Automatic Shutdown Reporting
Product Sheet
Document and verify every trip incident in your plant.
Use your existing Cause & Effect Diagrams as master for the configuration. Import and
- define all shutdown levels
- define all shutdown initiators
- define all effects - any equipment subject to shutdown procedure
o valves, pumps, motors, turbines etc.
o establish shutdown level linking (hierarchy)
- define the Event text mapping to identify the unique event for every cause and effect
The shutdown reporter application will analyze incoming events in your Alarm & Event Historian in a
background process, automatically creating the analysis results ready for presentation through an
intuitive web interface.
Export detailed analysis results directly to Excel.
Turn your Alarm and Event Log into valuable,
structured information.

SHUTDOWN ANALYZER
The Control System(s) generates Events as time-stamped textual information. Most events indicate a
change of state for an object; a valve is closed, operator initiates a command, a process value passes
a defined limit etc. Some events are also defined to be alarms. An Event and Alarm Collector
automatically collects and stores alarm and event data into the Plant or Enterprise Alarm and Event
Historian. Generally this results in a long ‘log file’ - a goldmine of information ready to be processed
for structured information.
The Shutdown Analyzer application is a tool for analyzing events resulting from the shutdown
sequences in a plant. During a shutdown sequence in a plant numerous events are generated in the
Control System. These events will be analyzed and compared with sets of configured ‘master events’.
The tool is designed to verify that the shutdown sequence has performed as expected according to
the master cause & effect diagrams.
In general a shutdown is controlled by multiple function control blocks in the Control System having
input and output parameters. The inputs may be field equipment or a control block from a higher
level. The output side may be a control block on next level, or a trigger/command function to stop
pumps, close valves etc.
The shutdown hierarchy may consist of two (or more) parallel systems: Emergency Shutdown
System (ESD) and Process Shutdown System (PSD). These systems are divided into levels indicating
the scope of shutdown at each level.

SHUTDOWN ANALYZER
A simplified overall shutdown hierarchy may be presented as:
The Shutdown Analyzer application will hold information of all the defined levels and input and
output parameters for each level. In addition it is possible to block and suppress actions performed
by each function control block. A shutdown analysis at a given time (trip event) will take into account
the actual blocked and suppressed status in order to give a correct result.
The C&E Importer utility will import your Cause and Effect Diagrams and create the master
configuration. Using the C&E Diagrams as single source avoids having to deal with multiple systems
to update when changes are needed. Simply import Cause and Effect Diagrams again to create a new
configuration revision in ASR.

SHUTDOWN ANALYZER
Enter the time period you would like to examine for shutdown events:
Pressing the Generate Report button will retrieve a tree-view list of all released shutdown levels
(trips) in the selected time period :
Selecting one of the levels
from the list opens a
detailed report, to the right.
The report includes the triggering Cause and a detailed list of all
Effects including
TimeStamp of ESD,PSD and PCDA Command
TimeStamp of response Tag (ie. Valve close started)
Timestamp of Safe position achieved
If an object was already in Safe position (ie. Closed or Stopped) at
the time of shutdown, this is correctly reported.
ASR will also handle Override and Inhibit state on inputs and outputs when configured. In ASR you
may export the analysis report directly to Excel. There are 3 predefined reports:
The Long Report :
A report with all details available
The Short Report:
A report less details
The Error Report:
List of effects with errors/deviation from master detected.
