I’m pleased to share that the School of Botanical Art & Illustration here at Denver Botanic Gardens now
offers multiple avenues for artists of all skill levels to pursue their passion. For an initial goal, a foundational
certificate offers instruction in skills and media essential to a solid footing in the discipline. For those seeking
additional challenge and reward, a Certificate in Botanical Illustration offers subsequent aspiration. Enjoy
the varied offerings the School of Botanical Art & Illustration has to offer this season.

The world-renowned School of Botanical Art and Illustration is located at Denver Botanic Gardens, providing students and
scholars with the opportunity to hone their skills in this specialized genre. Much has been said about the modern need to fuse
art and science in order to expand economic development and enlightenment, but few programs are as direct in their impact
as botanical illustration. The School of Botanical Art and Illustration focuses not only on technique but also on the plants
themselves, with courses in botany and microscopy and lectures from visiting artists. From small, highly interactive classes to realworld opportunities for exhibition, sales and publication, the Gardens has every tool needed to instruct and inspire flourishing
botanical artists.
Botanical art and illustration is the well-established tradition of portraying plants for scientific purposes, recording vanishing
species for historical record or rendering the beauty and inspiration we experience in the flora around us.
Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration’s curriculum consists of a comprehensive series of classes
in botanical illustration, providing the drawing and illustration skills required to render accurate and useful depictions of the
plant world with a focus on detail. This program is for the dedicated illustrator as well as the devoted amateur. It culminates in
a foundational certificate or advanced diploma in botanical illustration for some students, and offers an ongoing program of
botanical classes for others.
FOUNDATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN
BOTANICAL ART & ILLUSTRATION
Introductory Course
Students wishing to learn more about botanical illustration or to
brush up on their skills before beginning the certificate sequence
can take Introduction to Botanical Illustration, which is not part of
the certificate requirements.
Required Courses
The following 15 courses are required if you wish to receive a
Foundational Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration. Classes
should be taken in the order determined by their prerequisites.*
Courses consist of exercises, critiques, demonstrations and
homework assignments. A list of supplies for each course will be
sent with class confirmation. Please note: To receive credit for any
course, attendance is required at the first class and at 80 percent

*Students are responsible for taking note of prerequisites and
determining if they are eligible for a course. Class sizes are
limited, and seats are meant for those filling course requirements.
Elective courses
Elective courses serve a variety of purposes. They are designed
to increase the student’s knowledge, ability and experience in
botanical art and should be integrated with the required courses.
In addition to the 15 required courses, students must select no
fewer than 100 elective hours; it is strongly recommended that
students take relevant elective courses simultaneously with the
required curriculum. The number of elective classes offered each
year may vary. Typically, an elective course meets weekly for
three hours over a five-week time period (15 hours total), but
condensed courses are also available. Guest instructor workshops
may be taken as electives.
Science and Art Lectures
Selected lectures at Denver Botanic Gardens qualify for elective
credits. Attendance at one lecture gives one elective credit hour;
students can receive a maximum of 15 credit hours from these
lectures. Café Botanique is a lecture series open to School of
Botanical Art and Illustration students, Gardens members, the
general public, academia and artists. Pre-registration is required
for credit.

John Pastoriza-Piñol
John Pastoriza-Piñol’s artistic practice operates somewhere between the centuries-old tradition of botanical illustration and contemporary art.
He goes beyond the purely representational while remaining true to the fundamental principle of objective observation of the natural world,
creating tension between the beauty of the specimen and the symbolism with which it is infused. John studied botany at both Monash and
Melbourne Universities, and completed a doctorate course at the Universidade de Vigo, in northwest Spain. Also, he studied illustration under
Jenny Phillips. Among the numerous public and private collections around the world where John’s work is held are the Hunt Institute, Pittsburgh,
PA; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne; RMIT University and the collection of Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton.
John has been teaching intermediate and advanced classes at the Geelong Botanic Gardens since 2005 and has expanded his teaching circuit
to include interstate and international master classes that share his unique approach to the art form.

Instructor: Laurence Pierson
Laurence Pierson has over 20 years of experience in icon
painting. She studied iconography at the Louvre, Paris, under a
Lebanese master. Later, she studied with a Greek and a Chilean
iconographer, and thus was exposed to different schools and
different techniques while refining her own approach. Laurence
has taught in France and Ireland, and since 2010, in Denver.
Documenting and Collecting Across Cultures
From the Paleolithic to Leonardo da Vinci, and from the great
Temple of Thutmose to the modern galleries and studios of London
or New York, images have been carved or engraved in bones,
stone or wood. Later, they were painted on walls, papyrus, velum
or paper. As soon as books and manuscripts about plants began
to be produced, illustrations became desirable and essential.
During this workshop, you will learn about the long history of
botanical illustration and its importance within medicine, botany
and other scientific fields. Fee: $240 member, $290 nonmember. No prerequisites.

Color Palettes That
Inspire the World
Look at those colors!
Who
painted
that
masterpiece? Artists are
often recognized by the
color palette they use
in their paintings—van
Gogh’s bold blue-violets,
greens and yellows;
Claude Monet
Matisse’s crisp primaries
and secondaries; Picasso’s moody blues. Although the world is
awash in color, painters usually limit their selection of pigments for
a particular painting. In this class, discover why and how color is
at the core of successful paintings. Glean a color scheme from a
favorite piece of art, and learn how to develop your own threedimensional color “tree” based, in part, on the Munsell Color
System. Then use this chart to choose botanical subjects for your
final watercolor piece. Demonstrations and exercises teach you
how to construct a strong composition and use a limited palette to
create a harmonious painting infused with artistic expression. Fee:
$240 member, $290 non-member. Prerequisites: Composition

Secret Belgian Binding
The origin of Secret Belgian
binding is debatable. It could be
a contemporary structure from
Canada, the United States, Italy
or the Netherlands. Or it could
have originated in a Belgian
monastery sometime between
the 14th and 16th centuries. This
workshop will explore the Secret
Belgian structure and ways to
Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski
modify it. You will put together
two variations of this non-adhesive structure, which is simple and
can be quickly constructed. This binding opens flat and is perfect
for thinner text blocks. Fee: $150 member, $200 non-member.
No prerequisites.

art, since the personal computer
and text messaging have become the primary methods for recording
our ideas. Researchers suggest that developing writing skills will aid
the visual identification of graphic shapes. During this workshop you
will learn how to develop and improve your handwriting skills while
exploring simple methods to improve your signature and labeling.
With practice, you will be able to make neater writing a habit.
This workshop gives you the confidence to sign and label your next

Carbon Dust I
The white vine design was
the decoration of choice in
many books of hours created
during the 11th, 12th and
15th centuries in Florence,
Italy. In this decoration, an
initial is intertwined with
a creeping vine in white,
contrasted against a highly

colored background. The
entire design is then supported within a border and the striking
background, which gives the illumination the look of stained glass.
During this class you’ll explore different patterns and designs and
