James’s story “I’m a very serious worker.” James It was said with a smile, but it is also the truth. James is a serious worker: he knew what he wanted to do – start his own business; and he knew that he needed some help to make it cost effective. Armed with his own business plan, James applied for a No Interest Micro-Business Loan which allowed him to purchase two expensive pieces of equipment – a laser leveler and a compacter. James started Koa Landscapes in March 2011 after five years working for landscape businesses owned by other people. Business: Koa Landscapes “I studied graphic design in college but knew I wanted to work in this area,” James said. Owner: James Davies “I also knew I wanted to work for myself. In fact, I already had a business plan, all I really needed was a loan to get me started. Service: • Paving and retaining walls • Lawn and irrigation installs • Stepping stones • Paved driveways • Fencing (paling and picket) • Water features • Low voltage lighting • Mulching • 3D designs also available “I was stuck having to pay to rent the major tools of the trade – a laser leveller and compacter – which really cut into the money I could make from each job.” James is already working most days of the week and sometimes employs an assistant to help out. But running his own business isn’t the end point for James’ ambitions. He is about to embark on an Advanced Diploma In Horticulture – Landscaping through ACS’s Distance Education program.
