Recommendation
It is recommended that the Governing Board accept an award for a FIPSE grant from the
U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) in the amount of $300,000 to Maricopa County
Community College District (MCCCD) on behalf of Rio Salado College which will serve as
the host college and operate the East Valley Veterans Education Center (EVVEC). This
project will commence 09/01/2010 on and conclude on 08/31/2011.
Justification
MCCCD will use this USDOE Grant of $300,000, which includes funding for equipment,
technology and staffing, for its East Valley Veterans Education Center (EVVEC) to enable
Veterans to enroll in and complete postsecondary education. The planned activities for the grant
focus on academic and career advisement; workforce development and employment-related
workshops; and additional educational support for Veterans and their family members. The
EVVEC which will be operated by Rio Salado College is a collaborative project including
Maricopa sister colleges SCC, GWCC, MCC, and CGCC in a one-stop location, where Veterans
and their family members will be able to obtain information beneficial to reintegration and
educational success.
Expected outcomes are to:
1.
Increase Veterans’ and their family member’s access to higher education through inperson and online college programs and comprehensive student support services.
2.
Assist Veterans and their family members to utilize Montgomery and Post-9-11 GI Bill
education benefits.
3.
Expand existing collaborative partnerships with Veteran support groups that will work
with MCCCD’s EVVEC to identify additional Veterans and dependent needs.
4.
Hold workshops to introduce prospective students to the EVVEC for personalized
student assessment, academic and financial aid advisement, as well as disability, career
and library services; and familiarize students with other Veteran resources.
5.
Develop and host both an in-person and an online college orientation to introduce
Veterans and their family members to MCCCD and the East Valley Colleges.
