Secular Holidays Election Day: God Gave Us Leaders All of you must be willing to obey completely those who rule over you. There are no authorities except the ones God has chosen. Those who now rule have been chosen by God. —Romans 13:1 NIrV Deaconess Jeanne M. Dicke, Minnesota We hear a lot of news about governments and the people who lead governments. Those who are leaders of countries are very important. They have a huge job to do. We depend on them to make many important choices. Our leaders need us to pray for them every day. • Can you name some important leaders in government? • Who is the leader of your country? Most towns and cities have a government leader called a mayor. Mayors are in charge of their budget and basic way of doing things. A mayor’s job is important to those who live in the town. Mayors make sure a town or city is a safe place to live. They make sure the roads are in good repair. They make sure the garbage is picked up and the water people drink is clean. Many times mayors work with the parks, museums, schools and other agencies in their area. • Who is the mayor of the town or city near you? • Have you ever talked to the mayor? • Did you vote for the mayor? Why or why not? • Do you pray for the mayor? Whether a government leader is the president of a country or the mayor of a town, the Bible tells us that God is the one who put them in charge. (Reread the Bible verse.) God gives leaders the authority to lead. If we didn’t have government leaders, our lives could be a mess. Everyone could do whatever they felt like, and it could get crazy. • What are some rules in your town or city to help keep people safe? • Let’s imagine for a moment. If you didn’t have to follow one of your town’s rules, which one would you not follow? Why? We need to listen to our leaders and show respect for them. If we don’t agree with them, we can politely ask them to listen to us. A good leader will listen to us and try their best to help us. If a leader is really bad, they will hopefully lose their job or not be elected again. Think about leaders you can pray for today. Ask God to bless them and help them do their job to the best of their ability. PRAYER Dear heavenly Father, thank you for giving us leaders in government. Help us listen to them and show respect for them. Help us speak up when we have a problem. Forgive us when we forget to pray for our leaders. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. 160 Time with God: DAILY Conversations - Volume 1B
