On our website is a document detailing the Steps to Success that comprise the Word Detective series plus the philosophy and methodology behind the popular series. After 8-years, quantitative data regarding it’s positive effect within the classroom environment has become available. Analysis of this data has yielded two distinct trends. First, the series is All-inclusive, helping those doing well to do better and giving those that have fallen behind the skills to enjoy remarkable improvements. Secondly, the earlier the children started with Joy’s material the greater the difference they attained throughout their education versus the national average. There are 7 fundamental ingredients for productive English learning and whilst all our Apps cater for many of these, nothing can adequately replace the benefits of personal interaction, be it with a teacher, parent or peers. HEAR IT – SPOKEN CLEARLY SAY IT – PRACTICE WHAT YOU HEAR SEE IT - SEE THE IMAGES WHILST SAYING/HEARING THEM ENJOY IT – LEARNING IS SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN FUN AND INTERACTIVE EMBED IT – REPETITION TAILOR IT – ENCOURAGE THE USE OF VOCABULARY LEARNED IN THE HOME AND EVERYDAY LIFE CONSTANT USE – TOTAL IMMERSION. Thus, whilst this document provides helpful explanations as to why and what 7 THE APPBACH the child is learning, it also offers suggestions, study aids and games for reinforcement within the home. - BACKGROUND - A s humans we are born with the innate ability to communicate via speech. We are not on the other hand, born with the innate ability to either read or write. These are both skills that we have to develop on the back of our spoken knowledge. Thus, it would seem logical to learn the basics of speech before complicating matters with reading and writing. Rather like walking before you can run. This is the approach Joy takes and explains why, for the user, there are no letters associated with any sounds in this App. Accepting this approach will help in understanding one of the biggest issues facing the early teachings of literacy. Spoken English is broken down into 45/46 individual sounds (depending on your nationality/accent). These sounds are known as phonemes. Regardless of your accent, there are still only 26 letters in the alphabet so how is it possible to represent all 46 phonemes with just 26-letters? The answer is: it isn’t! Most of us are taught /S/ for “Snake” but what about the sound of the /S/ in the words “sugar” or “his.” Clearly these are different sounds and linking a single letter to multiple sounds so early can lead to confusion in later learning that is much better avoided. Instead the individual sounds are linked to graphemes which are letters or combinations. For example, the word “book” is comprised of three individual phonemes represented by the following graphemes: /b/ / oo/ /k/*. The only time when a single letter is used in conjunction with two different sounds is when dealing with vowels and even then they are separated by categories with an associated description e.g. short-vowel /a/ for anchor, axe or long-vowel /a/ for apron, eight, ape. The word “eight” is deliberately included to help reinforce that only SOUND is the important factor and to highlight that the long-vowel sound /a/ can be written various ways. *sounds are written between // to differentiate them e.g. the “b-sound” in book is written /b/ 8 CAREGIVER’S GUIDE TO SOUNDS LIKE FUN - WHY IS THE LEARNING OF SOUNDS SO IMPORTANT? - U nderstanding that the words apron and eight are pronounced the same way is not a reason to justify extensive classroom study. BUT, being able to understand the rules of English enough to know that the long vowel sound /a/ can be written differently depending on the circumstances of its use is crucial for good reading, writing and spelling. An overwhelming amount of evidence shows that once phonics knowledge is incorporated only then can the proper teaching of the alphabetic code begin. It is the joint application of this knowledge that results in a dramatic simplification of the spelling rules. Being able to properly understand and utilise this knowledge results in enjoyable advances in reading, writing and spelling - SOUNDS LIKE FUN / WORKFLOW The objective of this App is to teach the 45/46 sounds of English whilst introducing new and varied vocabulary. The sounds are divided into 5-groups. These are listed below together with the sounds they contain. The sounds are themselves placed in groups of two or three for ease of use. GROUP 1 – CONSONANTS: (/P/ /T/ /K/), (/B/ /D/ /G/), (/CH/ /J/), (/Y/ /W/), (/X/ QU/) GROUP 2 – CONSONANTS: (/S/ /SH/ /TH/), (/F/ /H/), (/V/ /Z/), (/M/ /N/ /NG/), (/L/ /R/), (/ZH/ /TH/) SHORT VOWELS: (/A/ /E/ /I/), (/O/ /U/ /OO/) LONG VOWELS: (/A/ /I/ /U/), (/E/ /O/ /OO/) OTHER VOWEL SOUNDS: (/ER/ /OR/ /AR/), (/EAR/ /AIR), (/OY/ /OW/), (/AW/)* *the /aw/ sound is the 46th sound common only in American and Canadian dialects 9 THE APPBACH THE SOUNDS ARE PRESENTED IN THE APP AS SHOWN IN THE SCREENSHOT BELOW You will notice that below each sound group are 4 picture boxes. These represent the four levels that the user needs to pass through with each sound group in order to progress. The yellow box marks the progress of the user. At any time, you may choose to go back and repeat a sound group that come before the yellow box. However you are unable to jump in front. The stars at the top are there to reward the user on completion of each sound group. LEVEL 1 – UNDERSEA – LEARNING THE SOUND (HEAR IT / SAY IT) On pressing the yellow bubble, the user will hear and should repeat the sounds as they are spoken. These are the individual phonemes 10 CAREGIVER’S GUIDE TO SOUNDS LIKE FUN LEVEL 2 – BUTTERFLY – REINFORCING THE SOUND AND ASSOCIATING IT WITH AN IMAGE (HEAR IT / SEE IT) Pressing the 5 eyes on the butterfly will reveal 5 images that contain the sound being learnt (with the exception of (/zh/ and /th/) which have only two and four images respectively). For ease of learning, care has been taken at this stage to find images that generally position the sound in the same place in each word e.g. At the front e.g. /sh/ or the back e.g. /o/ of the words Shark Tomato Shoe Bow & Arrow Ship Wheelbarrow Shell Rainbow Shed Window Nevertheless, it is not always possible. This is not a problem, on the contrary, it is good that children learn to expect diversity early on and not be constrained by rules. This level blends sound analysis with vocabulary learning. LEVEL 3 – JACK-IN-THE-BOX (ENJOY IT, EMBED IT) Probably the most enjoyable game for the younger user, it practices the sound analysis skills whilst reinforcing the new vocabulary. It is important to understand the child cannot move forward in the App until answering correctly. In the meantime, any wrong answer is still serving the purpose of reinforcing the vocabulary being learnt. Thus caregivers are encouraged to leave the child to play as long as possible seeing as there is quite a lot of incentive to get it wrong! LEVEL 4 – HIDE AND SEEK (ADULT SUPERVISION MAY BE REQUIRED) Potentially the most rewarding part of the App it is also the most difficult for the younger user just because of the sheer magnitude of information that 11 THE APPBACH needs to be processed. However, you are encouraged to help until the child is able to search the screens alone. Once they have grasped the idea you will be amazed at how well they remember where to find the images. It is deliberate as it not only consolidates vocabulary knowledge but it also stimulates visual recognition skills. 1A 1B 2A 2B 3A 3B 4A 4B 5A 5B 6A 6B 7A 7B 8B 12 CAREGIVER’S GUIDE TO SOUNDS LIKE FUN - MOVING THROUGH THE APP Within the classroom the App would represent a core component of 16-weeks of tuition. Learning would be broken down into one or two groups of sounds and then reinforced communally. To get the best out of the App we recommend that a similar approach is taken at home. Within the house there are many items that not only - SCENES STRUCTURE begin but contain the sounds being learned e.g. the long-vowel sound There are 9 screens in total laid /a/. Be careful as (a) you will be sur13 THE APPBACH prised by how many words they know and (b) the complexity of some of the words. I am wearing a magic T-shirt and it has an imaginary word on it. The word begins with /f/. Can you guess what it is? Sound Bingo. If you are prepared to take the time to prepare some picture cards you can pass them about and call out the “sounds”. The players need to yell out the images that contain that sound if they have one – excellent for vocabulary and interactive learning. Make the games interesting, interactive and enjoyable for the players (ie. Don’t make them too difficult). If, for example, your child is into space adventures the word “droid” for the /oy/ sound can easily be related to everyday play. If they are into fairy tales, “royal” might be a better choice. Try and incorporate the sounds into your speech for that day. In example 5, there are 4 words that have the /oy/ sound. Use the images and guides in Sounds like Fun to encourage the child to come out with the words/sounds. For example when learning the /or/ sound you can move to the zoo scene and say “What’s that animal?” (lion) “Correct! And what sound does the lion make?” (roar). Other examples include Cow – “moo” /oo/, Cuckoo – “cuckoo, cuckoo” /oo/, Cat – “meow” /ow/ etc. Children love stories and even more so, stories that have been made up by their parents. Why not spend a little time each day writing a short story that incorporates as many of the day’s sounds as possible. Free your mind! Madeup words, worlds and creatures are all valid at this age. 14 CAREGIVER’S GUIDE TO SOUNDS LIKE FUN - KEY Image: The image used in the App to represent the sound #: 1 – words/images used in the US/Can version and either not used or used for a different sound in the NZ/Aus/UK version. #: 2 – words/images used in the NZ/Aus/UK version and either not used or used for a different sound in the US/Can version. Group: The general category under which each sound has been classified within the App Sound: the sound displayed by graphemes. The apostrophe after or before the sound helps guide its position with the words and hence difference in pronunciation e.g. /th’/ is the sound at the start of the word and /th/ is in the middle of the word Scene: The picture in which the image can be found (see Page 5) in Level 4 Additional Words: These are some simple everyday words that can be incorporated into your own activities and vocabulary to reinforce the sound learned. * - indicates an image that has been used in conjunction with another sound in the App (e.g. Ape for /p/ and Ape for long vowel /a/). This is not the same thing as associating two words with the same image (e.g. ape and monkey) and is something we have deliberately avoided. It is good that children learn that words can contain different sounds and is in fact the next step in learning. However, please do not force the issue if you think it is leading to confusion. ~ - indicates a word that can be used in conjunction with an image in the App to enhance it’s understanding, interest or placement. For example, an additional word in sound /p/ is erupt.
