You are working in an organisation with social, ecological or cultural objectives?
You are looking for young people from the South and the North who dedicate
themselves to fair and sustainable development? Young people who want to learn
from other people and would like to participate in a cross-boarder project in cooperation with a partner organisation in Germany and one in Africa, Asia, Latin
America or South-East Europe?
The ASA Program South-North
The ASA South-North Program
is a development education program based in Germany. Every year, the program gives 250 young Europeans and
about 20 youths from the South a chance to participate in an education and qualification program dedicated to
global education. The aim of the ASA Program is to strengthen the commitment of young people to a fair and
sustainable development.
The ASA Program is part of ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH and is mostly financed by the Ministry of Development
and Economic Cooperation (BMZ) in Germany. The ASA Program is a politically independent and non-profit organisation.
The South-North Program: cooperation in an international team and
North-South dialogue
The aim of the South-North Program is to encourage dialogue in a global education perspective. The SouthNorth projects consist of a practical 3-month phase with an organisation in Germany and of a 3-month internship with an organisation in a partner country in Africa, Asia, Latin America or South-East Europe. A team of
one or two German participants and of one or two participants from the partner country is formed. The team
members participate together in the two phases. They contribute to the project of the partner organisation and
carry out studies and analysis, organise trainings and workshops or support the organisation by doing public
relations work. The two practical phases have a common theme. The main focus is the mutual learning process
and the team work of the South and North participants.
The South-North projects aim at:
- g iving the participants the opportunity to better understand global interdependencies and the issues of
development policy,
- g iving them a chance to better understand the challenges of South-North dialogue,
- g iving them organisational and technical skills in an international context,
- s imultaneously, supporting partner organisations with a qualified cooperation.
Some examples of South-North projects:
- F ootball and global education in Germany and Argentina
-R
enewable energies in Germany and Cameroon
- P roduction of radio programs in Germany and Brazil
- S tudy on medicine trade in Germany and India
Who are the ASA grant holders?
Students of any field and young employees who have completed a non-academic education
can apply to be North participants. They have to be aged 21 to 30. They are no development
experts but socially committed people who want to get involved for a fair and sustainable
development.
Become our partner!
As a partner organisation, you ensure yourself the cooperation of young qualified people
from Germany and from a partner country in the South, who support your organisation.
Furthermore, you have the opportunity to start and develop a cooperation with an organisation from the partner country, since you propose and coach a project that supports the
work of your organisation. The participants bring you their know-how and their ideas and
wish to develop their skills with your support. After their stay abroad, the participants get
involved in their home country as multipliers for global education. They pass forward their
understanding of global interdependencies and get involved in sustainable development. As
partner organisation of an ASA project, you give the participants an important impulse for
their future engagement.
Contribution of the ASA Program
- We support the development and implementation of your project.
- We call for applicants for the internships in the North, collect the applications and choose
the candidates. We have many years of experience in this field.
- We support the learning process of the North and South participants by organising ASA
seminars. The participants receive important support from their tutors, who follow them
during the learning process. The themes tackled during the seminars are team building,
project management, intercultural communication, global interdependencies and personal
reflection.
- We help the South participants get a visa for their 90-day stay.
- We finance part of the South participants’ stay and pay for insurance fees (see below).

North phase (The South participants stay in Germany):
The ASA Program provides North partner organisations with 1‘730 euro per South participant. Furthermore, it pays for a 90-day insurance for the South participants (health, accident and third-party insurance). The financial means provided by the ASA Program can be
spent as you please. However, you must plan a certain amount for the flights of the South
participants (both ways), for their daily expenses (minimum 350 euro per month) and their
accommodation as well as possible travel expenses in Germany. This sum can also be used
to pay for expenses due to the project, for example public relations work, a language course
for the South participants or other. Moreover, the ASA Program reimburses the South participants’ travel expenses to the training seminars and back.
The financial means provided by ASA allow only partial financing of the North phase. Any
additional costs have to be supported by the North partner organisations. You can also raise
funds for the project. Additionally to the project proposal, partner organisations submit to
ASA a financial budget plan.
South phase (The North participants stay in the host country):
The ASA Program provides North participants with a partial grant of 2‘000 euro on average
for the South phase. This sum contains a supplement for travel and daily life expenses as well
as an allowance for travel expenses to the ASA seminars.
