The focus and work of both CEO and CICEP centers on Engagement. While CICEP’s engagement definition places greater emphasis on economic development, both CEO and CICEP are guided by similar principles of practice. This session will examine, at a strategic level, how CEO and CICEP can continue to work together in the future to leverage synergies, more effectively share/transfer knowledge, and apply key learnings in these practice areas. The discussion features several higher education leaders who will share their perspectives, priorities, and real-world examples of practices employed at their institutions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the essential components of partnerships and talent development. 10:15 am – 11:15 pm Update and Idea Gathering for The New Engagement 11:15 am – 11:25 am Engagement Spotlight This year’s conference will feature “Engagement Spotlight” sessions, based on the success of “Innovation Spotlights” at the 2015 CICEP Summer Meeting. Engagement spotlights are brief presentations in which selected institutions “pitch” a particular engagement innovation, focusing on why it has been successful, and how others might adopt the innovation. 11:45 am – 1:00 pm Keynote Speake/Lunch Speaker: Mark Tebbe, Chairman, ChicagoNEXT 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm Measuring Engagement: Unpacking the Complexities Session Description: Over the last several years CEO, CICEP, and other APLU groups have independently explored ways to strengthen institutional capacity to measure the impact of community engagement and outreach initiatives. At the core of being able to develop broad-based, cross-cutting metrics for engagement is understanding the different purposes and goals across various APLU institutional engagement priorities. This session will highlight three contrasting approaches that explore what universities are aiming to accomplish through their engagement, how they are measuring it, and how they are organizing to support their engagement aims. Session participants will discuss the similarities, differences, and points of convergence regarding engagement’s role in higher education and the implications for metrics development. 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm Learning with Others: Examining the value of collaboration when developing entrepreneurship and engagement initiatives Session Description: The goal of this session is to share collaborative approaches for engaging campuses in broad change initiatives around entrepreneurship and community engagement. The panelists are from institutions at different stages of implementing broad-based initiatives that engage students, faculty, alumni, and their broader university communities in the development of regional innovation systems. 2 3:45 pm – 3:55 pm Engagement Spotlight 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm Rethinking Higher Education in the New World of Global Workforce Training Session Description: What will the world look like in 2030 with respect to the role higher education plays in workforce training both through education and policy development? Creating a conversation grounded in data and fueled by thought provoking questions, this session will examine the needs, expectations, and environment of a rapidly changing world and how higher education can either be a significant voice and player in leading and guiding the change or not. More specifically this session seeks to answer: How do we as a group mobilize and galvanize around an approach and with impact that is both revolutionary and evolutionary. What is currently happening on campuses today that can serve as models (incubators, on-line courses, etc.), launch platforms for innovation and impact? Tuesday, July 12th 8:00 am – 9:00 am Keynote Speaker and Breakfast Speaker: Jill Smart, President, National Academy of Human Resources and Director, Alex Mann Solutions 10:15 am – 11:15 am From Technology Transfer to The New Engagement: Emerging university contributions to innovation ecosystems Session Description: Quickly fading are the days of technology transfer offices focusing solely on patenting and licensing. Today, universities must move beyond a transactional approach to technology transfer, and integrate these efforts into broader engagement activities. To be part of a university’s overall efforts at shaping regional and national innovation ecosystems, technology transfer must connect with the institution’s efforts to be engaged in economic, community, and talent development. Linking these elements together as part of ecosystem with proven incentives is essential for achieving desired outcomes.
