As I live in the UK but spend a lot of time in the US, I feel an affinity with both the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes. However, I have included the Greek flag, too, as a reminder of a wonderful recent vacation in Corfu. Each flag uses only scraps of the different yarn colors, plus one bamboo knitting needle to make an ideal flag pole. size Approximately 6¼in x 4in materials Debbie Bliss Rialto 4-ply (100% extra-fine merino wool, approx 110 yd per 1¾oz/50g ball) One ball in each color (or leftover yarns) as follows: US red (A), white (B), and blue (C) UK red (A), white (B), and blue (C) Greece pale blue (A) and white (B) Pair of size 3 knitting needles Small amount of cotton fabric for backing One size 8 bamboo knitting needle for each flag (for display) gauge 28 sts and 38 rows to 4in square over St st using size 3 needles. to make With size 3 needles, cast on 47 sts for US and Greek flags and 46 sts for UK flag. Cut a piece of backing fabric slightly larger than the flag. With right sides together, lay the flag on the backing fabric and pin in place. Handstitch the backing to the flag around the two long sides and the short side without the selvage stitches. Trim away the excess fabric around the stitched edges. Turn right-side out and press. Fold the backing fabric to the inside along the open edge, leaving the selvage stitches free, then slipstitch the backing fabric in place along the fold. Fold the selvage stitches of the flag onto the back of the flag and slipstitch to the backing, leaving both ends open, so forming a channel for the flag pole. Insert the bamboo needle into the channel. abbreviations See page 10. note Each flag is worked from a chart using the relevant colors (see pages 80 and 81). 78 copyright Debbie Bliss and Trafalgar Square Books www.TrafalgarBooks.com DUPLICATION PROHIBITED by copyright holder summer chart 1 (us) summer chart 3 (greece) key a pale blue b white selvage sts selvage sts key a red b white c blue d white (duplicate stitch) chart 2 (uk) 80 selvage sts key a red b white c blue copyright Debbie Bliss and Trafalgar Square Books www.TrafalgarBooks.com 81
