Card reader security for Internet Banking

Instructions for use

Identify button – used when logging in to the Internet Bank with your card reader. You will be prompted by the Internet Bank to press this after you have inserted your card into the card reader.

Respond button – used when viewing a PDF of your statement, changing your memorable data or passnumber, or setting up, changing or making payments to individuals or organisations.

Sign button – used when setting up, changing or making payments to individuals or organisations.

Menu button – adjusts the screen contrast. Use numbers

1 and 3 to adjust contrast.

C button – clears all the numbers displayed on the card reader if you make a mistake.

CL button – clears the last number displayed on the card reader if you make a mistake.

OK button – you will be prompted by the Internet Bank to press this button after you have entered information requested into the card reader.

How to log in using your card reader

If you have a card reader, you should use this to log in to the Internet Bank (although you can use your passnumber and memorable data if you wish). To log in with your card reader just follow the simple steps below:

On the log in screen, enter your customer number.

If you have forgotten this, click the ‘I’ve forgotten my customer number’ option for help.

4 Enter your debit card PIN and press ‘OK’.

2 Select the card you wish to use from the drop down list and pop the card into your card reader (with the chip facing you and towards the bottom left).

5 Your card reader will display a passcode.

Enter this in the passcode box online and click ‘Log in’.

3 When asked to ‘Select function’ press the ‘Identify’ button.

How to authorise an online payment using your card reader

When making a payment online using the Internet Bank, you may be asked to use your card reader to authorise the transaction. To do this, just follow the steps below:

Select the card you wish to use from the drop down list and pop the card into your card reader (with the chip facing you and towards the bottom left).

4 Enter the reference number detailed on screen and press ‘OK’.

2 When asked to ‘Select Function’, press the

‘Sign’ button.

3 Enter your debit card PIN and press ‘OK’.

5 Enter the amount detailed on screen and press ’OK’.

6 Your card reader will display a passcode. Enter this in the passcode box online and click ‘Authorise’.

How to change your Internet and Mobile Banking log in details

You can change your Internet or Mobile Banking log in details using our Internet Banking service.

To change your memorable data or passnumber, please log in to the Internet Bank and:

1 Select ‘Manage’ - this tab is located at the top of the page.

Find ‘My security’ .

Select ‘View’ or ‘Change my security settings’ .

Find ‘My passnumber/memorable data’ .

Select the ‘Change’ link.

Update your details.

Select the ‘Confirm’ button.

8 You will then be required to authorise this. Please follow the same process as authorising a transaction (above) but select the

‘Respond’ button instead of ‘Sign’ .

Your security

• Never use your card reader to generate a security code for a caller – they are only used to log into Internet Banking or verifying the transactions you are making.

• Never reveal internet banking credentials over the phone – even if they claim to be an official caller from a credible organisation.

• Never carry out an online transaction when instructed by a caller over the phone, even if they claim to be an official caller from a credible organisation.

• Your bank/building society will never ask you to transfer money to another account for safe keeping.
