About this site
Open menu
This new website reflects a commitment to openly available knowledge, multimedia content and free software. We hope that
together these elements will offer a clearer view of what the UPC is today. The goal is to facilitate access to information and
knowledge via an easy-to-navigate site and spark the interest of visitors. We want people to know how we work—to see for
themselves the evidence of our high standards, hard work, dynamism, innovation, international outreach, development
cooperation, and commitment to sustainability. The communication model evident on our home page will shape your experience
from the moment you start exploring our new site. The model is based on three key principles:
Access to information via four major portals that remain accessible as you navigate around the site: the UPC, Learning,
Research and Community.
Engaging audiovisual content that invites you to get to know some of the protagonists of the UPC: the people and the
innovative projects they’re working on.
Open access to knowledge generated by the University is the third principle that underpins the communication model we’ve
chosen for the site. This principle is reflected in sections like the UPC.TV
(which features videos related to study
programmes, teaching and science communication) and UPCommons
(a portal that provides open access to the scientific
output and knowledge generated at the UPC)
The home page continues to display UPC news
and provide access to the press file. If you have any specific questions about this site, please contact the webmaster (info.web@(upc.edu)).

Bachelor's degree courses
FAQs about first- and second-cycle courses
What is a bachelor's degree course?
It is a course offering general training geared towards preparing students to exercise specific professions and leading to the title of
graduate. It consists of 240 credits: 60 per year for 4 years.
What are graduates called under the new system?
Graduate in (X) from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
What core training is provided in the engineering programmes?
The common part of these programmes is completed at the start of the course and will consist of at least 60 credits, of which at
least 36 will be related to the specific branch of knowledge of the degree. However, according to the UPC framework for bachelor's
degree courses, the first and second years (120 ECTS credits) of courses belonging to the same branch of knowledge (e.g.
industrial engineering) will be the same.
What is an ECTS credit?
It is the measurement unit used to design qualifications within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It
is calculated based on the work required of the student (class and practical hours, studying, preparation and sitting of
examinations, etc.). At the UPC, one ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours, or, exceptionally, up to 30 hours for external work
placement and the bachelor's thesis.
What is the learning method like?
The system is student-centred. Courses are designed based on the skills to be acquired by the student. Consequently, in
addition to class hours, they take student effort into account. The goal is for students to acquire the skills they need to continue
to learn independently, think creatively and engage in interdisciplinary problem-solving once they graduate.
Under the new model, teaching is structured around the student's learning process. The curricula are based on the skills and
abilities to be acquired by the student, which is why student effort, in addition to class hours, is taken into account.
What is meant by competencies?
The set of skills, abilities and attitudes that constitute the desired learning outcome of a given course. In other words, it refers
to everything that a student will know or be able to demonstrate upon completion of the educational process.
What are generic or transversals competencies?
Transversals competencies are those things that the graduate will be able to understand or do upon completion of the learning
process, regardless of the specific course. The transversals competencies established by the UPC are: capacity for innovation
and entrepreneurship, sustainability and social commitment, effective oral and written communication, knowledge of a foreign
language (preferably English), teamwork, independent learning and proper use of information resources.
What are specific competencies?
Specific competencies are those skills that a graduate will have acquired upon completion of a given course, and they are
specifically defined for each qualification. They can be broken down into discipline-specific, academic and professional
competencies.
Is knowledge of a foreign language required?
According to the UPC framework for bachelor's degree courses, students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language,
preferably English, in order to graduate. The curriculum for each course will specify the mechanisms to be used to achieve this
skill.
Enrolment
Once I've being admitted to a course at the UPC, can I enrol in whatever I want?
NO. If you are enrolling for the first time in the first year of a bachelor's degree course as a full-time student, you must
enrol in 30 credits if the enrolment is semester-based or 60 credits if it is annual. However, the section on minimum academic
progress requirements of the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC provides that part-time students
may enrol in a maximum of 36 ECTS credits per academic year (18 per semester). No justification is required to enrol as a parttime student. You must simply indicate this choice on the enrolment application form when processing your first enrolment. All
subsequent enrolments will also be considered part-time, unless you request a change and your request is approved.
If you are enrolling in a course for the first time and are not enrolling in the first year thereof, you must enrol in at least 12
credits your first academic year.
If you are still completing the initial stage (the 60 ECTS credits of the first academic year of the course), remember that, as a
general rule, you may not enrol for compulsory or optional courses from other curricular areas until you have passed the minimum
number of initial-stage credits established by the school for minimum academic progress (see Section 5.5 of the Academic
Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC ).
Can I change my enrolment if I realise I've chosen the wrong subjects?
Your enrolmen may only be changed if the school makes changes to the examination times or dates after you have
processed it and these changes prevent you from attending class or being assessed on a given subject.
Your school will set a deadline for each teaching period for enrolment modification requests, which will be decided by the director
or dean.
Can I cancel my enrolment?
As a general rule, no. However, if you are a new first-year student, you may, in duly justified cases and a single time, ask the
director or dean of the school for permission to cancel your full enrolment, providing you do so within two months of the start of
the teaching activities, regardless of the date on which you processed the enrolment itself.
If you cancel the enrolment and do not request that your place be reserved, you will need to pre-enrol again, pursuant to the
current rules for admission to the course in question, should you later decide to re-enrol.
Cancellation of the enrolment will only entitle you to a refund of the public fee paid in those cases recognised under the UPC
budget (see Section 2.10 of the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC ).
What can I do if I have been admitted to the UPC but cannot begin the course?
When you have been assigned a place and, for an exceptional reason, are unable to begin the course, you may ask your school to
reserve your place within the established enrolment period.
If your request is approved, your enrolment will be processed for the purposes of opening a record, and you will be considered a
UPC student for all intents and purposes.
Places may be reserved for a maximum of two semesters or one academic year. Only in cases of justified serious illness or
accident may this period be extended.
If your request is denied, or if you fail to submit it in time, you will lose the assigned place and will have to be re-admitted
through the pre-enrolment process, pursuant to the current rules for admission to the course in question, in order to re-enrol.
If your request is denied, or if you fail to submit it in time, you will lose the assigned place and will have to be re-admitted
through the pre-enrolment process, pursuant to the current rules for admission to the course in question, in order to re-enrol.
Who decides how much a course costs?
Each year, the Department of the Presidency of the Government of Catalonia publishes a decree in the Official Gazette of the
Catalan Government establishing the fees for the provision of academic services at public universities with regard to homologated
qualifications. These fees vary depending on how experimental the qualification is. This decree also establishes the fees for
other university services, such as the issue of transcripts, enrolment and academic record charges, or the issue of degrees. These
fees cover about 15% of the real cost of the qualification, as they apply to homologated and, thus, subsidised, courses. You can
view the full text of the Decree on Public Fees at: http://www.upc.edu/sga/matricula/pagament-de-la-matricula/decret-de-preus(in Catalan and Spanish).

Assessment
How is assessment performed within the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA)
framework?
Integration in the EHEA entails significant changes in the teaching structure and methods, learning process and assessment
system. Under the European credit system, student work is used to gauge academic activity, and curricular objectives must
be precisely defined, as must how each subject contributes towards achieving them.
What are the curricula like?
The primary objective of the curricula is the acquisition of skills. Therefore, the subjects are defined based on the skills that
students are expected to have mastered by the time they complete their studies. These skills must be assessable and are reflected
in the student's marks.
Generic skills are those skills that are not oriented towards the practice of a specific professional function or task, but rather are
useful in most professions and can be applied to a variety of situations (communication, problem-solving, reasoning, leadership
ability, creativity, motivation, teamwork and, especially, the capacity to learn). Specific skills are skills that a university graduate
can be expected to have mastered and are deployed on three levels: core instrumental skills, which are of an essentially scientific
nature and are shared by all areas of knowledge; skills related to the cross-disciplinary scientific and technological foundations of a
given field; and the applied technical skills pertaining to the specific qualification.
What levels of assessment are carried out at the UPC?
Assessment is performed at different levels:
Assessment of the individual compulsory and optional subjects included in a curriculum.
Assessment of the curricular areas. Curricular areas consist of a set of subjects with the same learning objectives that are
assessed as a whole through a procedure known as curricular assessment. The specific school offering the course is responsible
for the curricular assessment. The curricula for all UPC bachelor's degree courses must define at least two curricular areas: an
initial stage, consisting of the 60 ECTS credits that make up the first year of the curriculum; and the rest of the subjects in the
curriculum, which may include the bachelor's thesis. The bachelor's thesis is a compulsory subject that must be worth at least 12
and at most 30 ECTS credits. For degrees linked to regulated professions, the bachelor's thesis must be worth at least 24 ECTS
credits.
Assessment of any additional academic activities that may be recognised for credit.
What rights do I have with regard to assessment?
You are entitled to be assessed on any subject in which you enrol; however, if you choose subjects with conflicting schedules, you
are not entitled to be assessed on any date other than the one originally stipulated. If, for an exceptional and duly justified
reason, you are unable to attend an examination, the school will review the specific circumstances of your case and, where
applicable, take the necessary steps to allow you to sit the examination during the teaching period.
If you do not participate in any of the assessment activities for a subject, or do not participate in a sufficient number of them in
the opinion of the responsible lecturer, you will receive the mark of ;Absent;.
You are entitled to know, at the start of the year, the assessment criteria and marking method approved by the school for each
subject, neither of which may be modified in any way during the academic year.
What rights do I have with regard to the review of assessment results?
You are entitled to request a review of the results of any official assessment within the period previously established for this
purpose by your school. You are likewise entitled to request a review of the recognition of credits within a maximum period of
seven days from the date the original decision is published.
You are further entitled to receive a decision on any appeal you might file against the decisions of the lecturer for a disputed
subject within a maximum period of fifteen days of the filing date. Under no circumstances may a review result in a lower mark
than that originally obtained.
If you appeal a decision and the appeal is decided in your favour, you will be entitled to enrol after the decision is handed
down, even when this means enrolling past the official deadline.
In addition to the review process, and for the purpose of academic guidance, you are also entitled to receive from the lecturer for
a given subject both an assessment of your work on any activity subject to assessment and an explanation of the mark awarded.
You may contest the decisions of the director or dean by filing an appeal with the rector within a maximum period of one month
from receipt of the decision in question.
What is a curricular assessment? Who carries it out and when?
Curricular assessment offers an overall assessment of your performance in all of the subjects included in a given curricular
area. Please see the course guide to determine which curricular areas are included in your course.
Each school establishes the mechanisms to be used for curricular assessment, and these mechanisms must be published. The
assessment is conducted by a specific assessment committee, which, for the assessment of the initial stage, will include, at least,
both lecturers and students who have already successfully completed the stage in question.
You will be assessed on each curricular area once you have been assessed on each of the component subjects thereof. In the initial
stage, when the minimum academic performance established by the school is the 60 ECTS credits that comprise the stage, you will
also be subject to a curricular assessment once the deadline for the successful completion of those credits has passed, whether or
not you have already been assessed on each individual subject. The curricular assessment of the initial stage is separate from any
marks you may earn for subjects belonging to curricular areas other than those in which you have been authorised to enrol.
Where is the result of the curricular assessment recorded?
On the official curricular assessment results. These results are prepared and communicated to all students subject to
curricular assessment. For students who successfully pass the curricular assessment, provided they have earned a numerical mark
of 5.0 or higher in each of the subjects, the results will include the final numerical and descriptive mark for each subject and the
numerical mark for the curricular area as a whole, which will be the average mark for all the subjects weighted by the number of
credits. Students who fail the curricular assessment will receive a mark of Pending and no numerical mark will be given.
How is the area comprising the initial stage assessed?
If you pass the initial stage, the official curricular assessment results will include all the information mentioned in the
previous section.
If you do not pass it but have not yet exceeded the deadline for doing so, you will receive a mark of Pending and no numerical
mark will be given. This means that you will need to be re-assessed in the area comprising the initial stage at the end of the
next teaching period.
If you do not pass it and have reached the deadline for doing so, the report will list the individual subjects passed and you will
receive a mark of ;Fail; for the initial stage.
For more information about your options for continuing your studies in these circumstances, see the section on minimum
academic progress requirements of the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC .
How is each individual subject assessed?
If you pass the subject, the assessment report will include the final descriptive and numerical marks obtained
(Outstanding/Very Good: 9.0–10; Good: 7.0–8.9, Satisfactory: 5.0–6.9. If you do not pass it, you will receive a mark of
Unsatisfactory (0–4.9).
If you do not participate in any of the assessment activities for the subject, or do not participate in a sufficient number of them in
the opinion of the responsible lecturer, you will receive the mark of ;Absent;.
What happens if I fail a subject with a numerical mark of 4 or higher?
You can choose whether or not to re-enrol in subjects that you fail with a numerical mark of 4.0 or higher, as they will be
included in the curricular assessment process. Under that process, the mark may be changed to Satisfactory or maintained as
Unsatisfactory.
If you decide to re-enrol in a subject for which you were already assessed in a previous academic period and for which you
received a mark of Unsatisfactory with a numerical mark of 4.0 or higher (provided it was on the last assessment of the subject),
that mark will continue to be listed on future official results unless you earn a higher one, in which case, the higher mark
will be used.
Can I withdraw from the curricular assessment?
If you do not want the curricular assessment criteria to be applied to you, whether in a given period or for a specific curricular
area, you may request a withdrawal at the school where you are taking the course within the established period. In both cases,
you will have to re-enrol in any subject you have failed.
For more information on the assessment process at the UPC, see Section 4 of the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree
Courses at the UPC .
Minimum academic progress requirements
Can I be enrolled at the UPC for as many years as I like?
It depends on your academic performance. In order to ensure the best use of resources, the UPC has established, in the
section on minimum academic progress requirements of the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC ,
three assessment-based mechanisms for monitoring academic performance: the minimum number of credits to be passed the
first academic year of a course; the minimum number of credits to be passed in the initial stage (i.e. the 60 ECTS credits of the
first academic year of a course), which is established by each school; and the minimum academic progress requirements following
completion of the minimum number of initial-stage credits, which is determined using the academic performance parameter.
How will I know whether or not I've met the minimum academic progress requirements?
The school will tell you before the next enrolment period whether or not you have met the requirement to pass at least 12
credits the first academic year (;a mark of Fail for the first academic year;) or the minimum academic progress
requirements for the initial stage. Each school establishes the minimum number of credits to be passed, which ranges from 42
to 60 ECTS credits from the initial stage. You must pass these credits within a maximum period of two academic years if you are
enrolled as a full-time student or four academic years if you are enrolled as a part-time student.
Once you have met the minimum academic progress requirements for the initial stage, the school will tell you whether you have
achieved an academic performance parameter of less than 0.5 for a maximum of two consecutive teaching periods (that is,
whether you failed to pass 50% of the credits for which you were enrolled in the teaching period), as well as the measures to be
taken, if any, as a result during the next enrolment period (e.g. limiting the total number of credits for which you may enrol). Any
student with an academic performance parameter of less than 0.3 for three consecutive teaching periods (when the periods are
semesters) or two consecutive teaching periods (when they are annual) may be automatically dismissed from the course.
For more information, see Section 5.8 on minimum academic progress requirements in the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's
Degree Courses at the UPC.Normativa Académica de los estudios de grado de la UPC
.
Do all credits count for the purposes of calculating the academic performance parameter and
the 12 credits that must be passed the first year of a course?
No. Validated and recognised credits are not included in the calculation.
What happens if I do not pass 12 credits the first year?
The assessment committee will assign you a mark of ;Fail; for the first academic year. You will have a period to appeal this
decision and, if the appeal is decided in your favour, that is, if it is determined that you have passed more than 12 credits, you will
be able to continue with your studies normally.
If the fail mark is upheld and you believe that your case qualifies for the exception provided for in Section 5.7 on minimum
academic progress requirements in the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC
, you may file an appeal
with the director or dean of your school, attaching any documentary evidence, by the deadline established in the general calendar.
What if I do not meet the minimum academic progress requirements for the initial stage?
The assessment committee will assign you the mark of ;Fail;. As in the previous case, you will have a period to appeal the
decision and, if the appeal is decided in your favour, that is, if it is determined that you have met the minimum academic
progress requirements for the initial stage, you will be able to continue with your studies normally.
What if I would like to re-enrol in the same course or enrol in another one?
If you fail to meet the minimum academic progress requirements for the initial stage or to pass at least 12 credits the first
academic year, you will not be allowed to continue on the course at the same school. You may re-enrol in the course
at another UPC school or enrol in any other UPC course that does not have the same initial stage as the course from
which you have been dismissed.
Important: To enrol in the new course, you must be assigned a place in the pre-enrolment process through the Catalan University
Admissions Advisory Office or according to the admission rules in force for the course in question. To re-enrol in a course from
which you have been dismissed or enrol in a different course with the same initial stage, you must wait two years from the time of
your expulsion. You must moreover obtain prior authorisation from the rector and be assigned a place by the Catalan University
Admissions Advisory Office in accordance with the admission rules in force for the course in question.
What if I do not agree?
If you disagree with the way that the Academic Regulations for Bachelor's Degree Courses at the UPC
have been applied in your
case, or if you believe that you have not been given a fair hearing, you may contact the University Ombudsman at:
Til·lers Building, C. Jordi Girona, 31, 08034 Barcelona.

What is an ECTS credit?
ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System, the standard adopted by all universities in the European Higher Education
Area (EHEA) to ensure the homogeneity and quality of the courses they offer.
Under the current model, a credit is equal to 10 class hours, whereas an ECTS credit takes into account, in addition to actual
class time, all the other activities carried out during a student's learning process (studying, assignments, practical work, etc.).
What is meant by competencies?
The set of skills, abilities and attitudes that constitute the desired learning outcome of a given course. In other words, it refers
to everything that a student will know or be able to demonstrate upon completion of the educational process.
What transverals competencies?
Transverals competencies are those things that the graduate will be able to understand or do upon completion of the learning
process, regardless of the specific course. The tranversals competencies established by the UPC are: capacity for innovation
and entrepreneurship, sustainability and social commitment, knowledge of a foreign language (preferably English), teamwork and
proper use of information resources.
What are specific competencies?
Specific competencies are those skills that a graduate will have acquired upon completion of a given course, and they are
specifically defined for each qualification. They can be broken down into discipline-specific, academic and professional
competencies.
How long does a master's degree course last?
One academic year (two semesters spanning the period from September to July) is equivalent to 60 ECTS credits, which is the
maximum number of credits a full-time student can complete per year.
A master's degree course has a study load of between 60 and 120 ECTS credits. Therefore, a full-time student will need
between one and two academic years to complete the course, depending on the specific course and his or her academic
background.
How much does a master's degree course cost?
The fee for a master's degree course, like any other official university course, is determined by the Government of Catalonia,
subject to certain limits set for all Spain. The fee per ECTS credit for the 2012–2013 academic year .. For non-resident
students who are not EU nationals, the fee per credit is 1,5 the amount .
What financial aid is available for master's degree students?
Training grants for research staff
Training grants for university faculty
Training grants for researchers
Alban scholarships
Student mobility grants within the framework of a master's degree programme
Grants from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID from the Spanish)
More information about grants and scholarships can be found on the Academic Management Service's website
.
How can I have my previous studies recognised?
The body responsible for the master's degree will process, on behalf of the rector, all applications for recognition.
You must submit the application form (model form) to the unit responsible for the course, along with the following
documentation:
- Personal transcript (original or certified photocopy) listing the courses to be recognised (only for courses taken at institutions
other than the UPC).
- The curriculum for the completed course, including detailed information about the content of each subject, as published by
the corresponding school (only for courses taken at institutions other than the UPC).
- Proof of payment of the recognition fee.
What is an Erasmus Mundus master's degree?
Erasmus Mundus is a European Union programme launched in 2003 to improve the quality of European higher education and
cooperation with other regions with a view to attracting highly qualified students from third countries to courses offered jointly
by European universities so as to strengthen the ties between these universities and similar institutions around the world.
Erasmus Mundus programme
What is the minimum number of students required for a master's degree course to be taught?
According to the criteria set forth by the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, at least 20 students must have enrolled by the
end of the enrolment period for a master's degree course to be taught. If this number is not reached, there is no guarantee
that the course will be offered. If a master's degree course is cancelled for this reason, the enrolment fee will be refunded
and the affected students will be offered places in other master's degree courses.

Admission from a CFGS + validations
Holders of a CFGS qualification may apply to any bachelor's degree course . However, for the purposes of admission,
preference will be given to holders of CFGS qualifications in the same or equivalent fields to the bachelor's degree course in
question. The UPC validates subjects and credits for some bachelor's degree courses for graduates of certain CFGSs. See the
section on credit validation to see which CFGS subjects qualify for validation. Holders of a CFGS qualification may voluntarily
sit the specific part of the PAU if they would like to improve their university entrance mark. Additional information is available
in the weighting table .
Admission for students over 25, 40 and over 45
Admission for students over 25
Admission for students over 40. Royal Decree 1892/2008, of 14 November, regulating the conditions for admission to official
bachelor's degree courses, establishes a special means of admission to these courses for candidates over the age of 40. For
more information, see the section on university admission on the website of the Catalan Ministry of Economy and Knowledge.
The results of the admissions process for these candidates are published on the Catalan version of the UPC website.
Admission for students over 45
Admission of students from EU countries and countries with reciprocity agreements
Students from the education systems of EU member states or any other country that has signed a reciprocity agreement with
Spain may apply for admission directly, without the need to sit the PAU, provided they meet the academic requirements in
force in their own education systems to attend university. These students must have adequate knowledge of the language in
which the courses will be taught. The Spanish National Distance Education University (UNED) is responsible for verifying these
admission requirements. Candidates must submit their applications and related documentation at: www.uned.es/accesoUE .
They must then apply for a place at the university offering the course in which they wish to enrol via the pre-enrolment
process.
Admission of other foreign students
Students who have completed upper secondary school in a foreign country must contact the Spanish Ministry of Education and
Science or its office in Barcelona to request the homologation (official recognition in Spain) of their qualification. All requisite
documentation must be legalised and, where applicable, translated. Once the qualification has been homologated, the student
must pass the PAU. For more information, see the section on admission universities in the website StudyinCatalonia.
University entrance examinations (PAU)
See the Catalan Ministry of Economy and Knowledge
website for detailed information about the structure of the
examinations, admission marks, subjects tested and weightings.
The subject weightings
were approved by the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia on 10 June 2009. The resolution is
provisional and applies only to the 2010 and 2011 pre-enrolment processes. During this period, the list of subjects for each
batxillerat option associated with each branch of knowledge at the university level will be used to assign a weighting of 0.2 to
those subjects that were previously subject to a mandatory examination. A revised weighting table reflecting the academic
recommendations of the universities will be published for the 2012 pre-enrolment process.
Common admission procedure
A single pre-enrolment process is used for all available places in courses in the field of industrial engineering offered by the
Terrassa School of Engineering (EET), the Vilanova i la Geltrú School of Engineering (EPSEVG) and the Manresa School of
Engineering (EPSEM). The first year of all these courses is the same. Upon completing it, students must apply for admission to
the courses with which they would like to continue, in order of preference. The school will assign the places based on each
student's application and academic record in the subjects taken at the school.
Pre-enrolment
To study at the UPC, candidates must complete the university pre-enrolment process through the Catalan University
Admissions Advisory Office , which is responsible for processing admission to all Catalan public universities. The preenrolment process can be completed online on the established dates in May and September.
Minimum entrance mark
The qualifying mark for admission to a given university course for batxillerat students is calculated using the mark obtained in
the batxillerat curriculum (60%) and the mark obtained in the PAU (40%). This mark must be equal to or greater than the
minimum entrance mark, which is established based on the demand for a course and the number of places offered. There is
thus no direct relationship between the minimum entrance mark and the difficulty of a course. The minimum entrance mark is
determined at the end of the place assignment process. Consequently, only the minimum entrance mark for the previous
academic year is known during the pre-enrolment process, and it is provided solely by way of example. Click here
to see
the minimum entrance marks from previous years.
Enrolment
If, after completing the pre-enrolment process at the UPC and passing the PAU, you are assigned a place at the University,
you must complete the university enrolment process. At the specified time, you will need to log into the UPC enrolment
website, which is available in July and September. There you will find detailed information about the enrolment process:
description of the process, calendar, required documents, payment methods, information about available grants and financial
aid, links to schools, and the academic regulations FAQs.
Visas
Citizens of the European Union (EU), Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway do not need visas. They will automatically be issued a
foreigner identification number (NIE) and a residence card. Citizens of non-EU member countries must apply for a visa to study in Spain. These visas are issued by the Spanish embassy
and consulates in the country of origin and are not required for courses with a duration of less than three months.

General academic admission requirements
These courses are open to candidates who hold an official Spanish university degree or any other official university degree
issued by a university in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that qualifies the holder to pursue master's-level training
in the issuing country.
placement
Grants and financial aid
They are likewise open to candidates who hold a degree issued by a university from a country that does not belong to the
EHEA that has been homologated as a Spanish degree that qualifies the holder to pursue master's-level training. If the degree
has not been homologated, the University must first verify that the course provides an equivalent level of training to the
corresponding official Spanish university degree and that it qualifies the holder to pursue master's-level training in the issuing
country. Admission by this means shall not, under any circumstances, entail the homologation of the previous qualification or
its recognition for any purpose other than to enrol in the master's degree course. However, the master's degree awarded to
students who successfully complete the course will be officially valid. In addition to these general admission requirements,
which apply to all master's degree courses, each course may also establish its own specific admission requirements.
Specific requirements and admission criteria
Some official master's degree courses have specific admission requirements and criteria. When you click on the name of a
master's degree course, you will be shown a course description that includes the sections on ;specific requirements; and
;admission criteria;.
Pre-enrolment

Once you have entered the details and uploaded the documents, submit the online application form for
administrative and academic review. You will be able to check the status of your application throughout the
admissions process (see;Application status ; in the FAQs for the pre-enrolment application).
Students must pay a pre-enrolment fee of €30. The price applies to each pre-enrolment for a master's degree
course run by the UPC. Students who pre-enrol for more than one course must pay a €30 pre-enrolment fee for
each course. These fees are non-refundable.
You may make changes to your application until the deadline for pre-enrolment by entering your username (valid
e-mail address) and the assigned password.
If you would like to pre-enrol in more than one master's degree course, you do not need to re-enter the details
you have already provided.
Successful applicants must ACCEPT the place in the pre-enrolment application and pay €600 following the
instructions given in the form they will have received by e-mail. This amount will be deducted from the enrolment
fee when you officially enrol, but if you do not enrol you will not be entitled to a refund unless the master’s degree
is cancelled.
Use the relevant section of the pre-enrolment application form to explain what documents you are providing
(official degree, etc.) as proof of your eligibility to enrol in the master's degree course. You may also upload these
documents as attachments.

The pre-enrolment process is handled by the Catalan University Admissions Advisory Office, which processes online admission
to master's degree courses for diploma and degree holders, ensuring the principles of publicity, equality, merit and ability.
accesnet.gencat.cat
Places will be assigned on the basis of candidates' university entrance mark, i.e. the average mark for their academic record,
regardless of the date on the record for the university course qualifying them to apply.
The average mark for the academic record will be calculated pursuant to the terms of Royal Decree 1892/2008, of 14
November, which amends Royal Decree 1267/1994, of 10 June, regulating the conditions for entry to official university
bachelor's degree courses and the admissions procedures for Spanish public universities (Art. 55, f), and the Resolution of the
Student Affairs and Admissions Committee of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia of 15 March 2011.
For master's degree courses in mathematics, the following additional weightings will be used:
degree in mathematics or physics: +4 points
engineering degree or degree in informatics: +3 points
architecture degree or degree in statistics: +2 points
degree in business administration and management, economics or business: +1 point.
Minimum student numbers
In accordance with the criteria established by the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, for a master's degree course to be taught, a
minimum number of 20 students must have enrolled by the end of the September enrolment period. If this number is not reached,
there is no guarantee that the course will be offered.
If a master's degree course is cancelled for this reason, the amount of the enrolment fee will be refunded and the affected
students will be offered places in other master's degree courses.
What are the fees for master's degrees?
The fees for master’s degrees are public and set by the Catalan government within the limits established by the Spanish
government, as is the case for any official university course of study in Catalonia. The fee per ECTS credit for the 2012–2013
academic year. For non-resident foreign students who are not EU nationals, the fee is 1,5 the amount stated. Advance payment of the admission fee
To officially secure a place and gain admission to a master’s degree, applicants must ACCEPT the place in the pre-enrolment
application and pay €600 following the instructions given in the form they will have received by e-mail. This amount will be
deducted from the enrolment fee when you officially enrol, but if you do not enrol you will not be entitled to a refund unless
the master’s degree is cancelled. Enrolment
The unit responsible for organising each master's degree will notify applicants of the date, place and documents they must
furnish to prove that they meet the admission requirements.
The documents to be furnished will depend on where they earned their degree or completed the course that qualifies them
to enrol in the master's degree course:

Considerations to bear in mind
Enrolment is the formal relationship between the University and the student; it is a mutual commitment to work together over the course of an entire year. As such, it is
one of the most important academic events.
As a general rule, new students at the UPC complete the ordinary enrolment process using the self-enrolment system, and all other students complete it
online.
Enrolment through the self-enrolment system must be completed at the assigned date and time and, where applicable, may be done by someone else. In such cases,
the offering school may ask the proxy to provide written authorisation from the student.
Should the school offer the option of online enrolment, the calendars and procedures will be published at the school secretary's office or on its website.
Remember, once you have enrolled, you are required to pay the public fees for the requested academic services. Failure to pay the enrolment fee does not entail the
cancellation thereof.
Enrolment on bachelor's degree courses
The bachelor's degree courses offered at the UPC may be taken full- or part-time.
The mode of delivery chosen will be maintained for each subsequent enrolment unless a change in the mode of delivery is requested and granted.
Full-time students enrolling for the first time on the first year of a bachelor's degree course must enrol for 30 credits, if the enrolment is semester-based, or 60
credits, if it is annual. Part-time students do not need to enrol for the full year, but rather for a maximum of 36 credits per academic year (18 ECTS credits per
semester).
This choice will apply to all subsequent enrolment, unless the student requests a change and the request is approved.
Students enrolling in a course for the first time, but not on the first year thereof, must enrol for at least 12 ECTS credits in their first academic year.
As a general rule, students must pass at least 12 ECTS credits in their first academic year (this time is calculated regardless of how many enrolments are
processed).
Notwithstanding the terms of the previous paragraph, all UPC courses leading to an official bachelor's degree include an initial stage comprising the 60 ECTS credits of
the first academic year. Students must pass the minimum number of credits from the initial stage established by the offering school for each course. This minimum will
be between 42 and 60 ECTS credits from the initial stage.
Students must pass this minimum number of credits within a maximum period of two academic years, if they are enrolled full-time, or a maximum period of four
academic years, if they are enrolled part-time (with either type of enrolment, the time is calculated regardless of how many enrolments are processed). Should they fail
to do this, they will not be able to continue on the same course at the school where they started it or start any other course given at that school with the same initial
stage as the course from which they were dismissed.
All of these points and others related to the enrolment process are explained in detail in the academic regulations (www.upc.edu/sga/normatives
Spanish) or on the school's website.
in Catalan and
Cost of the course. The Decree establishing the fees for services rendered by public Catalan universities was published in the Official Gazette of the Catalan
Government on 14 July 2011. The full text is available at www.upc.edu/sga
(in Catalan and Spanish).
Documents to be attached
New students who are Spanish must submit the original and a photocopy of their National Identity Document (DNI). Foreigners must submit the original and a
photocopy of their Foreigner Identification Number (NIE) and passport. If you do not yet have a NIE, a photocopy of your application for it must be provided,
and the NIE must be presented within a maximum of three months from the date of enrolment.
To complete the enrolment, you must submit the following general documentation

Other services are optional and require registration and payment of a fee. Upon enrolling, students may indicate any optional services they would like to use and pay
the fee by adding it to the cost of the enrolment.
These services include:

Teaching
objectives
The main teaching objectives of the Diploma in Science, Technology and Society are, first, to promote
university education for adults in an increasingly large age group and, second, to make higher education
available to people who have never had the chance to pursue it. Additionally, the course seeks to offer
people wishing to learn more about the subject areas of the Diploma the chance to do so.
What will you
learn?
Students of this course will broaden and deepen their understanding of several areas of knowledge. They
will learn what caused the major historical and social shifts of the modern world and share their experience
and knowledge in dynamic, motivated work groups. They will moreover be given the tools and knowledge
they need to give new cultural and social impetus to their immediate environments.
Upon
completion
Upon completion of the course, diploma holders will have acquired a set of new communication technology
skills and scientific and cultural knowledge that will afford them valuable insight into contemporary
technological society.
