BULLDOGS TAKE STEP FORWARD
IN SECOND SOCON SEASON
T
he Samford baseball team made
the biggest turnaround from its first
season in the Southern Conference
to its second in 2010.
After posting a record of 17-35
overall and 9-21 in the SoCon in 2009,
the Bulldogs improved to 31-25 overall
and 17-12 in league play last season.
The team also went from finishing ninth
in the SoCon and not qualifying for the
Conference Tournament to finishing fifth
and earning a spot in the championship
event.
At the conclusion of the season,
senior outfielder David Schulze was
named first-team All-Conference, while
Bo Smith
58
senior Wayne Miller and freshman Lex
Rutledge were named second-team
All-Conference.
Samford opened the season with a
four-game home series with Marshall.
The Bulldogs won the first two games,
9-4 and 9-5, before dropping the final
two games by scores of 5-4 and 10-6.
After a 9-7 win at in-state rival Troy,
the Bulldogs played a three-game series
at Kennesaw State. Samford dropped
the first game of the series, 11-6, before
winning games two and three, 9-7 and
5-3.
The Bulldogs then won two of three
games over Evansville, winning games
David Schulze
one and two, 9-2 and 7-4, before
dropping game three by a score of 8-4.
After dropping a midweek game to
Michigan State, 7-4, Samford opened
Southern Conference play at the
College of Charleston. The Bulldogs
plated 42 runs in the three games in
taking two of three games on the road
against one of the top teams in the
SoCon.
Samford won game one from the
Cougars, 20-13, fell in game two,
14-4, before winning game three and
the series, 18-4.
Samford played four nonconference

the weekend.
After dropping midweek games to
Auburn and Jacksonville State, Samford

Furman the next weekend. The Bulldogs
swept the Paladins, winning three games
by scores of 3-2, 13-4 and 4-1.
Samford continued its hot streak in
SoCon play with a three-game sweep at
Davidson. Samford earned wins by
scores of 16-6, 11-7 and 6-5.
After a home nonconference loss to
Troy by a score of 11-9, Samford
earned its third-straight SoCon sweep by
taking three games from UNC–
Greensboro. The Bulldogs defeated the
Spartans by scores of 9-5, 7-6 and 8-4.
With the sweep, Samford improved to
11-1 in SoCon play and 20-11 overall.
Samford then earned a 7-5 midweek win at Alabama.
Georgia Southern snapped
Samford’s 10-game SoCon win streak
as the Eagles swept the Bulldogs in
Statesboro by scores of 5-2, 14-9 and
12-9.
The Bulldogs took two midweek
games from cross-town rival UAB,
winning, 8-1, at UAB’s Young Memorial
Field and 11-10 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The next weekend, Samford hosted
a SoCon series with Appalachian State.
Due to inclement weather, the teams were
able to play only two games, with ASU
winning both by scores of 17-7 and 7-3.
Samford then suffered a midweek
setback at 27th-ranked Auburn, 11-4.
The Bulldogs bounced back by
winning two of three games from SoCon
leader The Citadel. Samford won games
one and three by scores of 7-5 and
12-11, and fell in game two, 14-6.
Samford then lost two of three
games at Wofford before earning its
second midweek victory over Alabama,
winning by a score of 8-7 at Joe Lee
Griffin Field.
The next weekend, Samford won
two of three games against Western
Carolina. The Bulldogs won game one,
7-6, lost game two, 8-1, and earned the
series win with an 8-5 victory in game
three.

Samford dropped game one, 4-6, but
came back to win game two, 11-10, in
10 innngs before falling, 5-1, in game
three. The series loss gave Samford the
No. 5 seed in the SoCon Tournament,
while Elon earned the No. 4 seed.
Samford met Elon for a fourthstraight time in a first-round game in the
SoCon Tournament.
In an outstanding pitcher’s duel,
Elon scored a run in the bottom of the
ninth inning to win, 1-0.
Samford then took on Furman in an
elimination game. The Bulldogs stayed
alive with a 13-10 win over the
Paladins.
In the next round, Samford met Elon
again in an elimination game. In
another tough battle, Samford was
eliminated by Elon by a score of 7-4.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
T
he Southern Conference [SoCon], which began its 90th season of intercollegiate competition in
2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of student-athletes, building lifelong
leaders and role models. SoCon has been on the forefront of innovation to develop creative
solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. SoCon established the first conference
basketball tournament (1921), tackled the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922) and developed
women’s championships (1984). It was the first conference to institute the 3-point goal in basketball
(1980). SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association.
Academic excellence is a major part of SoCon’s tradition. Hundreds of SoCon student-athletes
have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District teams.
Nineteen Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.
SoCon consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast, and sponsors 19 varsity
sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
John Iamarino
Commissioner
Membership History
Geoff Cabe
Senior Associate
Commissioner
On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14
of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Association’s [SIAA] 30 members met at
Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the
Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the
inaugural meeting were officials from
Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute
(now Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia
School of Technology (now Georgia Tech),
Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now
Mississippi State), North Carolina, North
Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia
Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and
Washington & Lee.
Dr. S. V. Sanford of Georgia was
chosen as acting chairman, and N. W.
Dougherty of Tennessee was named
secretary. The decision to form a new
athletics conference was motivated by the
desire to have a workable number of
conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA, it was
impossible to play every school at least
once during the regular season.
Play began in the fall of 1921. A year
later, six more schools joined the fledgling
league: Tulane (which had attended the
inaugural meeting but had elected not to
join), Florida, Louisiana (now LSU),
Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
VMI joined in 1925, and Duke was added
in 1929.
By the 1930s, membership in SoCon
had reached 23 schools. In 1932, Sanford
announced that 13 institutions west and
south of the Appalachian Mountains were
reorganizing as the Southeastern
Conference. Members of that new league
included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic
Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School
of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of
the South, Tennessee, Tulane and
Vanderbilt. Florida’s Dr. J. J. Tigert,
spokesman for the withdrawing group,
regretted the move but believed it was
necessary as SoCon had grown too large.
By 1952, SoCon included 17 colleges
and universities. Another split occurred
when seven schools—Clemson, Duke,
Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina
State, South Carolina and Wake
Sue Arakas
Associate Commissioner
Doug King
Associate Commissioner
for Compliance
Forest—departed to form the Atlantic Coast
Conference, which began play in 1953.
The revamped SoCon included The Citadel,
Davidson, Furman, George Washington,
Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington
& Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.
Today, the league continues to thrive
with a membership that includes 12
institutions and a footprint that spans five
states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current
league members are Appalachian State,
College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The
Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia
Southern, Samford, UNC–Greensboro,
Western Carolina and Wofford.
Leadership
SoCon named its first commissioner, former
Duke head football coach Wallace Wade,
in December 1950. Lloyd Jordan replaced
Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and
served until Ken Germann became the
league head in 1974. Germann was
commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include
women’s athletics. In 1987, he was
succeeded by Dave Hart, who spearheaded
the transfer of the league office from
Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C.
Wright Waters succeeded Hart in
1991. SoCon expanded to 12 members,
added three women’s sports and posted
record revenue from the basketball
tournament. Waters was followed by Alfred
B. White in 1998. A veteran member of the
NCAA office, White introduced the current
conference logo and elevated SoCon’s
commitment to the marketing and development of corporate partners.
Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001 to 2005 and orchestrated
SoCon’s move from Asheville, N.C. to
Spartanburg, S.C.
John Iamarino was named commissioner of SoCon on Jan. 2, 2006. He has
promoted the conference through an
ambitious agenda that has improved
competition, upgraded compliance-related
matters, and increased the marketing and
brand awareness of the conference and its
member institutions.

Championship History
The first Southern Conference
Championship was the league basketball
tournament held in 1922. The tournament
remains the oldest of its kind in college
basketball.
Commissioner Germann spearheaded
SoCon’s expansion to include women’s
athletics during the 1983–84 season. That
year, league championships were held in
volleyball, basketball and tennis. Crosscountry joined the mix in 1985, and the
league began holding indoor and outdoor
track championships in 1988. SoCon
instituted golf and softball championships
in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in
the fall of 1994.
The Germann Cup, named in honor of
the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in
the conference.
SoCon declares champions in 10
men’s sports—football, soccer, crosscountry, basketball, indoor track and field,
outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball,
tennis and golf —and nine women’s
sports—soccer, volleyball, cross-country,
basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor
track and field, tennis, golf and softball.
