Realizing strategic value from shared principles of practice
Session Description: To thrive in the 21st Century, higher education institutions must be
proactively engaged in advancing the societal and economic quality of life of the citizens
and communities in which they serve. The focus and work of both CEO and CICEP
centers on Engagement. While CICEP’s engagement definition places greater emphasis
on economic development, both CEO and CICEP are guided by similar principles of
practice. This session will examine, at a strategic level, how CEO and CICEP can
continue to work together in the future to leverage synergies, more effectively
share/transfer knowledge, and apply key learnings in these practice areas. The
discussion features several higher education leaders who will share their perspectives,
priorities, and real-world examples of practices employed at their institutions. Particular
emphasis will be placed on the essential components of partnerships and talent
development.

Engagement Spotlight
This year’s conference will feature “Engagement Spotlight” sessions, based on the
success of “Innovation Spotlights” at the 2015 CICEP Summer Meeting. Engagement
spotlights are brief presentations in which selected institutions “pitch” a particular
engagement innovation, focusing on why it has been successful, and how others might
adopt the innovation.

Keynote Speake/Lunch
 Speaker: Mark Tebbe, Chairman, ChicagoNEXT

Measuring Engagement: Unpacking the Complexities
Session Description: Over the last several years CEO, CICEP, and other APLU groups
have independently explored ways to strengthen institutional capacity to measure the
impact of community engagement and outreach initiatives. At the core of being able to
develop broad-based, cross-cutting metrics for engagement is understanding the
different purposes and goals across various APLU institutional engagement priorities.
This session will highlight three contrasting approaches that explore what universities
are aiming to accomplish through their engagement, how they are measuring it, and how
they are organizing to support their engagement aims. Session participants will discuss
the similarities, differences, and points of convergence regarding engagement’s role in
higher education and the implications for metrics development.
2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
Learning with Others: Examining the value of collaboration when developing
entrepreneurship and engagement initiatives
Session Description: The goal of this session is to share collaborative approaches for
engaging campuses in broad change initiatives around entrepreneurship and community
engagement. The panelists are from institutions at different stages of implementing
broad-based initiatives that engage students, faculty, alumni, and their broader
university communities in the development of regional innovation systems.

Rethinking Higher Education in the New World of Global Workforce Training
Session Description: What will the world look like in 2030 with respect to the role higher
education plays in workforce training both through education and policy development?
Creating a conversation grounded in data and fueled by thought provoking questions,
this session will examine the needs, expectations, and environment of a rapidly changing
world and how higher education can either be a significant voice and player in leading
and guiding the change or not. More specifically this session seeks to answer: How do
we as a group mobilize and galvanize around an approach and with impact that is both
revolutionary and evolutionary. What is currently happening on campuses today that
can serve as models (incubators, on-line courses, etc.), launch platforms for innovation
and impact?

From Technology Transfer to The New Engagement: Emerging university
contributions to innovation ecosystems
Session Description: Quickly fading are the days of technology transfer offices focusing
solely on patenting and licensing. Today, universities must move beyond a transactional
approach to technology transfer, and integrate these efforts into broader engagement
activities. To be part of a university’s overall efforts at shaping regional and national
innovation ecosystems, technology transfer must connect with the institution’s efforts to
be engaged in economic, community, and talent development. This session will explore
some of the ways in which public research universities are moving in this direction.
