Introduction
Using this architect/contractor package
This package provides architects and contractors with information necessary to prepare the site for the
installation of the 3M Intelligent Return Plus and Sorter System FX. The information provided here must be
followed to ensure optimal performance.
Before beginning new construction or changing an existing structure, contact 3M Library Systems Technical
Service at 1-800-328-0067 (website: http://www.3M.com/library) or your sales representative to:
•
Confirm that you have the most recent version of this document.
•
Verify that the proposed system can be installed in the planned space.
Caution: Use the correct architect/contractor package
There are four architect/contractor packages that cover the Intelligent Return and SL and FX Sorter system
models. They carry similar, but not identical information. Consequently, it is very important that you use the
package intended for the equipment you plan to have installed at your library. Use the information in the
following table to ensure that you are using the correct one.

Facility requirements
Electrical requirements
Intelligent Return units
All Intelligent Return units require noise-free and reliable power that conforms to the specifications below:
•
A single AC power outlet located in the same room as the staff side (not the outside or side accessible to the
public) of the Intelligent Return and within 6 feet [1.82 m] of the Intelligent Return.
•
Service that conforms to the following specifications:
 100–120 VAC, 1–phase, 60 Hz, 2.5 amps
 200–240 VAC, 1–phase, 50Hz, 1.5 amps
 15–20 amp line (North America) or a 10–16 amp line (all other locations)
FX System Controller Model 2855
The FX System Controller Model 2855 requires a single AC power outlet within 6 feet [1.82 m] of the unit and
service that conforms to the following specifications:
•

•
200–240 VAC, 1–phase, 50Hz, 3.8 amps
•
A 15–20 amp line (North America) or a 10–16 amp line (all other locations)
Note:
Systems installed prior to January 1, 2012 continue to have an additional requirement. The Model 2855
requires a dedicated, isolated ground circuit. This
must have an insulated grounding wire (color coded
green with yellow stripe) run directly from the
building main service entrance panel or circuit panel
to an isolated ground receptacle (orange) in which
the grounding terminal is purposely insulated from
the mounting box (NEMA 5–15 isolated ground).
This circuit is defined in Section 250–74 No. 4 in the
National Electric Code Handbook.
This requirement does not apply to systems installed
after January 1, 2012.

Wall construction: Models 2820 and 2822
This section provides wall construction requirements for 3M Intelligent Return Plus models.
Wall opening dimensions and materials
•
The 2820/2822 system requires a wall opening 28 in. wide × 27.5 in. high [711 mm wide × 699 mm high].
•
The surround adds a 3 in. (76 mm) border around the opening.
•
The system can be installed in walls with depths that range from 4 in. to 18 in. (102 mm to 457 mm).
•
The wall opening requires framing material that will readily accept the surround anchoring screws. This
material cannot be concrete, brick, or rock of any kind. 3M recommends 2 x 6 inch treated wood framing.
•
3M requires that the
bottom of the wall
opening be 33 in. (838
mm) from the floor on
the staff side. If the staff
and patron side surfaces
are at the same
elevation, this will place
the shelf at a height of
36 in. (914 mm), which
is an ADA
recommendation. If the
elevation differs, contact
your 3M sales
representative or 3M
technical support to
discuss options.

Note:
The system requires an
opening that complies
exactly with the dimensions
listed in the figure. If you
plan to finish the opening,
the rough opening must be
large enough to
accommodate the finished
materials and still maintain these dimensions.

Wall thickness and weight bearing capacity
•
The system can be installed in walls that are between 4 in. to 18. in [102 to 457 mm] thick.
•
The wall should be strong enough to bear the weight of the 3M Intelligent Return, which means it should be
able to handle the additional 225 lb. [102 kg] when the system is placed on it.

Minimum distance to walls
3M recommends the following:
•
A minimum of 18 in. [457 mm] between the induction unit and the wall or other obstruction. When this isn't
possible, contact 3M Technical Service.
•
Sufficient space between sorters and the wall or other obstructions to allow the staff to place and move

Minimum distances between RFID systems
This section lists minimum distances required between 3M RFID systems in order to avoid RF interference. In
some situations, these distances may not be sufficient, though this can only be determined on-site. Specific
systems may have additional requirements regarding cable routing, power supplies, other sources of
interference and space for clearance for maintenance, workflow, and other considerations. See the sections that
address these issues in the applicable Site Planning Guide or Architect/Contractor’s Package

Intelligent Return Plus and Sorter System FX Architect/Contractor's Package
** Four foot [1,2 m] minimum applies to all 895 pad units and SelfCheck™ units without a cabinet. For
SelfCheck™ units enclosed in a cabinet, there are no distance restrictions.
# This restriction can be worked around by creating a single large system by running lattice to lattice cables
between “systems.” This combined system cannot exceed eight lattices.
† Measurement is from the RFID reader.
Minimum access requirements
The hallway and access doors between
the shipping area where the system is
received and the room that will house
the 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter
System must meet the specifications

•
Use a two-foot level and torpedo level on the surround sill surface to level the surround.
•
Fasten the surround securely in place by at least six #8 × 2 in. (three each side) wood screws and flat
