Technical information
Capacitors heat up when a ripple current IAC is applied to them. As the model below shows the ESR and the thermal resistance Rth are the main factors influencing the resulting hotspot temperature THS. A low ESR and a low inner
thermal resistance between the winding and the base of the capacitor therefore are necessary in order to operate
the capacitors at a high maximum ripple current and a constant ambient temperature Ta without exceeding a maximum THS value.

Thanks to the carefully selected materials and an intelligent winding design all capacitors in the industrial series
exhibit a very low ESR (up to 40% lower) at operating conditions between 60 °C and 85 °C. The thermal resistance is also significantly lower (by about 50%) than that of standard capacitors, which results in higher ripple
current capabilities, especially at high frequencies as demonstrated for the B43544 (105 °C) industrial series in the
diagram below. For example, the permissible ripple current IAC of a 470 µF/400 V capacitor in a 30 × 45 mm can
(B43544A9477M) is 72% higher at 10000 Hz than at 100 Hz (curve a).
Permissible ripple current IAC as a factor of frequency f
Thus, the industrial snap-in series offer up to +45% more ripple-current capability than comparable multi-purpose
series at typical operating conditions.
