(IMS) International Medicine Studies, s.r.o. (IMS) is the international student recruitment and support services arm of Pavol Jozef Safarik University (UPJS), Faculty of Medicine in Košice, Slovakia. We specialize in helping international students apply and enrol at UPJS’s general medicine and dentistry degree programs. As part of our mission, we also provide wide ranged support to international students throughout their studies. Our ongoing support ensures that students’ investment in education abroad is as successful and comfortable as possible. About UPJS, Faculty of Medicine Pavol Jozef Safarik University is located in Košice, the second largest city in Slovakia. Košice with its rich history, offers many cultural, sport events and activities for a diverse student community. The University was established in 1959 as the second university in Slovakia. It has made an important contribution to the development of educational and research activities in Slovakia. The University is named after an outstanding character in Slovak history, Pavol Jozef Safarik (1795-1861), a scientist, poet, linguist, ethnographer, archaeologist and educator. At present, UPJS consists of four faculties: Medicine, Science, Law and Arts. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1948 as a branch of the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak University, later called Comenius University in Bratislava. Then in 1959, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Philosophy merged, which led to the foundation of UPJS. The Faculty of Medicine closely cooperates with many significant universities and institutions around the world: Prague, Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Padova, Essen, Giessen, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zürich, Turku, Oulu, Salamanca, Krakow and others. The Faculty trains physicians and surgeons with broad general medical education, teaching them to provide professional medical aid and care aimed at preventive aspects of medicine. Vocational training is based on the latest knowledge in medical science and students are given the possibility to achieve scientific knowledge as well. Students acquire specialized knowledge in theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical subjects through lectures, seminars, clerkships, specialized practice and consultations. The Faculty of Medicine has several significant partners - the Faculty Hospital of L. Pasteur in Košice and six other medical facilities, where the faculty provides students with clinical training. UPJS Degree programmes The English programme is 17 years old, and hundreds have already successfully completed their studies and earned a degree in the field of General Medicine or Dental Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine provides two medical programmes for international students: General Medicine - a 6 year course (12 terms) ____________________________________________________________________________ International Medicine Studies s.r.o , Mlynske Nivy 73, 82105 Bratislava Slovak Republic Tel: ++421 2 402 076 18 Fax: ++421 2 58 24 7651 E mail:info@ims-medstudy.com 3 Dental Medicine - a 6 year course (12 terms) Both programmes are available for international students with a good command of English. The Faculty is closely connected to the Teaching Hospital in Košice, in which practical education in clinical disciplines is carried out. The last years of study consist of practical training in hospitals and health care institutes. The study is completed by state examinations before the Board of the Faculty Experts. Graduates are awarded the academic title "Doctor of General Medicine" (MD) or “Doctor of Dental Medicine” (D.M.D.). In 2001/2002, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was implemented. This system enables students to transfer between universities within the EU. The courses studied at UPJS and the value of the credit points accumulated are recognized at universities in other EU countries. Complying by this system also creates curriculum transparency further improving the recognition of degrees, thus the member states of the European Union are obliged to accept the diplomas issued in Slovakia, irrespective of the language of instruction. 6 Year General Medicine Degree Programme At UPJS, each academic year is divided into two semesters with a substantial winter and summer break. Graduates of General Medicine acquire theoretical knowledge from all preclinical and clinical subjects. With regards to practical knowledge, students learn therapeutics and clinics methods. They acquire qualification for specializing in respective branches or in medical research. Students prepare for, and take, obligatory state exams throughout the 6th year. For a brief overview, please see the curriculum. 6 Years Dental Medicine Degree Programme At UPJS, each academic year is divided into two semesters with a substantial winter and summer break. Graduates of Dental Medicine acquire theoretical knowledge from all preclinical and clinical branches. In addition, the graduate learns basic therapeutics and preventive methods and is able to provide basic practical treatments. On the completion of an anamnesis and a complex oral examination, the graduate is able to analyse the origin of diseases, apply methods of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, and to treat dental diseases. Students prepare for, and take, obligatory state exams throughout the 6th year. For a brief overview please see the curriculum. The degree is recognized by the British Dental Association.
