Professor Anthony Chen Professor Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Anthony Chen joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in April 2016. Prior to joining PolyU, he was Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Head of the Transportation Division at Utah State University, USA, at which he had worked for seventeen years. Professor Chen received his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering specializing in Transportation Systems Engineering from the University of California at Irvine, USA. After obtaining his PhD, he spent a year as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Professor Chen received the prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Grant from the National Science Foundation of the United States in 2002. As of 2015, only six Chinese academics have received this prestigious award in Transportation. Currently, Professor Chen also serves as Chang Jiang Chair Professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. Apart from teaching in China and the United States, Professor Chen also taught in Korea and Thailand during his two sabbaticals in 2006 and 2013. Many of his PhD graduates, visiting PhD graduates and post-doctoral fellows are now faculty members at different universities in Asia, including Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beijing Jiaotong University in China, Asian Institute of Technology, Chiang Mai University, Kasetsart University, King Mongkot’s University of Technology, National Institute of Development Administration, and Bhurapa University in Thailand. The major portion of Professor Chen’s research focuses on transportation systems modeling and analysis, transportation network reliability/vulnerability/flexibility/redundancy/resiliency analysis, non-motorized transportation modeling, path flow estimator and its applications to transportation planning, and applied optimization to civil infrastructure problems. Professor Chen was a member of the Transportation Network Modeling Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the United States from 1999 to 2009, and an editorial board member of the ASCE Journal of Urban Planning and Development from 2007 to 2014. He is currently an Associate Editor of Transportmetrica A: Transport Science, Networks and Spatial Economics, and the Journal of Advanced Transportation, and an editorial advisory board member of Transportation Research Part B: Methodological.
