Indiana University East Presents: 2nd National Juried Exhibition “Art + Science”: Call for Entries Submission Deadline: Friday, February 12th, 2016 Exhibition: March 28th – May 13th, 2016 Reception and Juror’s Talk: Thursday, April 21st, 2016 As part of an ongoing commitment to promote contemporary art practices, the Fine Arts Department, with the support of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, invites artists to submit entries to our second themed national juried art exhibition. The theme rotates each year and is intended to exhibit the most cohesive group exhibition possible while promoting an in-depth dialogue in a multilayered manner about the given theme. This year’s theme is “Art + Science,” and artists are invited to submit two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and video (no installation or performance) work that address this theme. For all works requiring electronics besides a simple monitor, artists must provide necessary equipment. Art and Science, although they may at first seem to be at the opposite end of the spectrum of disciplines, have much in common: problem-solving, curiosity of the unknown, and experimentation. Fields of science have also provided inspiration for countless artists throughout history, and continue to inform many artists’ work today. Science for the purpose of this exhibition can be interpreted broadly, including, but not limited to, anatomy, physiology, botany, zoology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, meteorology, environmental science, psychology, geography, and computer technology. We welcome works in which science provided a point of departure and/or inspiration for the work as well as those works where science and the scientific method are integral part of the process itself. Accepted work will be exhibited at the Tom Thomas Gallery in Whitewater Hall at Indiana University East from March 28th to May 13th, 2016. Juror This year’s juror is Lily Simonson. She is an artist based in Los Angeles who frequently embeds in scientific expeditions to explore and paint remote environments and the otherworldly creatures that inhabit them. She spent three months SCUBA diving and camping in Antarctica as the 2014-15 National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Awardee. She has also served as the resident artist aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus and the Research Vessel Melville painting organisms harvested from the deep sea. Her works have been exhibited across the US and Europe and her art has appeared in a range of media outlets, including the LA Times, LA Weekly, MTV, the Huffington Post, CBS News, and MSNBC. Simonson holds an MFA from UCLA and a BA from UC Berkeley. She has taught painting and drawing at UC Berkeley, the Norton Simon Museum of Art, and CSU Pomona.
