A message from your PAC Chair Thank you parents and families for helping create such positive and early momentum this year. Your investment in our school is critical for your child and our community. Earlier this month, Mrs. Parmar led the teachers in an exercise to help establish spending priorities for PAC funds. The teachers prioritized the following items: (1) gym sense program, (2) new stereo in the gym, (3) laptop computers & cart, (4) increase in teacher discretionary funds, (5) art supplies, and (6) field trip transportation money per class. Other priorities included kilometre club ribbons, new medical bed, school wide performances, flash mob dance program, playground supplies, and a document camera. The PAC executive will present a balanced budget at the next meeting (Oct. 6th, 7pm, Library) aimed at supporting the teachers and our children. Please come see how we are strategically raising funds to cover important school expenses. - Kumi Abercrombie, PAC Chair Tips for protecting your kids from autumn’s creepy crawlies ‘Tis the season... to avoid head lice Healthy eating tips from BC Children’s Hospital Working together for your kids’ nutrition In a recent article published on the BC Children’s Hospital website, nutrition experts weigh in on how to prepare snacks and lunches for your children that will fuel them for the whole school day. Ideas include: With the return of the school year comes the return of every parent’s most dreaded vermin: head lice. Lice are most commonly spread by direct contact between individuals and fall is the highest risk time of year, but you can keep these tips in mind to avoid infestation: 1. Teach your kids not to share personal items such as hairbrushes, hats or clothes. 2. Use ponytails, braids and buns to keep long hair tied back. 3. Avoid touching heads - even a hug is enough time for the infestation to spread from one person to another. 4.Perform regular checks by combing through your child’s hair to catch a new infestation from spreading. Despite best efforts, at some point in your child’s life, he or she may end up with head lice, and it is important to reassure your child that s/he is not to blame—lice do not discriminate between clean and dirty hair. •Pairing at least two food groups for morning snack. For example, celery and sunflower seed butter. • “Eat the rainbow”: not only do colourful fruits and vegetables look more tempting, they are also a great way to mix up the vitamins and minerals that kids need. • Involve your kids in the process. As we all know, when our children have a voice, they are much more likely to “buy in”, so take them grocery shopping with you and invite them to be part of your family’s meal planning.
