“FIRST ANNUAL “SHERIFF’S SHOOT” Sponsored by the BUTLER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE Sheriff Richard K Jones On October 10th and 11th, 2008 we will be hosting the first annual sheriff’s shoot at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Training Facility located at 2067 Woodsdale Rd., in Trenton Ohio. Lunch will be provided each day from 1100 to 1400 hrs. and is included with the entry fee. The match will be for strictly “Duty Pistols” only. The pistol can be either a revolver (six shot) or a semi automatic pistol suitable for carry in uniform on the street. The only modifications permitted will be the addition of an adjustable sight suitable for duty use, and those limitations listed below: Specifically prohibited are full‐length Bo‐Mar type ribs on the slide, trigger shoes, extended slide release, extended magazine well funnel and any system of recoil control based on compensators, barrel venting, barrel porting, or weighted grips, grip panels. No internal modifications may be made that would render the pistol less safe than originally designed by the manufacturer. Grips / Stocks: The pistol must be equipped with standard issue or commercially procured grips/stocks of the same size and design. Thumb rest grips/stocks or those flared at the base are not allowed, nor is tape on the grips/stocks or any substance which results in a sticky surface to the grips/stocks or hand. Finger groove and slip on grips are allowed. Ammunition: Reloaded or factory lead, ball, jacketed soft point, or hollow point ammunition is allowed. Ammunition must be loaded to equal the energy of factory service ammunition. In case of a question regarding ammunition, a sample provided by the shooter must reliably operate a pistol of the same caliber in factory original condition. Each competitor will be required to wear a duty style belt with duty style holster and magazine pouch. The holster must have a retaining strap or system that is activated by a finger or thumb to permit the draw. The magazine pouches must have a top strap or retainer which is released by use of a finger or thumb. Each competitor will pay an entry fee of $20.00 (includes lunch), which allows the shooter to shoot the match twice. The better of the two scores will be kept for record. The match will consist of 48 rounds of ammunition fired on a standard B27 target. The BCSO Range Master’s decision on firearms is final. In determining whether a specific firearm meets the spirit and intent as well as the letter of this Rule, it should be remembered that this is meant to be a totally stock police duty firearm such as would be issued to a police recruit in the academy. THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION FIREARM MATCH.
The purpose of this event is to encourage police officers to participate in competitive shooting using their standard issue firearm without having to incur the cost of additional and specialized firearms. Officers have the choice to compete using a revolver or semi‐automatic pistol. If you compete with a revolver, it must be a six shot. Please note that competitors MUST continue with the type of firearm they will start the competition with (revolver or semi‐automatic pistol). There is not a separate class for the type of pistol used. All are classed together. Course of Fire: This course of fire is designed specifically for the purpose of encouraging police
officers to participate in competitive shooting without incurring the cost of additional or specialized
firearms. This course is designed to be fired using standard-issue police duty firearms.
Stage 1: 3 yards – 12 shots total - from standing without support position from a secured holster position,
draw, fire 6 shots strong hand one handed, reload and fire 6 shots weak hand one handed (20 seconds,
includes reloading for the second 6 shot string).
Stage 2: 7 yards – 12 shots total, one or two hands, strong hand or weak hand from a standing without support
position from a secured holster position: draw, fire 6 shots, reload, then fire 6 shots again in 20 seconds
(includes reloading for the second 6 shot string).
Stage 3: 15 yards – 12 shots total, repeat stage 2 in 25 seconds.
Stage 4: 25 yards – 12 shots total, one or two hands; draw and fire 6 shots standing left hand from behind the
barricade; reload, and fire 6 shots standing right hand from behind the barricade in 60 seconds (includes
reloading for the second 6 shot string).
The barricade MUST be used for cover and can be used for support.
First Place winners in each of four classes will be awarded a certificate for a pistol or shotgun. Second and
Third place winners will be given other police related products. The first three places in each class will be given
a trophy or plaque. The Lewis scoring system will be used to separate the A, B, C, and D classes. If the split
is uneven then the D class may be short in number.
Speed and accuracy will be needed successfully compete for the first prize in each class consisting of a pistol or shotgun.
“BONUS COURSE”: a 50/50 Shoot Competitors may also choose to participate in a “BONUS SHOOT” which will consist of a Steel Plate Shoot. The competitor will start from a high ready position and shoot at a standard steel six plate rack located 30’ from the shooter. The fastest time (using a PAC timer) of the two attempts on the plates entitles the shooter to “split the pot”. The split will be given at the end of each day. Each shooter may shoot as many times as they wish for a fee of $5.00 per two attempts. RANGE SAFETY RULES GENERAL 1. The range will be operated under COLD RANGE CONDITIONS. 2. Weapons will be loaded only on line immediately prior to a shooting relay start 3. When on the range, all weapons will remain holstered except on command 4. Never load or unload any weapon unless in a designated area and commanded to do so. 5. No use of drugs or alcohol prior to or while on the range. 6. While on the line, If you have a question, do not turn around, raise your hand and a range officer will respond 7. If you do not understand a range command, follow the procedure outlined in rule 6. 8. In the case of a “squib load”, keep the weapon pointed downrange and raise your other hand to summon a range officer. 9. Never leave the firing line or proceed forward to the target area without a command from the range officer running the relay. 10. Should it become necessary for anyone to proceed from the firing line to the targets, all pistols will be holstered and the line “cleared” by a Range Officer prior to any movement. 11. Never lay a firearm down without unloading it, and the action locked open. 12. The strictest discipline MUST be maintained at all times on the firing line in order to prevent accidents and injuries. Carelessness, thoughtlessness, and horseplay of any type cannot and will not be tolerated at any time. 13. Participants are subject to Match Disqualification for violation of any rule above. 14. A “Negligent Discharge” is a basis for Match Disqualification. It is defined as a discharge of a firearm in an unsafe manner or unintentionally in which a projectile (bullet) strikes the ground within 3 yards of the competitor or Range Officer, or outside the confines of the backstop. 15. A participant shall be disqualified from the match for dropping a firearm, loaded or unloaded, or dropping a firearm in the loading/unloading process. 16. A participant will be disqualified for allowing the muzzle of his/her firearm to break the 180‐degree Safety Plane (except while holstered, drawing or re‐holstering). 17. All disqualifications and reshoots will be issued by the Range Master. Sportsmanship & Conduct 18. Participants and spectators will conduct themselves in a courteous, sportsman‐like manner at all times. Disputes will be handled promptly and fairly by the Range Master. 19. Clothing with any offensive or obscene logos, sayings, pictures or drawings will not be worn or displayed while at the Match site/range. Arbitration Rules & General Principles 20. Occasional disputes are inevitable in any competitive activity governed by rules. It is recognized that at the more significant levels of competition, where the first place prize is substantial, emotions run high and the outcome is much more important to the individual competitor. Our hopes are that we can work together with everyone involved and prevent most, if not all, disputes. 21. Protests may be submitted to the Range Master and a request made for arbitration of the issue by the Match Senior Range Staff. However, protests arising from a disqualification for a safety infraction will only be accepted to determine whether or not an infraction as described by any Range Officer was in fact unsafe. The commission of the infraction may not be protested. 22. Protests are permitted by the participant to dispute a target score. These initial protests are checked by the Range Officer, who just ran that relay. If a dispute still exists, then the Range master will be summoned to settle the scoring dispute. His decision is final. 23. Decisions are made initially by the Range Officer. If the participant disagrees with the decision, the Range Master shall be summoned to rule on the protest.
