UL Certified High Voltage Equipment for Use in Electrical

September 2009
For regulatory authorities in the electrical inspection community.
UL Certified High Voltage
Equipment for Use in
Electrical Systems
Q: Does UL certify equipment for use in
electrical systems rated over 600 V?
A: Yes. UL has certification programs (Listing
and Classification) for many types of electrical
equipment for use in systems rated for high
voltage applications, including:
• Wire connectors
• Overcurrent protective devices
• Switchgear
• Transformers
• Surge protective devices
• Busways
• Wiring methods
• Control equipment
The National Electrical Code (NEC) contains
numerous requirements that are applicable
to high voltage systems and equipment rated
over 600 V, such as Article 100 Part II and
®
Article 110 Parts III & IV. In addition to the
numerous sections of the NEC that refer
to installations of equipment rated over 600 V,
Article 490 is specifically dedicated to
Equipment Over 600 Volts Nominal. For the
Canadian Electrical Code ® (CEC), high voltage
is defined to be any voltage exceeding 750 V.
The UL White Book should be consulted for
valuable information regarding installation of
equipment intended for high voltage applications. In the 2009 UL White Book, you will
find a comprehensive list of equipment and
devices rated over 600 V on page 31. For your
convenience, see the table on the following
page for a list of UL product categories for
equipment rated over 600 V.
