Merit Badge Class Schedule Summer 2016 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Participants are expected to show respect to the Instructor and other members of the class, participate without being disruptive, and obey rules or a parent will need to attend the class with them. A scout must have all of his paperwork and projects completed in order to complete the badge. The cost of registration is for instruction and not for a signature on the card and scouts must have completed all requirements in order to receive a signature of completion. DO NOT lose or throw away any work! Instructors are only required to keep a record of completion for one year so these workbooks become your proof of completion if you lose your blue card. Scouts must check in at the front desk and receive a pass before they will be admitted to class. If your scout is unable to attend a class that he has registered for, you must contact the Fitness Center BEFORE the class is held. Once the first class has started, there will not be a transfer or credit given. There are no makeup classes. All classes are subject to change. We will notify you by email of any changes that are made if you have already registered for a class and it is changed. It is your responsibility to make sure we have a current email so we can notify you. If a class is CANCELLED your money will remain as a credit for a future class. If a class is RESCHEDULED, you will automatically be transferred to the new class and notified of the new dates and time by email. If a class is FULL, please contact the Fitness Center to have your son’s name put on a waiting list. Please do not ask to be an exception to be included in a class as we cannot make exceptions to the class sizes. There are NO MAKE-UP dates for missed classes. Archery Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 4-6pm Cost: $26 - $29 Counselor: Brent Scouts will learn to successfully use a compound bow, make a bow string and an arrow from a bare shaft, and learn rules for archery safety and safe handling of a bow and arrows. Scouts must be able to pull back a 12 lb. draw weight bow and be willing to follow all instructions. Supplies provided. There will be other homework assigned and information that Scouts will be required to find out about their community. Scouts should have visited a dentist for a routine checkup before taking this class and be prepared to discuss his experience. Scouts need to watch three videos at www.nsteens.org/videos BEFORE coming to class. They will earn the Cyber Chip while working on this badge. (The Programming Merit Badge is very similar.) Scouts will need to complete seven rides (two 10-mile, two 15-mile, two 25-mile, and one 50-mile.) Once they have completed these rides, contact us and we can arrange a time for you to meet with a counselor to complete the rest of the requirements for this badge. **Possible Required for Eagle Disabilities Awareness Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 5-6pm Cost: $9-$13 Counselor: Mati This class will teach scouts to have an appreciation for those with disabilities. Scouts will visit a place that works with people that have disabilities and observe 2 different locations about the accessibility for people with disabilities. Electronics Dates: Jun 23rd & Jun 30th Time: 7-9pm & 7-8:30pm Cost: $21-$25 Counselor: Wes Scouts will learn the basic theories and fundamentals of electronics, how to work with electronic components safely, the function of basic components, how to solder and how to draw a schematic. A working electronic device will need to be assembled to complete the merit badge. Dog Care Dates: July 6th Time: 2-3pm Cost: $7 - $10 Counselor: Bill Scouts will learn about dogs and they need to show how to take care and train a dog. They must have a dog or have taken care of a dog for two months. Requirements #4, #5, #8, & #9 must be completed before coming to class. Scouts are required to take part in an Emergency project or drill and a troop mobilization exercise. They will conduct a home safety survey, conduct a family fire drill, and draw a fire escape plan for their home. The second class will be at the AF Fire Station. In class, scouts will play Indian games, make an item used by a tribe, and make a model of a dwelling, as well as complete all of the other requirements for this merit badge. Scouts will need to make two models, not from a kit, as part of their homework. Scouts need to bring a mechanical pencil with lead, eraser, drafting tools (a ruler, triangle, drafting compass, and protractor), scaled paper, and a signed blue card to class. Nature Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 9-10am Cost: $9-$13 Counselor: Brett Scouts will identify birds, mammals, spiders, plants, soils, and rocks. Some will need to be in a collection. They are required to bring a copy of their scout physical to the first class and a note from the Dentist stating that they have been seen in the last 6 months. Check online at www.meritbadge.org). Scouts will learn the importance of education. Scouts will learn about the history of Boy Scouting and the founders. They will need to visit a scouting exhibit or museum, interview former scouters and make a collection of scouting memorabilia. Search and Rescue Signs, Signals, Codes Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 4-6pm Cost: $16- $20 Counselor: Michael Dates: July 23rd Time: 10am-1pm Cost: $16 - $20 Counselor: Dana Scouts will learn more about search and rescue techniques. Become familiar with the Incident command system before coming to the first class. The second class will be at Highland Glen Park where they will do a search and rescue exercise. Space Exploration Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 7-9pm & 10-11am Cost: $30 - $35 Counselor: Dana Scouts will learn about space, why we explore it, and how it benefits mankind. Scouts will build and launch a rocket. The rocket launch will be during the last class and family and friends are welcome to come and watch. (Includes $10 Supply Fee - all supplies included.) Scouts will learn about different ways to communicate, including signaling, Morse Code, ASL, semaphore, braille, sound and hand signals. BEFORE CLASS scouts will need to lay out a one-mile trail for their troop with six signs or markings. Scouts will learn about the protected and unprotected reptiles and amphibians. THEY WILL NEED TO TAKE CARE OF A REPTILE OR AMPHIBIAN FOR AT LEAST A MONTH AND CHART THE CARE TAKEN. Salesmanship Counselor: Yvonne Scouts will prepare and present a sales presentation, interview a salesperson or a store owner, and write a report on a career in sales. Once all requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center and arrange a time to meet with the counselor. Sculpture We are currently looking for a counselor for this badge. Soil & Water Conservation (one-time class) Dates: July 13th Time: 4-7pm Cost: $12 - $16 Counselor: Mati This class will demonstrate how soil and water shape our world. There are prerequisites to be completed before class so make sure to check registration notes. Sports Stamp Collecting Counselor: Wendy Counselor: Dana Scouts are required to participate in TWO DIFFERENT sports and record their training. We will not be offering this as a class, but you can go online to www.meritbadge.org and print off the workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Scouts need to learn about stamp collecting and then prepare a stamp collection for display. When you complete all of the requirements, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the instructor. Sustainability Date: Jun 30th & Jul 21st Time: 6-7pm Cost: $9 - $13 Counselor: Mati Scouts will learn about sustainability in five different areas and complete two tasks for each area. Scouts will need to construct a shelter and spend the night in it as homework, providing pictures and presenting an oral report on their experience. Scouts will learn about different types of wood and when each is appropriate for a project, identify different tools used, and how to properly sharpen and care for those tools. They should bring a piece of soft wood and a sharp pocketknife to class. SCOUTS MUST EARN THE TOTIN' CHIP RECOGNITION BEFORE STARTING THE CLASS. ($8 supply fee included.) Textiles (one-time class) Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 4-7pm Cost: $15 - $19 Counselor: Stephanie Scouts need to get swatches of two natural-fiber fabrics, two synthetic-fiber fabrics, and one cellulosic fabric and research the origin, major characteristics, and general content of each type of fiber obtained. It will be helpful if the scout writes these things down as they will give a small report in class on a few of the fabrics. ($3 Supply Fee.) Weather Dates: Fall 2016 Time: 9-10am Cost: $9 - $13 Counselor: Brett Scouts will demonstrate their knowledge of various weather conditions, cloud formations, outdoor safety rules in different weather situations, and diagram the water cycle.
