Nagarajan Sivaramakrishnan is the Managing Director of Mother Dairy
Fruits & Vegetables Pvt. Ltd. He has two decades of experience in the
food industry. He spent eight years at Cadbury India, as branch manager
and regional manager. He has worked in sales at Fritolay India and
Joyco India. At Philips Electronics India Ltd., he held the position of vice
president of the Human Resources Department. In 2010, he was
recruited by Mother Dairy Fruits & Vegetables Private Limited and went
back to his original passion and interest, the dairy industry. Mr.
Sivaramakrishnan completed his dairy science and technology degree at
the College of Dairy Science, Anand in 1984 and obtained his MBA at
the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
Mother Dairy was established in 1974 under the Operation Flood
Program, a nationwide development program designed to revolutionize milk production in rural
India. It is now a subsidiary company of a wholly owned company of the National Dairy
Development Board (NDDB). NDDB promoted dairy cooperative enterprises in Northern India
with the objective of providing round the year stable and competitive price to rural milk
producers through a three-tier structure of State federations, milk shed-based unions and their
member village dairy cooperative societies.
Today, Mother Dairy markets and sells dairy products under the Mother Dairy brand, including
Liquid Milk, Dahi, Ice creams, Dairy Whitener, Cheese and Butter, as well as the Dhara range of
edible oils and the Safal range of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen vegetables and fruit juices.
NDDB has a sales and distribution networks in Northern India, Eastern India, Mumbai and Port
Blair. With Rs. 52 billion (US$ 1 billion) in turnover in 2011, Mother Dairy is growing at about
28% annually. Mother Dairy collects around six million liters of milk daily from dairy cooperatives
of farmers of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Mother
Dairy Milk has a market share of 66% in the sector in Delhi where it sells 2.8 million liters of milk
daily through 10,000 retail outlets and over 1,200 exclusive booths in Delhi and NC Region.
The "Safal" initiative of the Mother Dairy, an institution promoted by the National Dairy
Development Board, is currently handling 100,000 metric tons fresh fruits and vegetables a year
with minimal post-harvesting loss. The company sells its fruits and vegetables through 350 to
375 Safal shops and 20,000 retail outlets in various parts of India as well as internationally.
Mother Dairy sources its milk and fruits and vegetables from dairy cooperatives and farmers and
growers associations. Mother Dairy provides support to farmers to organize into unions to
improve their income building capacity. Through its inclusive business model, Mother Dairy aims
to (a) ensure that milk producers and farmers regularly and continually receive market prices by
offering quality milk, milk products and other food products to consumers at competitive prices
and (b) uphold institutional structures that empower milk producers and farmers through
processes that are equitable. Mother Dairy pays almost 70% of the market price to the milk
suppliers. The payment is made through checks and the milk suppliers receive the payment
within 10 days. The surplus from the remaining amount is shared among the Mother Dairy, state
federations, district unions, and the village-level societies. For the procurement of fruit and
vegetables, the grower associations are paid a commission of 1.75 percent to meet the
expenses of running the association.
