visit of the original city apartment interiors designed by the world-famous architect Adolf Loss in the 1930s. In addition to the unique first-republic design it opens

In the year 2015, when it becomes the European Capital of Culture, Pilsen is going to offer more than 50 major cultural
events and over 600 other diverse performances varying from classic theatre and music concerts, over dance and new
circus presentations and state-of-art multimedia projects. The majority of the events will take place in public areas.
The wide range offers a perfect opportunity to experience beautiful spots of West Bohemian metropolis and enjoy

Le Manège Carré Senart
Pilsen´s transformation into the cultural metropolis starts in autumn of 2014.
One of the biggest carousels enjoyed by both children and adults will be set
up on the central Republic Square. After Madrid, Paris or Antwerp, Pilsen is
going to be the seventh place where the magical manage of French artists
François Delarozière will be presented.

The Opening Ceremony of the City
For the coronation ceremony of Pilsen as the European Capital of Culture,
the organizers are planning an outstanding opening ceremony in public
area. The main attraction of the evening full of music, images, excitement
and emotions will be a unique performance of world-famous tightrope
walker David Dimitri. The celebrations will consequently spread from the
central square to the whole city.
January – November 2015
Le Cirque Nouveau Season
New circus is accompanying the whole programme of the year 201. The
world´s leading new circus ensembles will present their art one by one. Pilsen
will host top performers and acrobats from France, Italy, Spain, Canada and
Switzerland. Each of nine ensembles will perform several times to satisfy the
audience. During summer, there will be “Circus Fair” travelling around the city.

Bavarian Cultural Days
The week-lasting festival will offer a display of Czech-Bavarian cooperation in the field of culture throughout the genres which will culminate
by a Great Sunday celebration of culture called “Flowers of Pilsen”.
1st – 6th May 2015
Liberation Festival
The spectacular celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Pilsen´s liberation by the US army will offer a remarkable atmosphere of the tradition
when locals together with American and Belgian veterans commemorate the events of the end of the Second World War in May 1945. A huge
part of the city centre will become a historical military camp-site. Pilsen will be flooded by military vehicles. The celebrations will be supplemented
by a rich cultural programme. Lynyr Skynyrd, a famous American band, will play in Pilsen on 1st May 2015.
29th June – 30th August 2015
9 Weeks of Baroque
Nine venues with a spectacular Baroque architecture will be revived by concerts, theatre and fine art for 9 weeks. During the period, the
unique cultural heritage of Pilsen region will attract visitors by more than usual guided tours may offer.

Royal de Luxe
Giant, several meters tall mechanical marionettes of French street theatre company Royal de Luxe will perform in the East of Berlin for the
first time. Visitors of Pilsen will have a chance to meet the one-of-its-kind gigantic pieces of art in the streets of the city centre.
European Theatre and Dance Season
As a part of the European Capital of Culture project, several top dance ensembles will perform in Pilsen such as a group of five Slovakian
dancers Les Slovaks accompanied by the Pilsen Philharmonic or ballet solo-dancers Jiří and Otto Bubeníčeks, representing the dance of
the world´s best quality. An original Czech – French coproduction of visual performance Aladin will be brought to Pilsen by Matěj Forman.

Unique exhibitionsof the Pilsen – European
Capital of Culture 2015 programme
Munich: The Shining Metropolis of Art (28th January – 5th April 2015)
The significant collection of works painted by the artists of the famous Munich School and Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) avant-garde artistic movement will present the best pieces of modernism and Munich fin de siècle of Villa Stuck and the Lenbachhaus Gallery in the Wet
Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen.
Jiří Trnka Studio (17th January – 10th May 2015)
The very first profile exhibition of the work of Pilsen – born, world-famous puppetmaker and artist Jiří Trnka. The exhibition Jiří Trnka Studio is being prepared by the
Pilsen Municipal Gallery. A family collection of drawings, sculptures, puppets and
dioramas will be completed by artefacts provided by the National Gallery and other
partners.
Trnka´s Garden 2 (26th February – 24th May 2015)
An interactive exposition encompassing the form of art exhibition, theatre and
animated film will drag visitors into the plot of Jiří Trnka’s book for children called
“The Garden”.
Gottfried Lindauer (5th May – 20th September 2015)
The invaluable colletion of 40 Maori portraits by a Pilsen-born artist
Gottfried Lidnauaer is considered to be a national treasure by the New Zealand
inhabitants.
Ladislav Sutnar (all the 2015 round)
A series of exhibitions of Pilsen-born designer Ladislav Sutnar will introduce the
work of world-recognized founder of modern design in a wider context.
The Baroque in West Bohemia
(27th October 2015 – 13th March 2016)
This unique exhibition in the West Bohemian Gallery is devoted to the Baroque art,
history and cultural heritage of the Pilsen region.

Live music in Pilsner pubs and bars
As a part of the European Capital of Culture programme, live music will play in chosen pubs and bars in Pilsen from Wednesday to Sunday.

Adolf Loos interiors in Pilsen
Adolf Loos is an important personality of the modern architecture of 20th century who designed more than a dozen of apartment interiors
in Pilsen. Comparing the number of Loos realizations, Pilsen could even compete with Vienna. In 2015 a unique guided tour including
minimally two renewed and furnished interiors will open to the public.
Art in public space
It doesn’t matter it is spring, summer, autumn or winter, in 2015 you will meet art everywhere. In public space, parks and gardens you will
see wall paintings, art installation and multimedia project. The banks of one of 4 rivers in Pilsen will come to life, as well as some other
place where you would not expect any cultural event to be happening.

Smetana Days (2nd – 29th March 2015)
The festival which primarily focuses on classical music offers a wide range of concerts of various music styles.
Finále Plzeň (26th April – 2nd May 2015)
The Finále Plzeň film festival is an annual retrospective of Czech cinematography and a competition of Czech and Slovakian feature-length
live-action or animated films, documentaries and TV formats.
Liberation Festival (1st – 6th May 2015)
The traditional celebration of the liberation of Pilsen by the US army in May 1945 which takes place every year has a lot to offer, including meetings with Second World War veterans, memorial acts, the convoy of historical military vehicles and rich cultural and military
programmes.
International Folklore Festival CIOFF (3rd – 7th June 2015)
Czech and international folklore groups play music and dance in the city centre.
History Weekend (12th – 14th June 2015)
The city centre will change into a traditional draft fair which is crowded by swordsmen, jugglers and other artists. An evening parade of
ghosts and fairy tale characters is also a part of the event.
Vivid Street (July – August 2015)
During the summer months the city centre comes alive with multi-genre festival which offers concerts, theatre performances and various
events for the whole family.
Pilsner Fest (3rd October 2015)
The traditional celebration of beer annually attracts tens of thousands of visitors by more than its rich music programme into the facilities
of Pilsner Urquell Brewery.
Jazz Without Borders (October – December 2015)
The international music project JAZZ WITHOUT BORDERS belongs to the traditional events in the city.Amateur and professional jazz bands
and musiciansfrom the Czech and German region as well as the world´s top artists participate. The main part of the festival full of concerts
and events is concentrated into several days at the end of October and beginning of November but various jazz concerts may take place
freely all year round.
Christmas Fair (Advent season 2014 and 2015)
In the Advent period, the central Republic Square changes into the traditional Christmas fair scented by the smell of mulled wine and
diverse food.
