MA Defence Procedures – For Students Î
4 - 6 MONTHS BEFORE INTENDED DEFENCE DATE
‰
Provide your Senior Supervisor with a draft of your thesis. Ensure your supervisor and committee
members have adequate time to review drafts and provide comments before scheduling your defence.
‰
Register in PSYC 898 (MA Thesis) in the term in which you will be defending.
6+ WEEKS PRIOR TO DEFENCE
‰
Defence Date and Time – Let your Senior Supervisor know your availability and they will make all
arrangements for your defence, including selecting an external examiner and coordinating the Committee
members. Anita will arrange for the defence chair and room. NOTE: All external examiner arrangements
are made by your supervisor – it is important that you not have any contact with them.
‰
Complete the Student Checklist and submit to Anita.
Apply to PhD Program – Advise Anita in advance to allow access to online system.
Complete Online Application (fee waived for current SFU students)
- Sign on to https://go.sfu.ca and follow the instructions for Existing Users
- Add SFU in the Education section so you can upload your SFU advising transcript
- GRE scores are not required (already on file)
- Provide two referees (one from your Senior Supervisor) - enter Anita Turner for third reference
- Upload CV, SFU AdvisingTranscript, Statement of Intent
- Do not register in PhD program until receipt of acceptance letter from DGS

PREPARING FOR YOUR DEFENCE:
‰
Library Requirements –This is a good time to review the Library submission requirements (can schedule
a pre-submission review with the Library if desired).
‰
Practice Session – It is strongly recommended that you book a practice session in the defence room to
ensure all computer and tele/video-conference (if necessary) connections are working properly. Please
verify you have all required equipment in your defence room (e.g. computer, Skype, etc.).
2+ WEEKS PRIOR TO DEFENCE
‰
Thesis distribution - You must distribute your thesis to all Examining Committee members (including
External Examiner & Defence Chair) a minimum of two weeks in advance of the defense date. Please
verify with Committee members if they would like an electronic or hard copy (or both).

Revisions - Your Supervisor will inform Anita that all required revisions have been completed to their
satisfaction prior to Library submission.
‰
Meet with Anita to obtain documentation for Library submission (you will be provided with the
Examination Results, Supervisor Revision Memo, 6 signed approval pages, ethics approvals, Partial
Copyright Licence, Non-Exclusive Licence).
‰
Library Submission Requirements - http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/writing/theses. You must submit to the
Library within three weeks of completing your thesis revisions. An intake appointment can be scheduled
with the Library after submission.
‰
Register your thesis online (https://theses.lib.sfu.ca/) at least 2 days prior to Library submission
‰
Thesis Binding – Please see Margaret Elsey to make arrangements for thesis binding. We require one
Department copy (pd by Dept.) and can bind as many additional copies as you like ($32/ea) through the
SFSS Copy Centre (MBC 2260). You can use any balance remaining in your MA Fund for binding.
