Experimental Courses: Spring 2016 AHS 470. Neuroanatomy & Spiritual Formation. Examination of the material and functional anatomy of the brain and its relationship to behaviors, emotions, memories, language, decisions, and interactions with others. Concurrently, an exploration of Christian theology and practices of spiritual formation, such as Scripture reading, meditation, worship, prayer, service and relationships, and their correlation to physical functions of the brain. Current empirical, theological, and psychological research will be used. ANTH 440. Anthropological Writing: Writing in History and the Social Sciences. This is a course for students who want to write for scholarly and general audiences. It is an opportunity to strengthen your writing skills and your analytical techniques and the final goal is to get a piece of writing ready for submission to either a scholarly journal or a popular writing venue. In this intensive writing course, advanced anthropology (and related disciplines) students will get a handson experience of gathering original data (ethnographic, archival, statistical, geo-spatial, etc.), transforming it into evidence (by analyzing it using relevant theoretical methods) and then writing a compelling analytical argument that connects the research findings to important social scientific questions. (2 cr.) ANTH 470. City in Popular Culture. Explores common representations for the city as they emerge within the media of popular culture. These characterizations of the city are critically considered within frameworks of anthropological analysis and there highlight issues of meaning, practice, history, and human agency. (2 cr.) ART 460. Gallery as Meeting Ground. BITH 590. German Reading/Translation Workshop. BITH 590 is an intensive follow-up to BITH 505: German for Reading (cross-listed as GERM 372). This is weekly workshop that extends the clinic approach meeting for the entire semester. The workshop will focus on textual analysis and close translation, management of linguistic challenges, and development of global reading skills (e.g., scanning). (0 cr) GERM 390. German for Reading/Translation Workshop. See BITH 590. MUMS 330. Acoustic Recording Techniques. Practical exploration of acoustic music recording techniques in Shea Recording Studio, including classical and pop/rock recording methods. Emphasis will be placed on making appropriate engineering and production choices for musical contexts, to include microphone selection and placement, organization of studio recording sessions, and the use of ProTools software. Pre-requisite: Permission of Instructor. Conservatory fee $330. (3 cr.) PSCI 340. Neo-Calvinism. This course will introduce students to one of the major stream of Christian political theology, the neo-Calvinist tradition that emerged out of late 19th century Netherlands. We will focus especially on the work and legacy of Abraham Kuyper, whose writing, speeches, and political activities game this tradition its impetus and deeply shaped its subsequent development. We will critically examine neo-Calvinism not just because it is an important tradition in itself but also so that students might consider its relevance for their own views about politics and its relation to the Christian faith. (4 cr.) PSYC 470. HIV in Global Cities: Applied Theories and Practice of Community Psychology. The disproportionate burden of HIV/AIDS in global cities have created an urgent opportunity for the application of community psychology to help understand the complex interplay of social and individual-level drivers that influence HIV prevention and care for persons living with HIV. Specific theories of participatory-action research, multi-level community inventions (with an emphasis on faith-based interventions), structural HIV stigma, and group networking will be presented and discussed. (2 cr.) PSYC 850. Collaborative Psychological Practice in Primary Care. An advanced three credit clinical course introducing students to the role of the mental health professional in the primary healthcare context. Diagnostic, intervention, and interdisciplinary consultation skills necessary for effective practice in fast-paced, high-volume interdisciplinary healthcare settings are emphasized with a focus on under-served communities and populations. Open to graduate students in MA and Psy.D programs. Pre-requisites: Students should have completed a course in psychopathology and the core intervention courses required by their programs. (3 cr.) SOC 460. Violence in Minority Communities. Night after night in most urban areas, local news media reveal stories of horrific violence in urban areas. Some of these events are related to gang activities, drug trafficking, turf wars, guns, and random shootings. Costs (human and financial) are staggering for authorities in law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and the nation. Why do these social conditions exist or persist? What can be done about them, from a Christian perspective? Where are churches relevant? These issues and questions will be addressed in this course from a variety of domains intersecting the sociological perspective and public health. (2 cr.) SOC 480. Violence against Women. All over the world, violence is used to control or harm women and girls. In Criminology, issues related to domestic abuse, rape, sex trafficking, abduction, and sexual homicide are core to the social problems engulfing societies. In Sociology, violence against women involves the corruption and distortion of gender roles via socialization, discrimination, and power. This course analyzes the most rigorous research plus best practices in in sociology and criminology (as well as related fields) in order to prevent violence against women in church and society. Also, self-defense tactics will be explored with experts in law enforcement and associated professions. Our immediate or urgent aim is to expose the silent treachery and inconspicuous damage that violence against women produces in persons, churches, and nations. (2 cr.) SOC 490. Advanced Gender Studies Seminar. In this advanced seminar, students will engage with the current debates in the field of gender studies and identify key issues, taking a global perspective. We will critically examine what a Christian perspective brings to the discussion. Students will write a research paper, based in their major discipline but engaging interdisciplinary boundaries that addresses issues of gender inequality and/or gendered perspectives. Finally, students will apply material from this and previous course to design and implement a project that addresses issues of gender justice, either at a domestic or global level. Pre-req: SOC 347 and BITH 383, or permission of the instructor (4 cr) SPAN 370. Hispanics in the U.S. The course serves as an introduction to the variety of cultures, histories and identities that the term Latino encompasses. It examines what has been the experience of the different Latino sub-groups in the United States (Mexican, Caribbean, and Central and South American). Topics discussed in the course include the Latino Diaspora, cultural definition and identity, the U.S./Mexican border, assimilation and resistance, Latino stereotyping, language, and spirituality.
